iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Ahh. I can see a doctor either not knowing, not caring, or just not wanting to get into it with a patient around the exact mechanism that's blocking him from doing something. I'm sure he has the same convo every month w/a dozen ADHD patients. But i do wish they would be more precise w/language.

Why do I need to use so much of my brain to get the meds that my brain needs to function? I have a critically low amount of executive function and you want me to use it for this?

030

Every now and then I get somebody, who claims to be American, whose doctor supposedly writes them prescription for a 3-month supply of ADHD meds and I'm just like, In what world do you live?? What med is this?? Is your doctor just breaking the law??!

None of the images are showing for me, which sucks. They're all of the procession for Mr. Dale across Colorado.

000

Thank you, to Canada and to Mr Dale's family specifically, for sending us help. I know we have not done a whole lot in the past few years to deserve it. I do know a ton of people who are deeply appreciative of it. I hope we're able to do the same. 🇨🇦 ❤️‍🩹

And it feels so fucking inadequate to say (or imply) that this is somehow fighting fascism?? This is not fighting fascism. I am honestly still not sure how one fights fascism. But letting TFG destroy our trust in each other, to forget that we are here to help each other, is what TFG wants.

100

But this is also important. The fact that we help each other is important. The fact that we remember that we are all here to help each other, is important. The fact that we honor each other is important. I know Colorado has sent firefighters to Canada in the past, I'm not sure if any are there now.

100

And this is where I start to lose the thread, because I can't stop TFG from saying his stupid, short-sighted, bullying nonsense. And I also can't pretend it doesn't matter. I can't pretend that our ability to relate to each other--both as nations and as individuals--isn't being poisoned. 8/?

100

Everybody is appreciative beyond words of the men and women who do this work. I am safe in my bed at night because of the people who do this work. I am safe because of strangers who are willing to come here from California, and Canada, and Mexico, and other places, to help. 7/?

100

We're sending him home with as much honor as we can. There was a procession today, crossing basically the entire state, to get him from Montrose to DIA so he can fly home. Flags are at half-mast across the state. People are lining the overpasses. Everybody knows what was lost. 6/?

A map of Colorado showing the procession route for Nicholas Dale.

100

Mr Dale arrived to help. He came from far away, to help people he'd never heard of and would never know. It goes without saying that we never wanted to send him home this way. It breaks my heart to think about his family, waiting for him at the other end of all of this. 5/?

Standing people line a highway in Summit County, waiting for the procession that is bringing firefighter Nicholas Dale back to Canada to pass by.

100

This is a thing that we do, we humans: We help each other. Everyone who lives in an area that gets fires, or anyone who's even remotely involved in emergency management, knows that humans help each other. We send manpower and equipment to wherever it's needed. 4/?

Emergency vehicles form a procession to escort the body of downed firefighter Nicholas Dale from Gunnison, CO to Grand Junction.

About a week ago, a wildfire firefighter was killed. Specifically Nicholas Dale, from British Columbia, who died in the southwest part of the state when his helicopter crashed. He's on his way home today, back to Canada, back to his family. 3/?

(Really only about TFG because he can't stop being a dumbass, but if he hadn't mouthed off about the wildfires in Canada maybe I wouldn't have felt the need to post this, so, here we are.) 2/?

I'm sure it's been said 47 times, but: Jurassic Park. (My dad would want me to mention The Exorcist and Jaws)

I know you weren't there to hear it, but Alonzo Bodden absolutely nailed the "what's going to happen next week" prediction re: the world cup.

Say a little prayer by Aretha, truth hurts by lizzo, old school off the bright by the mighty mighty bosstones. It's not exactly "feel better," but singing along with radiohead forces you to take DEEP BREATHS which is sometimes what I need.

Also I've been off social media so I missed that you got a puppy! Congratulations!

Becca @spandrella.bsky.social · 22/05/2026

My friends adopted a puppy that they were told was a husky mix. He spent the next 8 months doubling in size every month. I think he topped out at 130 lbs. He was the best baby horse you could dream of. Maybe a malamute. Def not a husky.

A small, cute puppy is sitting next to a concrete porch. He has floppy ears and is looking up at a person who is not in the frame.

A very large, furry dog is asleep on an orange couch. He takes up roughly 1/3 of said couch.

Today in Things I Did Not Think I Would Need To Know For Library Work: Where the fuck do I buy caster socket inserts? Am I using the right word for the thing I want to buy, which I think is a caster socket insert? (I will figure this out tomorrow, I know the general answer is "hardware store")

I still remember this. It was hilarious.

I listen to that podcast sometimes, but it annoys me that the male host is always doing the teaching, and the female host is basically there to be talked at.

His name is Audie, btw, because he is a Phidippus audax. Or at least I think he is.

There is a jumping spider in my office and he's on my window blinds so I can't catch him under a cup and release him outside and I know (intellectually) that spiders are fine and good but emotionally my whole day is now making sure I know the location of the spider at all times.

Apologies if I'm pointing out something you already know, but there are vets who will come and euthanize him at your home so that you don't have to put him through the trauma of the car ride + vet office. I'm very sorry that this is happening. Love & peace to your kitty.

Some Sprouts locations have a reusable bag donation spot in the front of the store, but I don't know if that's a widespread policy or just enterprising employees.

Orchestration - Wikipedia

Wikipedia, at least, says it's pretty standard for film scores: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchest...

en.wikipedia.org

It might be a film music thing (I'm not sure either). It might also have been a time thing--Williams had 1 film score in '76, and then two in '77 (Star Wars & Close Encounters), and I'm guessing that turnaround time may have necessitated the input of more people.

2100

Becca @spandrella.bsky.social · 28/04/2026

Williams did write it (and was the conductor during the recording sessions). Morley was on the team that did the orchestration, aka assigning different parts to different instruments.

I work in an academic library with a bunch of old dissertations, and sometimes I flip to the back and read the acknowledgements.

No pets? I'm paying $35k a month and you won't let me have a dog?? It's fuzzed out on google maps, which is annoying, because I keep thinking "There's no way this building was always a house," but I can't see what it used to be.

Trying out XinXii for ebook distribution. It gets Amazon, Apple, B&N, Casa del Libro, Kobo, Google Play, Tolino, Everand, and maybe a few more. Seems to do audiobook too. The UI isn't great, but it's *free*.

Going through old periodicals at work and came across a (slightly mangled) copy of Library Journal from 2011 when @scalzi.com was promoting Fuzzy Nation

A cover of Library Journal magazine from May 2011. There is an artists rendering of John Scalzi on the cover, which advertises "Scalzi's Novel Reboot: The sf author's take on a classic, publishing today, and why we need libraries." The top right corner of the cover is torn off.
