There are few greater and more consistent pleasures in this world than coming back home and being able to enjoy an evening of video games with my friends

I will always support a fellow GRB lover... I play the same way, just walking from bivouac to bivouac; I really wish they did more with that system, the game has all the right bones for a proper expedition-style system focusing on the physical toll of moving between combat encounters

I haven't meaningfully posted about game dev in probably a year on any of my social media accounts, which have largely laid fallow since. I'll probably just post here for the foreseeable future until I'm able to get the new game in a more presentable state for larger platforms.
"I've started working on a new game this month. The details are scarce for the time being, but the two major inspirations are my newfound interest in writing for various TTRPGs this past year, and a strange but fortuitous chance encounter I had back in July with a Revolutionary War re-enactment group. It's definitely planned to be more of a traditional game than Work, and much more compact in both development time and scope; but still very much in the line of "boring and occasionally unsettling things happen to people in lesser-represented geographic/historical settings in the continental United States"."

I've decided to put Work on hold as I've begun to feel a bit captive to it and don't feel in the right mindset to continue rn based on present circumstances (otherwise good). I have no plans to shelf it though, and I've started working on another project in the meantime to recuperate my motivation.

Update 46: 46: Progress update for September 2026 · My Work Is Not Yet Done
IntroductionHey, it's been a bit. Today marks just about a year since last I wrote; and I felt it was about time to get back to this. The short version is that this project has been on hiatus for the ...

Yeah, as someone who actually loves her translation, I got the exact same feeling from her essay as from those threads in which gamers lament about how the latest entry of some longtime series has invariably tarnished its reputation and only has value in drawing attention to the older titles…

Feather is kinda a massive scam in my experience, idk why they bothered implementing a system like this that's so half-assed in execution that pretty much everyone I've spoken to has immediately found it to be an inconvenience to be disabled

Maybe The Night They Missed the Horror Show? It loosely fits the contours of that premise, but is pretty notable for being one of the earliest forerunners of the splatterpunk stuff

Nah that was also my least favourite part of both games, I love the first like hour of the first one where it's just Sam carrying the body of his mother, but once you start investing in tech it robs the landscape of a certain kind of beauty and treachery in a lot of ways that mirrors reality...

Unfortunately I found Weapons really underwhelming, in an almost identical fashion to how I felt about Longlegs. Really solid technical work and superlative promo work in service of a remarkably uneventful plot whose horror elements feel largely superfluous. Sad…

Cigarettes are at least an eminently social and ritualised form of abuse that allows you to really inhale deep and feel the bitter char debriding the insides of your lungs, this shit is just bubblegum nicotine masturbation, the culmination of decades of hyper-individualised consumerist excess

Some random drunk girl gave me her Geek Bar on the train after I somehow managed to impossible-check convince her that cigarettes are the superlative form of nicotine abuse and I took a hit of that shit just now and I am now convinced 100% that this shit is magnitudes worse than cigarettes ever were

For hard recs, there's this podcast called New Books in Critical Theory that, apropos to its title, does a decent job of curating a stream of recent titles that are representative of trends. I don't listen to most of the episodes admittedly but it's quite nice for keeping a finger on the pulse!

A lot of those writers in the 2010s were operating in the novelty of Fisher's "bad news you already know", during a time where people were still optimistic about the potential of a global future. That seems to have utterly collapsed now into terminal pessimism, both philosophically and individually.

Spencer Yan @spncryn.bsky.social · 02/07/2025
I do think though that we've reached a point where critical theory as a philosophical project has overextended itself in the way Liz suggested, by consistently demonstrating an inability to imagine, let alone enact useful, practical ways (even just of thinking) through their stated critiques.

Byung-Chul Han is the one that immediately jumps to mind as far as individual names go. Autotheory (Preciado, Ruti, Nelson) has become really popular lately, although not really anything new theory-wise. Stiegler's work on caring has seen a resurgence as part of a larger interest in affect.
