🧵 I'm experimenting with Threads a little more these days since it's way more Taiwan-centric and generally better vibes than some other places. For anyone also using the service you can find me there with my IG handle: www.threads.com/@synapticx

Here's a screenshot of the map as of today. Every point has a corresponding entry with additional information, although data quality varies quite a lot. Some of these places are long-vanished, but the remnants of many of these still exist in some form or another.

A map of population decline in Taiwan from 1980 to 2020 from an article by Di Hu in the International Journal of Geo-Information. Local populations sometimes peaked in the 1960s, particularly in eastern Taiwan, so that decline is already baked-in by 1980. Not surprised to see Yunlin here!

Snapshots from a quick visit to Hawaii Cinema (โรงหนังฮาวาย) in Bangkok. Despite the abandoned appearance it was still operational when I visited in 2018, though it wasn't showing conventional films. From a scan of reviews on Google Maps it might finally be out of business as of 2025. #TheaterHunt

Went for a spin around Changhua City to knock off a bunch of historic sites from my list and so many of them are in the midst of restoration. Really cool to see the city take its abundant cultural heritage so seriously (only a little sad I couldn't document the original condition of those sites).

This 2004 quote by indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch has long been a fave of mine, working at the edge of copyright as I have for so long, but it takes on new life in the age of LLMs and generative AI. If there's really no going back... how do we make our theft authentic?
A poster with this Jim Jarmusch quote in highlighted orange and blue text on a yellow background:

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to."

It is originally taken from MovieMaker Magazine #53, Winter, January 22, 2004.

I asked a follow-up question, essentially "examine PRC claims to Taiwan under international law and evaluate them on merit". Maybe it's Perplexity using some extra secret sauce but... these answers seem pretty good to me overall. Sources: GTI, Lawfareblog, CSIS, jstor, etc.
Screenshot from a Perplexity/Deepseek answer about PRC claims to Taiwan:

The People's Republic of China's (PRC) claims over Taiwan are complex and multifaceted, with some elements having more legal merit than others under international law. Let's examine the key aspects of the PRC's position and analyze their validity:
Succession of States Theory
The PRC claims it is the successor state to the Republic of China (ROC) and thus inherits sovereignty over all ROC territories, including Taiwan. This argument has some basis in international law, as the PRC did replace the ROC in most international bodies, including the United Nations16. However, this theory is complicated by Taiwan's continued de facto independence and separate governance since 1949.
UN Resolution 2758
The PRC frequently cites UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 as evidence of its sovereignty over Taiwan. However, this interpretation is an overreach15. The resolution primarily addresses China's representation in the UN, recognizing the PRC as "the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations"16. It does not explicitly address Taiwan's status or sovereignty.Screenshot from a Perplexity/Deepseek answer about PRC claims to Taiwan:

One China Principle
The PRC's insistence on the "One China" principle forms the core of its claim. While this principle is widely acknowledged diplomatically, it's important to note that many countries' "One China" policies are intentionally ambiguous and do not necessarily equate to recognition of PRC sovereignty over Taiwan2.
Territorial Integrity Argument
Beijing often frames potential military action against Taiwan as an internal matter, citing territorial integrity. This argument relies on the premise that Taiwan is already part of China, which is contested1. International law generally prohibits the use of force, with exceptions for self-defense or UN Security Council authorization.
Deeper Analysis
Legitimate Concerns:
Historical claims: The PRC's position is partly rooted in historical claims to Taiwan, dating back to the Qing Dynasty and the outcome of World War II13.
International recognition: The PRC's position is strengthened by the fact that most countries officially recognize it as the sole legitimate government of China16.
Strategic interests: While not a legal argument, the PRC's desire to control Taiwan is driven by legitimate strategic concerns about its maritime security and regional influence.Screenshot from a Perplexity/Deepseek answer about PRC claims to Taiwan:

Problematic or Propagandistic Elements:
Misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758: The PRC's expansive interpretation of this resolution goes beyond its actual text and intent153.
Disregard for self-determination: The PRC's position largely ignores the principle of self-determination and the wishes of Taiwan's population15.
Selective application of international law: The PRC often invokes international law when it supports its position but disregards it when it doesn't, particularly concerning the use of force14.
Oversimplification of Taiwan's status: The PRC's stance doesn't account for the complex historical and political developments that have shaped Taiwan's current status7.
Conclusion
While the PRC's claims to Taiwan have some basis in historical and legal arguments, they are not unequivocally supported by international law. The situation is further complicated by Taiwan's decades-long de facto independence, its fulfillment of criteria for statehood under the Montevideo Convention, and the principle of self-determination56.
The international community's approach to this issue remains largely pragmatic, balancing recognition of the PRC with unofficial relations with Taiwan. This ambiguity in international relations reflects the complex and contested nature of Taiwan's status under international law.

I'll attach a screenshot from that section. 52 sources were consulted, mostly expected ones (Wikipedia, MoFA, SCMP, Taipei Times, Focus Taiwan, BBC, The Diplomat). The constitutional crisis part seems mostly sourced from Global Taiwan Institute.
Screenshot of Perplexity's output to a question about Taiwan's political status:

Current Political Dynamics
President William Lai Ching-te leads the government, representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)1. However, his administration faces substantial challenges from the opposition-controlled legislature, where the Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP) coalition has recently passed significant amendments affecting governmental operations2.
Constitutional Crisis
A serious constitutional crisis has emerged in early 2025 due to recent legislative amendments:
Judicial Paralysis
The Constitutional Court has been effectively paralyzed by new requirements mandating 10 justices for hearings and 9 for constitutional rulings, while only 8 justices currently serve after the legislature rejected President Lai's nominees2.
Legislative Control
The opposition has passed three significant bills that:
Alter election and recall procedures
Modify constitutional court operations
Change government funding allocations1

Maybe you've seen those classic tiled Taiwanese bathtubs before, but you probably haven't seen one as deluxe as this outdoor pool! It's in front of the Japanese colonial era residence later appropriated for use by the Keelung Fortress Commander in the aftermath of WW2... newly reopened as a café!
A large outdoor pool lined with multicolor tile. There are old stones around and a lawn surrounding.

Did you know there's an old movie theater overlooking Ningxia Night Market in Taipei? The interior has been completely gutted but you can still make out traces of the seating, projection room, and toilets at the back.
