That awkward moment when you realize that the main character of your book is actually kind of based off of an unresolved ex-situationship

I've been majorly slacking, so I feel like a superhero when I do any of it at all lmao

Dark Fantasy isn't really my "go to" genre.A Crown of Black Roses really hit that sweet spot for me and I found myself immediately invested in the characters. Adrielle is such a fun (morally grey) character and Kieran is such an interesting foil, both with their own demons. #booksky #review

#booksky! You're not going to believe this, but I actually filmed, edited, AND posted a #booktube video for the first time in months! You can watch me fumble through relearning how to make a video here: youtu.be/sAl4SJPQl80?...

Just a guy holding some books and looking a little too pleased with himself about doing the bare minimum.

I finally had the chance to attend Late Night Lit (Silent Book Club) at Ever After Booksellers! That being said, thank you to the owners and to everyone who made last night possible! This city is made so much richer and more pleasant by your mere existence. #bookshop #booksky #dungeoncrawlercarl

Me: "I don't really like reading romances or books about musicians all that much 🤷" Also me: *Gets obsessed with writing a very gay romantic drama and makes one of the main characters a musician* Seems rational #writersky #authorsky #booksky

We have to hold onto those success stories and find those glimmers of happiness and hope where we can ❤️

It's amazing how much writing reveals the inner workings of our own brains to us! And yeah, I heavily cringe at the idea of anyone I know reading my work 😅. Yours sounds like fun though lol.

Spines And Spoilers @spinesandspoilers.bsky.social · 01/04/2026

I'm so happy for you that you were able to overcome it! It's wonderful to hear stories like that ❤️ That realization sent me on a journey and I'm actually the happiest right now that I've ever been .

Yes!!! It really is like that! CPTSD here and the realization that I find intimacy and the idea of finally being happy ✨️terrifying✨️ 😂. It's great that your therapist is encouraging it and that it has helped you ❤️. Mine has put in a pre-order for a book that is nowhere near finished, bless her.

I love that! Also, people sleep on how effective writing is at helping one recover from trauma. I have unlocked things about myself through writing that I never even touched on in therapy.

Spines And Spoilers @spinesandspoilers.bsky.social · 01/04/2026

I love that approach! It's great that you ultimately didn't let any of that hold you back. Reading and writing are so important these days and we need all the authors we can get ❤️

Right‽ I remember worrying about the end of the world a lot when I was younger and being reassured by teachers that there was no way we would live to see it. Like, who's laughing now Mr. Palaganes? (The answer is no one 😂😭)

Spines And Spoilers @spinesandspoilers.bsky.social · 01/04/2026

I kind of assume at this point that every year we're going to look back on ourselves saying stuff like "This really is our rock bottom" then laugh and cry hysterically while we pull out the shovels.

Spines And Spoilers @spinesandspoilers.bsky.social · 01/04/2026

Oh, they will definitely hate me, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make! 😂. I've been able to fill up a notebook since then, so I think Im okay. I hope that you were able to get back into the swing of things?

Spines And Spoilers @spinesandspoilers.bsky.social · 01/04/2026

That's so brutal! I'm sorry that happened! I JUST got over a 1.5 year writing slump so I refuse to let myself slip again right now. I just rewrote what I could and plan on going back to refine it during the editing process. That is now future me's problem 😂

Right??? When I was writing that scene I tried to remember all of the complaints I had about Bush as a teen. Ended up feeling like "My sweet summer child... "

110

Spines And Spoilers @spinesandspoilers.bsky.social · 01/04/2026

Truly, my character's gripes about Bush were huge for the time and kind of trivial by today's standards. Pretty sure Bush at least hasn't appeared on the Epstein list, which is such a low bar that it's doing the limbo with Satan.

Spines And Spoilers @spinesandspoilers.bsky.social · 01/04/2026

My book is set back in 2003 and one of my characters literally talks shit about George Bush. Igaf. 😂

Look, I would apologize for not posting as much to my social media profiles that focus on books lately (which I do love), but I'm genuinely the happiest I've ever been these days (because of life stuff), and am trying to accept that my reading moods very much have peaks and valleys. #booksky

Sadly, no 😭. I ended up rewriting it using different phrasing. My heart dropped when I realized though, but that was a WHOLE CHAPTER!

110

Spines And Spoilers @spinesandspoilers.bsky.social · 22/03/2026

I was ultimately able to re-write it, just not word for word. Definitely left some stuff out and added some stuff in, but it'll be okay haha .
