Warming Is Starting to Feed Itself
As the planet warms, permafrost, wildfires, wetlands, and freshwaters start releasing greenhouse gases of their own. Here's what the science says, in plain terms.
010
Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
These findings underscore the urgency of reducing anthropogenic emissions, incorporating these warming-induced emissions when setting climate policies, and investigating whether there are additional mitigation strategies to slow or reduce climate feedbacks.
100
Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Under a moderate human emission scenario, these feedbacks could add the equivalent of 2X all current U.S. annual CO2 emissions and 6X all current U.S. annual methane emissions. That’s a huge additional source of warming that most climate goals and policies aren’t accounting for.
100
Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
While there’s still a good degree of uncertainty in how these feedbacks will unfold, scientists now have the most robust estimates to date across four major natural sources of greenhouse gas emissions: permafrost, wildfires, wetlands, and freshwaters.

Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
As Earth heats up, natural sources are starting to release greenhouse gases of their own, on top of human emissions. While well known, modeling these Earth system feedbacks is extremely difficult, meaning they have largely been left out of estimates of future warming.

Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
New research led by Spark estimates warming-induced emissions from permafrost thaw, wildfires, and other sources could amplify global warming by approximately 20–30% & add an estimated 0.2–0.4°C of warming this century (with significant uncertainty).

With support from philanthropic partners, Spark recently launched a new effort to accelerate the science on Earth's energy imbalance, led by our Chief Scientist Phil Duffy and involving several of the scientists quoted in the Economist article as advisors.

We urgently need to understand what is driving the planet’s declining reflectivity and determine what it might mean for future warming, yet the community working on this is small and underfunded.
110
Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Concerningly, climate models systematically underpredict these observed trends, suggesting that the models policy makers rely on to set climate targets and prepare for impacts may be underpredicting future warming.
110
Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
The warming influence (technically, the “radiative forcing”) of declining reflectivity is enormous, roughly equal to that of all human CO2 emissions since 1750.
110
Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Cleanup of reflective particulate pollution also plays a role. Declining reflectivity is driving a rapid increase in Earth’s energy imbalance, which is the fundamental driver of global warming and which has doubled since 2000.
110
Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Global warming is typically understood as greenhouse gases trapping heat that would otherwise escape to space. But human-caused warming is now driving feedbacks–like shrinking ice, snow, and cloud cover–that make the planet less reflective causing it to absorb more sunlight.

Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Big story in this week’s @economist.com about a major risk we are also increasingly focused on: Earth is reflecting less sunlight back into space, rapidly increasing Earth’s Energy Imbalance and making the world hotter.

The implications of this and future research into this topic could be significant. If methane breaks down more slowly, it will remain in the atmosphere longer, which means: higher methane concentrations and even more warming.
100
Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 25/03/2026
This process typically breaks down most methane in about a decade. The MIT researchers' key takeaway: methane’s lifetime in the atmosphere is not fixed. It responds to changes in atmospheric chemistry and environmental conditions, which are evolving with climate change.
110
Spark Climate Solutions @sparkclimate.bsky.social · 25/03/2026
While highly potent, methane typically breaks down in the atmosphere much faster than carbon dioxide. The study examines the main process controlling methane’s atmospheric lifetime: reactions with hydroxyl radicals, the Earth’s primary methane sink.
