SPC Oct 2, 2026 Day 4-8 Severe Weather Outlook ⛈️DISCUSSION🌪️ Additional Details Here.

Day 4-8 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0317 AM CDT Fri Oct 02 2026

Valid 051200Z - 101200Z

...DISCUSSION...
Severe storm potential from Monday/D4 to Friday/D8 is forecast to be
minimal.

A deep upper trough will move across eastern Canada and the
northeastern USA Mon/D4 into Tue/D5, with a cold front already
offshore and high pressure building in from the west. Behind the
ejecting upper trough, moderate northwest flow aloft will persist
across the northern tier of states, with some trough amplification
possible over the Great Lakes Wed/D6 into Fri/D8. That said, a
minimally unstable air mass will exist over most of the CONUS, with
little severe thunderstorm potential. A few stronger storms cannot
be ruled out around Thu/D7 over the upper Midwest beneath the
northwest flow regime, but this low-predictability scenario will
depend heavily on enough moisture returning to the region. As such,
no areas are currently forecast.

Day 4-8 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0400 AM CDT Thu Oct 01 2026

Valid 041200Z - 091200Z

...DISCUSSION...
Early next week, a large-scale upper-level trough will move from the
Great Lakes region into the western Atlantic, as mid-level flow
become west-northwesterly over much of the nation. At the surface, a
large surface high will be dominant on Sunday and Monday from the
Mississippi Valley to the East Coast.

Further west into the Great Plains, a cold front is forecast to
advance southeastward through the Dakotas on Tuesday. Ahead of the
front, moisture advection is expected over the Great Plains. By
Tuesday afternoon, an axis of instability should be in place from
western Kansas into north-central Nebraska. Along and near the
instability axis, an isolated severe threat will be possible from
late afternoon into the evening. On Wednesday, the axis of
instability is forecast to shift southeastward into the mid Missouri
Valley. An isolated severe threat will again be possible near and
ahead of the front from late afternoon into the evening.

By Thursday, model forecasts move an upper-level trough into the
Great Lakes, as a subtle shortwave ridge moves through the central
U.S. A relatively dry and cool airmass over much of the U.S. is
expected to make thunderstorm development unlikely in most areas.

Day 4-8 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0352 AM CDT Wed Sep 30 2026

Valid 031200Z - 081200Z

...DISCUSSION...
A mid-level cyclonic flow pattern will be in place over the weekend
across the northeastern U.S., as multiple shortwave troughs move
through the larger-scale trough. A cold front will advance southward
to near the Gulf Coast. Thunderstorm development will be possible
along and near the front during the day on Saturday and Sunday, but
no severe threat is expected.

During the upcoming early to mid week, mid-level flow is forecast to
become west-northwesterly across much of the U.S. A dry and
relatively cool airmass is forecast to be in place over the eastern
half of the nation. On the western edge of the high pressure area,
low-level moisture advection will be possible across the Great
Plains. Thunderstorm development may occur on Tuesday and Wednesday
in parts of the central Plains, as a cold front approaches. Although
instability and deep-layer shear are not forecast to be sufficient
for a substantial severe threat, a few marginally severe storms will
be possible in areas that destabilize the most.

NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0345 AM CDT Tue Sep 29 2026

Valid 021200Z - 071200Z

...DISCUSSION...
Over the weekend, the pattern will consist of a large-scale trough
over the northeastern U.S.. Multiple shortwave troughs are forecast
to move eastward through the flow. A cold front appears likely to
move from the mid Mississippi and lower Ohio Valleys southward to
near the Gulf Coast. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will be
possible each afternoon ahead of the front. Deep-layer shear is
expected to be too weak for a severe threat.

Early next week, mid-level flow is forecast to be west-northwesterly
over much of the nation. A relatively cool and dry airmass will be
in place over most of the continental U.S. The exception could be
along parts of the immediate Gulf Coast, where moisture and
instability may be sufficient for thunderstorm development. The
severe threat is expected to be minimal.

NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK

Valid 271200Z - 021200Z

...DISCUSSION...
A mid-level cutoff low will meander along the East Coast and will
gradually depart the region early next week as a mid-level trough
amplifies over the Rockies and impinges on the central U.S. Medium
range guidance consensus varies in the morphology of the upper
trough. The 00Z GFS features a rapidly progressing upper wave over
the Plains to the OH Valley Days 5-7 (Monday-Wednesday), while the
00Z Euro shows a mid-level trough evolving into a cut-off low that
meanders over the Plains through the week. Both scenarios result in
an appreciably strong surface low developing over the central Plains
sometime mid next week, accompanied by near 70 F surface dewpoints
and a buoyancy/vertical shear overlap supportive of a severe threat.
However, too much variability in guidance precludes the delineation
of severe probabilities this outlook.

NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0324 AM CDT Wed Sep 23 2026

Valid 261200Z - 011200Z

...DISCUSSION...
Upper ridging over the Plains will continue to break down this
weekend in favor of a more progressive upper-air pattern next
week.At least one pronounced mid-level trough will eject into the
Plains and Mid- to Upper-MS Valley in the Days 6-8/Monday-Wednesday
period.Deterministic medium-range guidance consensus depicts surface
low development over the central and southern Plains in this
time-frame, encouraging seasonable low-level moisture return in the
process.

At the very least, moisture-driven buoyancy and subsequent scattered
thunderstorm development should occur across the central and
southern Plains into the Mid- to Upper MS Valley next
Monday-Wednesday. However, vertical wind shear accompanying this
pattern is still expected to be weak. While a localized severe
threat may materialize at some point Monday-Wednesday, relevant
details are too unclear to pinpoint with probabilities at this
point, in agreement with the consensus of ML/AI calibrated guidance.

Day 4-8 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0323 AM CDT Sun Sep 20 2026

Valid 231200Z - 281200Z

...DISCUSSION...
Upper ridging will persist over the central U.S. through the
forecast period, with a meandering upper trough evolving into a
cut-off upper low off of the Mid-Atlantic Coast and an upper trough
amplifying over the Interior West late this week into next weekend.
Through the week, a relatively dry low-level airmass will settle
east of the MS River and west of the Rockies, limiting the severe
threat over the western and eastern third of the U.S. Some modest
moisture return is likely across the Plains given lee troughing.
However, upper support will be weak, which should limit the severe
threat across the central U.S. as well. As such, no organized severe
threats seem apparent for the CONUS Days 4-8 (Wednesday-Sunday).
