Should your site add Google's preferred sources button?
Spinal is a two-way Git-based CMS for static site generators, so your whole team can publish content without code.

My take? If you want the badge, start with the plain deeplink. It costs nothing and needs no script. Skip the JavaScript. The readers worth keeping come to your domain with or without a badge.

Also worth remembering: Google's pattern with publishers. - AMP asked for a parallel site format - Authorship asked for markup - Web Stories asked for a new page type. All three took real effort. All three were later retired. Just a pattern…

The reward? A “preferred“ badge inside AI surfaces that answer without a click. You would be promoting a Google feature to stand out inside the same system that reduced your traffic. 🤡

Google “recommends” loading its JS on every page of your site to render the button. But the preference only matters inside Google. The data flows to them. The work flows to you. 🫠

Google now lets readers pick your site as a "preferred source." Those readers then see your content flagged with a badge in Top Stories, AI Mode and AI Overviews. It is optional, and it asks something of you first. My thoughts.

AI tools cite other websites when they describe your company. A study of 1,851 sources found brand-owned pages made up 2.8% of citations. You can fix that.

You cannot make ChatGPT like your brand. You can make every public source agree on the basics only, not like you. Full playbook: spinalcms.com/blog/citatio...

Citations are back. Where AI gets its facts about your brand?
AI answers describe your company from other websites, not yours. What the 2026 data shows and a five step playbook to keep those mentions accurate.

Katarzyna @spinalcms.com · 23/09/2026
4. Claim the missing profiles. Fix the wrong ones. Most platforms ask for six facts: name, address, phone, website, description, category. 5. Revisit key listings a few times a year. If you move or change prices, the old facts stay live in a dozen profiles.
100
Katarzyna @spinalcms.com · 23/09/2026
The playbook: 1. Search Google for your brand. Check the first five pages. Note every directory and review site. 2. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Mode the questions your customers ask. Record every third-party source they cite. 3. Find the gaps with a citation tool.

Katarzyna @spinalcms.com · 23/09/2026
Two kinds of mentions feed AI answers. Structured: Yelp, G2, Trustpilot, directories. Unstructured: Reddit, LinkedIn, news articles, product roundups. For SaaS, social and community sites took 45.7% of cited sources. Reddit appeared in every SaaS panel studied.

A study of 155.5 million AI citations found 80% go to a source a brand can influence. For local businesses, the top cited sites are MapQuest, TripAdvisor and Yelp. Wikipedia drew a sixth of MapQuest's citations.

OpenAI signed big lump-sum news deals. Google skips those checks and pays small and mid-size sites pennies. That sets a direct-payment precedent while it studies what AI systems value most.

Critics see a hedge, not a fair market. Spur's David Buttle says Google fears a per-use payment world, so it tests the plumbing now in case regulation forces that future, while cutting legal and PR risk.

Publishers call the math a black box. Several say payouts are peanuts next to ad revenue, too small to make opting in worth it. They can leave the pilot anytime.

Does a 1986 aircraft maintenance standard cure AI slop? Yes, it beats everything else I tested. But it will NOT make your writing good. Only “unsloppy”. Keep it away from anything that needs a voice, like landing pages and marketing texts. Full article: spinalcms.com/blog/how-a-1...
