Playing around with adding a new hot pepper enemy that leaves a fire trail hazard when he butt scoots around. If the player touches the fire, they get ignited and take damage over time until he rolls. Going to add some pepper recipes that allow you to ignite enemies too #gamedev #indiedev #godot

One thing I always struggle with in game dev is making things too hard on the first pass with a high barrier of entry. It’s easy to make a game hard. It’s a lot harder to make a game fun. Currently working on a better tutorial level that ramps the difficulty better. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

Without changing anything in my code, I suddently started experiencing a crash at a specific location. Did some debugging and figured out what was causing it. It made sense, but what I can't figure out is HOW WAS IT WORKING BEFORE? I WAS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

After getting some feedback, it seems that the combo attack was a bit too slow and sluggish, so I increased the speed for the combo trigger window and it feels WAY better. Starting to feel like a proper, rolling-pin wielding action hero. #indiegame #indiedev #gamedev #godot

How I feel making indie games VS How I look making indie games
Neo from the Matrix movies stopping a storm of bullets with an outstretched hand. The lovable actor Keanu Reeves in the real world looking very relatable normal and slightly scruffy

It's funny how sometimes stuff we put in our games that we think will be trivially easy turns out incredibly hard. I started testing full, semi-randomized room layouts in my roguelike I can barely make it through the first room alive. Gotta figure out how to tone it down. #gamedev #indiedev #godot

Recently switched from C# to GDScript in Godot and my code styling is utterly embarassing. I keep forgetting to use snake_case where I should and I'm accidentally reverting to C# code styling with camelCase and PascalCase on everything with no rhyme or reason. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #godot

I added an unlockable attack upgrade that grants you a marinara based splash damage effect on your attacks (you have to collect enough tomatoes to cook the marinara first). Makes it a bit easier to take on multiple vegetables at once. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #godot

Been spending the last couple of days on a new prototype. It's about a kitchenware-wielding chef who fights giant feral vegetables (and possibly other foods) in order to collect them as ingredients for his dishes. Let the man cook! #indiegame #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine

After a few weeks of work a some initial gameplay validation testing of my latest prototype, it’s clear that the core concept doesn’t work very well and the game needs to be shelved. Always sad to start over from scratch, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. #godot #indiedev #indiegame #gamedev

I found a typo in my combat damage formula that was causing some wonky scaling behavior in the mid and late game. Unfortunately, all my early game flow was balanced to the typo. Now I get to start over with balance and stats from the ground up. Womp womp. #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame #GodotEngine

My adventurer characters are still fighting green capsules, so I decided to whip up a real enemy model. Based on the adventurer model I did previously: just recolored, given Yoda ears, a different weapon, and the animations slightly adjusted. #indiegame #indiedev #gamedev #blender #godotengine

Turns out implementing just the UI of skill trees (not including the implementation of what the upgrades actually do) takes a loooooong time. And that’s even with garbo looking placeholder UI assets that I’m too ashamed to show, but hey! I got it working! #Godot #indiedev #indiegame #gamedev

Started prototyping a new project. Got tired of looking at capsule meshes for characters, so I modelled up this little dungeon adventurer thug as a replacement. Here's his idle, run, attack, and death animations. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #blender

Got sick of the flat, misty blue sky my prototype currently had so I quickly added in a proper skybox and it’s kind of amazing how big a difference that one small change makes. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #Godot

Spent a couple hours trying to do a new UI theme design only to find that the result looked way worse than my placeholders. Thank goodness I backed everything up before starting so I could nuke my UI abomination from orbit and get back to where I was before. UI is hard. #gamedev #indiedev #Godot

Having played my prototype for hours during its development, I thought it was relatively bug free. Tonight I got my 7 year old nephew to playtest it for me a bit. Sure enough, he immediately found an audio bug that has somehow eluded me this entire time. Typical. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #godot

First short prototype is up on itch! Would love to get any feedback if you’d be willing to give it a go. Still deciding if I’m gonna pursue the full version of this game, so all feedback helps. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #godot spicybytegames.itch.io/whisperwind-...

One of the last things I needed to implement for my initial prototype was swimming. Got it added yesterday. The water itself is a little rough and will need more work once I get past the prototyping phase, but I like how the swim animations look in it. #godot #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame

I have a chronic problem spending way too much time overpolishing what should be rough prototypes. I spent 3 hours last night fixing a tiny edge case visual bug that doesn’t even matter other than making my eye twitch with the knowledge it existed. AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH #gamedev #indiedev

I got my audio manager working for basic sound effects and started adding a few into the game. Some of these are likely gonna be only placeholders for the initial rough draft of the game, but I like how they sound and make the game feel. #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Modeled, rigged, and animated this little chicken for use in my latest project (gonna have a little quest where you have to herd a few of them into a pen). Went with this squishy jumping animation for his movement instead of a walk/run because it seemed cuter. #blender #indiedev #gamedev #3dmodeling

Added in a super super basic inventory system and made it so you can get items from chests. The chest functionality took far longer than I'm willing to admit to get everything working and decoupled. It's still very barebones and ugly but at least it works. #Godot #gamedev #indiedev

Got the beginnings of the interact system working. Got the interaction focus outline, smooth camera repositioning, and reorienting the player towards the interactable all working. No dialogue system built yet, so it just goes back to idle after the interacting state is done #Godot #gamedev #indiedev

As I continue to learn and practice blender, I’ve been trying different versions of stylized trees. I definitely need more practice, but I could use all of your opinions. Which one so far looks better? #Blender #indiedev #gamedev #3dModelling

Spruced up my test island with some textures, water, and a tiny bit of atmospheric fog. It’s probably not the greatest thing to be working on aesthetics this early when I have a lot more core functionality I need to add, but it’s fun to experiment while I’m learning 3D. #Godot #gamedev #indiedev

I made the beginnings of an island so I don't have to test on ugly orange CSG meshes anymore. It's very rough, but I learned a ton about the workflow and I think it's okay for my first attempt. Will probably end up redoing it from scratch several times to practice. #Godot #gamedev #indiedev

Been tweaking the animations a bit. It's not much, but I am finding that small changes can go a long way to make things feel better. Added a bank/tilt when turning while gliding and added a tiny bit of squish when impacting the ground. #gamedev #indiedev #Godot

Threw my character in Godot and gave him a character controller. Also added in this little magical float/glide thing that is pretty fun to fly around with. I'm not sure what this is going to become, but it's a start. Gonna start playing around with other movement mechanics #gamedev #indiedev #Godot

I got a little burnt out from my last project and took a break. I’ll go back to it eventually but I wanted to try and learn something new, so I started messing around in Blender. I made this super simple character and got a very basic idle animation. #blender #3dmodelling #gamedev

One of the small quests in the first level is going to be hunting crows to get their feathers to give to the town fletcher (still need to do the feather spawning). They fly away when you get too close so you can't sword them to death. The crossbow is needed. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #godot

Finished the werewolf enemy. He is immune to sword damage until you stun him by hitting him with the crossbow a few times, although you need a bit of space to hit the shot as if you are too close/point blank, he'll block it. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #godot

Been working on the animations for this little werewolf enemy. It's a rough draft and needs some adjustments, but it's a work in progress for prototyping. These are most of the animations needed for its planned behaviors. Still gotta do his attack and getting stunned. #gamedev #pixelart #aseprite

Started experimenting with NPC voices. I recorded myself making a few random mouth sounds, bitcrushed them, and randomized them playing with slight pitch variations when you talk to Eustace the shopkeeper. (He's the only NPC in the game so far.) #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #godot

I started building my game’s shop system and I spent way longer on the UI than on any other UI element, but it still looks like trash 😂 Good thing it’s just placeholder visuals. When I actually get to polishing the UI, I’m gonna have to do some serious research into UI/UX design. #gamedev #indiedev

The main way of healing is going to be resting in beds or at campfires. Got the campfire working tonight. Heals the player and respawns previously killed monsters (similar to how benches work in Hollow Knight). A little unsure about the resting tune. I think it needs work. #gamedev #indiedev #godot

The main collectables in my game are enchanted candles that you place on shrines to break a curse on the town and open up new pathways and progression in the map. Here is the sequence when you have enough to break the curse. Buildings get clean and flowers grow. #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #godot
