My weird girl lit novel got a STARRED REVIEW in Publishers Weekly! 🤩 "Using aliens to explore alienation, SHE ISN'T HERSELF TONIGHT brilliantly turns abduction narratives on their heads. Piper continues to outdo herself.“ out October 27 from Saga! 🛸 www.publishersweekly.com/9781668077122
She Isn’t Herself Tonight
Hailey Piper. Saga, $18 trade paper (256p) ISBN 978-1-6680-7712-2
The latest foray into supernatural horror from Bram Stoker award winner Piper (A Game in Yellow) offers an enthralling twist on the classic alien abduction plot. At age 30, Rabbit (a reclaimed childhood nickname) is eagerly awaiting the return of the aliens, or “Guests,” as she refers to them, that first came for her at age 10 and then again at age 20. She has never felt truly understood, not by her mother, who paraded her around local churches as a child to tell the story of her first abduction—substituting the aliens for angels—nor her recent ex-boyfriend, Leo, who accused her of being “too much work.” As she reels from the breakup, she takes comfort in knowing that the “Guests,” the only ones who have ever made her feel safe and cared for, will be returning soon. Piper mines a lot of tension from Rabbit’s yearning for her abductors, making readers just as anxious for their arrival as Rabbit herself, even as, in the meantime, Rabbit’s body undergoes a mysterious, possibly extraterrestrial transformation. Using aliens to explore alienation, this brilliantly turns abduction narratives on their heads. Piper continues to outdo herself. Agent: Lane Heymont, Tobias Literary. (Oct.)

Detection software is a con. Those who believe it works are getting suckered while thinking they're righteously punishing someone who deserves it. The damn stuff says Emily Dickinson, famously deceased long before modern computing, used this generative junk. It cannot be relied on to tell on itself

THIS MOVIE DOESN'T END THE WAY WE WANT is out today! In 1994, three girls go to the movies to see an obscure film. Only one comes out. 30 years later, the survivor learns the movie isn't done with her yet. Now playing in a bookstore near you 😈📽️ www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/827994...
Hailey Piper in a red dress holding a copy of her book This Movie Doesn't End the Way We Want, cover art by Julia Lloyd, showing a fedora over a suit, but there's no one inside except the light of a projector. Out of the book juts a ticket for Blood-Curse of the Toad Man.

Controversial idea of the week: A return to multi-generational housing could save civilization. Not recommended for people whose families are monstrous, of course. It's okay to be on your own, but should all of us aspire to own a big house we (ultimately) only share with one other person?

A common, unintentional mistake non-depressed people make with depressed loved ones is trying to show them how to be more like the non-depressed. Essentially the message is: Be more like me. In other words, confirming their suspicion that they're not good enough. AND encouraging masking.

Cthulhu (R'lyeh exsurgebit ubi astra parata sunt) Liv Rainey-Smith Woodcut plus hand-tinted and gilded artist proof One of my older pieces, I avoided making Cthulhu art until I got an idea I actually liked. Very much made in the spirit of "let's mash together different animal parts into one monster"
A black ink woodcut print on cream colored paper. A simple black outline encloses a vertical rectangle. Text in a blackletter font fills the top of the scene reading in Latin, R'lyeh exsurgebit ubi astra parata sunt. This translates as "R'lyeh will rise when the stars are right. Seated below is a squid headed humanoid with bat-like wings, crab claw arms, and frog-like legs. One claw points up to stars on the left, and the other reaches down towards a city rising out of the waves. The being sits cross-legged on a black rock with waves breaking beneath it.The previously described woodcut print, except the stars are now gold, cthulhu is green with red wings, the ocean blue, and the city in browns.
