But… was I? Beneath me were leagues of ocean. Unlike in the forest, where you can hear the wildlife around you, there were creatures that could pass by in the sea and I would never know. The water concealed their movement, cloaking them from my view.

My body was my ultimate betrayer. It was forever my enemy, stopping me at every turn, and never allowing me to exist in myself with peace. I wasn't even allowed to be wounded by being forgotten.

It felt wrong in every aspect. In how it hung off me, how others saw it, how it fought back against me. The constant battle of it, to get it to do exactly as I wanted despite the illness, was a constant stream of thought in the back of my head.

I hated it, and it hated me. It had even stolen my hatred for it. In another life — another body — I could look at that hatred and determine that I was unequivocally born wrong. Not in the way I was born wrong, but in the way of one's true self hiding just beneath the flesh.

Even if I wanted to mold the flesh into a correct image of who I truly was, I couldn't. I was trapped within myself.
