PART 1: A snippet of the first part of my talk at @conversationatthecrossroads “Reclaiming Democracy” event. This is also in my book, Nature’s Last Dance: Tales of Wonder in an Age of Extinction. For those wanting to do more, I include a list of suggestions at the end of my book. But here are some quick ones:CALL & EMAIL POLITICIANS (REGULARLY)- Call for stronger environmental laws, increased nature investment, enhanced community consultation, higher tax on super profits and billionaires. - Support real-time political donation disclosure, limits on corporate lobbying, anti-corruption measures and end deceptive political ads. - Advocate for wellbeing budgets: Alternative measures of progress that go beyond GDP. - Subsidy reform: End public subsidies for activities that harm ecosystems and communities. Subsidise activities that regenerate nature (like subsidies for farmers to protect biodiversity or purchase renewables)* Support @davidpocock work around Duty of Care Bill and the Gas Tax (ourgas.com.au) FINANCE & LAW:* Join shareholder activism campaigns: @marketforces @six.invest.au * Support environmental litigation and call for the Rights of Nature (led by indigenous people). @garnglobal @environmentaldefendersoffice INFORMATION & MEDIA* Actively support independent, science-informed journalism and public broadcasters.* Ask critical questions about information sources: Who produced this? Who funded it? Who benefits from its spread? * Media Bias Chart: adfontesmedia.com TECHNOLOGY- Demand strong ethical standards and governance for AI- Require social media platforms to offer “opt-in” to algorithms.
