“Schadenfreude pyjamas” to describe enjoying the downfall of villains, whilst eating a bowl of cereal in your pjs, would be a great term, I’m jotting that down.

I can't recall who pointed it out here some weeks ago - may have been a video essay, actually, my mind is a bit eh lately - but they pointed to a lot of intense promoting by her publisher and eventually WB, that pushed the "she got kids to read more!" myth, with numbers indicating that wasn't so.

Back in the 90s, I thought "well, it's another book about magic, yay, younger kids can enjoy what we liked", and when I did check out one, like you, I thought "...wait, Jill Murphy, Diana Wynne Jones, already did this", & lost interest, bc, as you point out, there were *loads* of others to read.

Granted this is more via the Horizon subreddits, but there have been complaints that the focus on a new PuBG-like online game didn’t just slow progress on Horizon 3, but had scuppered a lot of momentum elsewhere, eg the proposed Netflix series.

As others have mentioned, what's interesting isn't just that Alien 3 annoyed Biehn, Weaver et al (and Fincher is still touchy about a film that wasn't entirely his fault), but that you had comics that used Hicks et al, but then had to rename the characters when Alien 3 came out.

Hislop and Private Eye surf on goodwill, but gatekeep and gaslight. As for satire, every so often I think about Chris Morris and his line (which I'm no doubt mangling, sorry) about whether as a satirist you're not actually playing to the court, rather than talking truth to power.

This is something that for my sins I only came to learn about perhaps a decade ago. It also speaks to, in my view, oversimplified historical narratives (especially in pop culture) when it comes to "people of their time", in N. America and in the UK too, come to think of it.

@fatapollo.myatproto.social is also right in that the audiobook is really good, with Lance Henriksen narrating, along with Michael Biehn in places as Hicks (No Weaver, though Laurel Lefkow voices Ripley here), and along w/ the comic book, I prefer this to what we got in reality.

And if we’re are going to go that route, you had a lot of German socialists join the Union side fighting because of slavery eg August Willich (who famously wanted to duel Karl Marx because he thought Karl was too conservative).

Yes, 100% this. I'd read an interview or two that would bring that up, and I'd sigh. It's actually infuriating how the ladder was kicked away, and options to explore without going into debt removed, in less than 40+ years.

Without social housing and the NHS and the welfare stare more broadly, we would have never had the British cultural explosion of the 60s and 70s with huge global influence wildly disproportionate to the UK’s size. That’s how working class kids became global superstars.

Michael Caine *is* a right winger, but in more than one interview you can find online, he discusses how the 60s were when a lot of the working class were no longer going to "know our place" and went out into the arts - and yes, The People That Really Matter have resented this greatly.

As an aside, I remember when Paul Krugman & the FT's Martin Wolf, not exactly a pair of anti-capitalists, each wrote about how the then-incoming Labour government (2024) had to drastically raise taxes on the wealthy & get rid of austerity to actually improve things in Britain, and, well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

That insistence on TINA is also part of why so many people gravitated to Labour under Corbyn, and his Arts for the People was such a great idea, reminding me of FDR's Federal Project Number One, which we sorely need now. Juliet Jacques did a great interview w/ him on Arts for the People.

I really like Arts Emergency and what they do, but in a better Britain, they shouldn't have to exist. Successive governments shouldn't be decimating the arts or the welfare infrastructure at large, solely to feed the armed forces or the rich.
