Hey everybody. On the 25-year anniversary, we're reprinting the much revered 9/11 edition of The Onion and sending that free to every member this month. It's been 25 long years. Look back in anger.
The front page of The Onion's September edition from September 2001 featuring the headline "U.S. Vows to Defeat Whoever It Is We're At War With."

Pull out enough federal funding threads, and the rest of the economic fabric unravels. We need to stop pretending that the private sector and public sector are separate - in fact they are totally interdependent, that's how all of this works.

Worked with @bobjherman.bsky.social on the data for this piece. Here’s the chart I think is the showstopper: Over the last 40 years, the amount of money spent on employer-sponsored insurance premiums skyrocketed by nearly 1000%, well above baseline inflation.
Image of a line chart it shows that from 1987 to 2024 the amount of money that employers and employees spent on employer sponsored health insurance premiums increased almost 1000%. This is compared to an increase of 176%, which would be the 2024 equivalent of the 1987 spending total.

Wild thought: maybe the twin strategy to kill hundreds of renewable energy projects & bumbling into an oil supply crisis is not working. We can achieve energy independence if we actually invest in infrastructure that powers itself.

Price spikes in health insurance premiums mean more people just won't buy it, because they can't afford it. That means more uninsured people. That means more bankruptcies due to medical emergencies & expensive treatment. And that means more misery.

Imprisoning/institutionalizing the poor for being poor is an old strategy: debtors prison, exploited labor in the workhouse. Most of 20th century U.S. history is about deciding to not accept so many people suffering & dying, doing something about it. And people who lead us want those prisons back.

An eruption at Mount Spurr, the closest volcano to Alaska’s population centers, is now less likely, researchers said Thursday.

Likelihood of Spurr eruption decreases, researchers say, but uncertainty remains
Researcher Matt Haney says the decrease in likelihood is due to a drop in a few indicators of volcanic unrest, namely shallow earthquakes and inflation of the volcano’s surface.

It's both sad and unsurprising that so much of America is caught up in scams. Scams, cheating & lying to people for profit is a growing sector. And so many people fall for it, genuinely believing in the scam, or trying to profit themselves. We're a country built by idealists but also by swindlers.
