Here's a post from a few years ago that captures my excitement around the fediverse, and I still think that we should want more journa.host/@spencerdail...
If you had said 3 months ago that I'd be boosting posts about decentralized protocol projects, I'd have channeled years of web3 skepticism into a categorical denial. But here we are in blockchain-less Mastodon-land, which has totally rehabilitated the brand of 'decentralized' and reminded us of the great successes of email, internet, and torrent tech, and that we should want more.

I can't recall anything close to this level of ratio-ing in my 15 years of HN-ing. Many top comments here focus on the financial engineering aspect of this deal (Alphabet owns ~7% of SpaceX) and the ubiquity of circular deals in the industry. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4841...

a grand total of 0 of these articles mention the context that Binance paid $4B in 2023 to settle with the US over violations of sanctions on Iran and that Trump pardoned CZ in 2025 after shady financial entanglements with his crypto ventures/coins like USD1. 1/2

Brockman's testimony had some bombshells: a previously unreported $10M deal with Altman that may not have been disclosed in the non-profit's filings. Brockman solicited donations from investors like Marissa Mayer, saying he too had donated $100K. But he hadn't! etc www.techmeme.com/260504/p39#a...
screenshot of discussion on Techmeme:
@michelletomkim: @techreview In October 2015, when Greg Brockman was soliciting donations to found OpenAI as a nonprofit, he sent an email to Marissa Mayer, who was the CEO of Yahoo at the time, asking for a donation. He told her that he himself was donating $100,000 to OpenAI, and made the same claim to
Gary Marcus / @garymarcus: Wow. Greg Brockman had a 10M side deal with Altman even in the early nonprofit days, which not disclosed to Elon or (I believe) in nonprofit filings to the company.

hey there Jason @snell.zone - I just wanted to put currentkey.com on your radar. This little Mac app (of mine) lets you assign custom icons and Banners per macOS Space. It's unique! (It does a whole lot more, too.) I hope you like it! 🙏 apps.apple.com/us/app/curre...

This is macOS Tahoe. Can you spot the menu bar? ... 🕵 🤦🏻 On the bright side, testing shows that full compatibility for CurrentKey Stats will be achieved (after small update, in the works to fix a few tiny things). And then, ICYMI, a major update just dropped:

A lot of opinions from crypto leaders, but none mention *why* Dems stopped supporting stablecoin legislation: Trump is taking money from strangers via $TRUMP and taking billions in investment for his own company's stablecoin. The real problem is: crypto leaders look past corruption and are in a cult

this is a cardboard box factory near Fernandina Beach. In the 70s, Amelia River was considered "dead" because of the factory's waste dumping practices. Then the EPA happened, and now it's a thriving ecosystem: both the environment and local tourism-heavy economy. RIP EPA gizmodo.com/the-supreme-...

"Overnight" trading sessions have begun for US equities and we get our third example of tariffs hurting/slowing the economy... I reckon enough to (likely) put a major dent in carbon emissions in the near term

Second example of tariffs reducing carbon emissions output globally. Recessions/depressions cause major fall offs in fuel consumption. Nobody tell him

First example of reducing carbon output. Now throw in all the other economic struggles that will come from the tariffs, and you actually start improving our climate change posture

OpenAI announced a ChatGPT Mac app but (for most of us) there has been no info about it in ChatGPT's interface. When you ask ChatGPT about it, it sends you, incorrectly, to a Github page of a 3rd-party app that's basically a wrapper. Not great! (Here's the link it provides github.com/lencx/ChatGPT )

I wrote about why using SMS to authenticate users in any way (but especially for password resets and account recovery) is a fundamentally broken idea, and companies need to own up to all the SIM-swap attacks they are allowing. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3926... keydiscussions.com/2024/02/05/s...

For years I've seen this take go viral, and it's a bad one. With this change,Apple further entrenched a broken authentication system. companies rely heavily on phone numbers for logging in (including money managers like Cash app), making us prime targets of SIM swaps www.techmeme.com/search/query...
