A football related post that is not Manchester City related... I decided to use Expected Threat to measure who are the most impactful 'Super Subs' to bring on during non-winning game states: thespursstatman1.substack.com/p/are-we-abl...

Since the 2024-25 season Tottenham have spent 36.5% of Premier League minutes in a losing game state. 687 minutes more than any other team during this period.

Despite coming on in the 57th minute, Mateus Fernandes completed the joint most passes into the attacking 1/3 (5 with Marcos Senesi).

Something slightly different, but Iliman Ndiaye's performance against Man United got me looking into how we can measure the 'Unpredictability of Progressive Carries'. Link: thespursstatman1.substack.com/p/measuring-...

Measuring the Unpredictability of Progressive Carries
In the last few months I have managed to add ‘Progressive Carries’ to my work, the metric defined by Opta as ‘Ball carries that move the ball more than five metres upfield’ , as stated pretty obviousl...

Was interested to re-watch Kudus' performance from yesterday. The 2nd half felt rather forced... There were a few examples where a better placed pass or bit more patience in the attacking 1/3 could have made the difference to us getting our much needed goal (Thread).

A lot of negativity following the game, but thought van Hecke was really solid. He has now made 45 progressive passes this season, the most of any Premier League player (van Dijk ranks 2nd with 44).

Lot of possession... Our 317 completed passes in the 1st half is just 4 less than what we completed in the whole of the Everton game back in May (321).

A sad and messy way to end for Richarlison, a player who: 1. finally was managing to stay fit and consistently available for the squad. 2. offered a different type of striker profile to Marmoush / Solanke. 3. was arguably our most important player last season.

More Tonali lack of fitness comments from De Zerbi yesteday... We have been out-ran by our opponents in all 3 Premier League games this season. For context under De Zerbi at the end of last season, we out-ran our opponents in 6/7 games.

Spoke too soon... Mudryk anyone? Was an impressive ball carrier (don't know what he's like now)... Bit of a bonkers move to go for a player who hasn't played for close to 2 years, especially after De Zerbi's comments on Saturday about players with a lack of match fitness.

Only 2 games into the season, but it's already been quite evident that we are going to struggle aerially this season, so doesn't seem like the smartest move to lose your best aerial dual winner going into the last day of the transfer window.

Appears that Richarlison is on the way out, with Iliman Ndiaye coming in. He is a very impressive and versatile ball carrier, can operate on either wing. I would say Gakpo is a much more predictable ball carrier (but is very effective at getting shots away).

Rumours coming out today that Cody Gakpo is one of our leading transfer targets. Profile wise I personally think he is very similar to what we can be getting from Mathys Tel. Gakpo has very impressive number following progressive carries, but don't see the rationale behind spending £60M+ on him.

This season 43% of Vicario's passes per game have gone long, a huge increase to what we saw under Ange (19%). However, De Zerbi is not afraid to mix it up; Gerónimo Rulli was averaging 31% long, I'm hoping that this balance will suit both Vic & Kinsky.

TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 06/04/2026
Interested to see how De Zerbi will approach attacking set pieces: 65% (26) of our goals this season have come from open play situations, vs 76% avg since 2014-15. It's also the trend for the Premier League (69% open play vs 72% avg), however we are impressively under-indexing.

TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
De Zerbi persists on minimal touches, and highlights how majority of teams go man to man. Assuming that we will be building up more from the back, I was interested to know how pass accuracy and volume within the defensive 1/3 of our players compares vs the rest of the league.

TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Despite being out since January, Mohammed Kudus still remains #2 this season for passes into the penalty area... Xavi Simons didn't start any of Tudor's last 3 remaining Premier League games, but for me De Zerbi needs to get the best out of both for us to stay up.
040
TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
Impressive that if De Zerbi was the direction the club wanted to go last summer, we proceeded to hire and recruit to a complete contrast of playing style under Frank. Our 2nd highest midfield progresser is Palhinha, and does £35M Gallagher even start? Mess from the board.
040
TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 30/03/2026
Disagree with De Zerbi for obvious reasons, and I didn't think throwing another defensive minded / 'Prem Proven' coach (such as Dyche) would have been the right move either. Lack of open play goals/tactics + reliance on set pieces has been our downfall - originating from Frank's 'Defensive 1st' .

Scraping the barrel, but one of the only positives I can think of is that Mohammed Kudus should be available after the international break. Archie Gray made some really impressive switches of play to Tel, but we practically offered nothing on the right hand side.
