Fair Vote Canada 🗳️🍁 @fairvote.ca · 22/09/2026
Why are BCers facing a costly, unnecessary snap election? First-past-the-post. When 40% of the vote can deliver an increased majority, politicians choose power grabs over cooperation. Proportional representation removes these toxic incentives. Read our statement: www.fairvote.ca/22/09/2026/f...

Canada’s Bill C-22 is a repackaged version of last year’s surveillance nightmare and @signal.org says it would rather leave Canada than comply. Good intentions don’t prevent abuse, capabilities do. The only guarantee is technical impossibility. This commitment to privacy is why I trust Signal.

Rich Communications Services (RCS) end-to-end encryption is finally available between Apple and Google devices. RCS is the successor to SMS. This does not include metadata, i.e. context on the conversation, but at least the actual message content is encrypted. I strongly recommend @signal.org.

@signal.org please speak out against the extremely problematic Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act, that is being considered by the Canadian government. They are downplaying the risk under the guise of only requesting encrypted information for just reasons. 🙄 The only security guarantee is no door. 🔒

A few of us asked this early on. TL;DR is that it is planned and the direction they want to go. My take is I am not going to invest a lot of time posting on Gander until I understand what the migration to my AT domain looks like. I think there is a nontrivial chance that I might need to start over.
Screenshot from Gander Social from 2 months ago where Gander confirms custom domains, crossposting/interactions [on the Atmosphere] is planned. They also expressed excitement for Eurosky launching. They acknowledge that getting their app-view into shape was their initial focus, with full interoperability being the goal.

The benefit is that it’s agreed upon standard that it supported by most operating systems, browsers, and password managers. The user experience and education story for passkeys definitely needs work, but the technical design and implementation is sound. Now it just needs to be easy for all users.

de ville weppenaar @speakofthedv.ca · 26/04/2026
Not necessarily. They would still need to be able to unlock your device either via the security pin/pass code, or biometric unlock. How you store and sync passkeys works similar to passwords, but with the benefit that there’s never something to remember. They are generated on your device.
210
de ville weppenaar @speakofthedv.ca · 26/04/2026
It comes down to what account recovery option you have set up for your credentials and/or email. Losing all your devices isn’t a risk that is unique to passkeys though. The same can be said for password managers or iCloud keychain. That’s typically why you need to have a recovery contact.
