1/2 Today we manipulated our mesocosms by increasing their alkalinity. In this video (courtesy of Kristian Spilling, from SYKE Finland) you can see our device — "the spider" — releasing NaOH solution into the mesocosm. Isn’t it cool?

Something was strange with the oxygen data. I had a closer look at the sensor and found a barnacle attached to the tip. How much does a #barnacle respire?

The #Finmari benthic lander was successfully deployed today. It will measure near-bottom flow, particle and nutrient dynamics for the next 6 weeks in the RCF #PHYTOTRANS project. @gtk-fi.bsky.social @finmari-ri.bsky.social @syke.fi @spilling.bsky.social

New paper. We show that the phosphate pool is still increasing in the Gulf of Finland and picophytoplankton, seem to play an important role in its uptake. This is opposed the the more traditional view of filamentous cyanobacteria doing this. doi.org/10.1002/lno....

Picophytoplankton act as the primary consumers of excess phosphorus after the spring bloom in the eutrophic Baltic Sea
Eutrophication in the Baltic Sea has caused an imbalance in the inorganic nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P) ratio, leaving excess phosphate (PO4) after the phytoplankton spring bloom that terminates aft...

I had the pleasure of being the opponent in the defense of Maryam Abidizadegan. I learned a lot about cryptophytes. Big congrats Maryam

Just published: ocean alkalinity enhancement does not seem to affect carbon export. Results from a #kosmos mesocosm experiment in Gran Canaria bg.copernicus.org/articles/22/... @geomarkiel.bsky.social @sykefi.bsky.social

Particle fluxes by subtropical pelagic communities under ocean alkalinity enhancement
Abstract. Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) has been proposed as a carbon dioxide removal technology (CDR), allowing for long-term storage of carbon dioxide in the ocean. By changing the carbonate sp...
