Steve Hanley of The Fall (1979-1998). His bass parts were foundational to the sound of the group, never flashy but always interesting. Even Mark E Smith described him as being responsible for the Fall sound.

He went off UK TV about 10 years ago but even then it seemed like he only watched races he commentated on. Would always bang on about riders who’d done the Tour of California and I realised it was because they were the only riders he’d seen recently.

I used to get ilio-tibial band syndrome which was pain in the side and back of the knee, and headed it off by doing some specific stretches before every ride so look into that!

Was it just a random draw? Does seem very odd, I’d assume they would seed based on PB or world ranking or something like that, would surely level the playing field too, everybody having someone of similar ability on the other side so less likely to get the advantage of catching.

May I nominate Tom Dumoulin, grinding up climbs at one speed, getting dropped when people attack then appearing back in the group about a minute later, just minding his own business.

Regardless of what happens in these final 3km, this is a great ride from Remco.
