Crossing guard report: I have been gifted a tiny cake! Not all of them were handed out to teachers, apparently, so I feast on leftovers. I am usually willing to cheat on veganism in such circumstances.

Crossing guard report: an egret was standing so still in someone’s yard across the street that I had to wait for it to turn its head to determine whether it was a lawn ornament or a real bird. It eventually got up on the roof, which definitively settled that.

Man, this is a pretty fucking gross move from Amazon, huh? Good on @bookshop.org for not mincing words, though:

Every April, we celebrate Independent Bookstore Day to remind us how vital indie bookstores are to our communities and society. It’s a day of joy and solidarity, and significant financial impact for these bookstores.

This year, Amazon is undercutting that with a “Book Sale” on the same day—a calculated move by a company that has already put half the bookstores in the country out of business, controls over 60% of the market and sells far more books than all indie bookstores combined. The people at Amazon responsible for the timing of their "Book Sale" should be ashamed, but they are shameless.

There are at least two children who are daily competing to be “first kid” across. One (the most committed by far) will come up to me & be like “First?” or “Second?” Today that kid ran across to reach the curb before someone else already in the crosswalk, thus technically claiming victory.

Was starting to get really worried about my bergamot tree — its mature leaves went from healthy to not-so-hot over the winter and for a while at the start of spring all its new growth was getting munched by something! Luckily it’s still in a pot, so I moved it and it’s bouncing back! #gardensky

Crossing guard report: this bit of wire has been here for well over a month now. The first time I saw it, I kicked it over to the base of a streetlight and it’s been there ever since, now worse for the wear from rain. Detritus from trees seems to get swept away periodically, but not this guy
