Garlemald is freezing at best and deadly at worst, and Thancred is not used to having company on his reconnaissance trips but he is thankful for it now.

He leans into Urianger's side. He does not bother justifying the action with an excuse, a deflection of closeness. He will not pretend he does not find an amount of happiness of having someone he cares about here with him, in a country that wants him dead, in a outcrop cave that would see him wither in the snow and care not for it.

Fatherhood, it seems, has made him soft.

Izuna takes a bite of the meal they share. Meat and potatoes, cooked over a fire. He has drank enough hot chocolate in the last sennight to last a lifetime. He appreciates it, he does, but he feels the crowded stares of the soldiers despite the affirmations from their commander that they see him as an equal. The meat is gamey under his sharpened teeth. He feels like a predator. He doesn't want to.

"I cannot, however, control the way city residents may react to your appearance," he laments. "My men here in camp are much more understanding. They know cameraderie, and you have given them that each time you fight alongside them. I cannot say the same of the nobles."

Thancred stops drinking his coffee and sets down the heavy ceramic mug carefully into its decided ring on the table, but Urianger is quick to lift it again, sliding a small wooden coaster under its place. He earns a flick on his shoulder for his carelessness. "You're sure you want to know?" he asks around a grin. "Sometimes ignorance may be bliss, my friend."

Izuna rolls his eyes from his place on his sickbed. He takes another bite of the Archon Loaf.
