My memory is a collection of poorly-structured markdown documents now. Not because of AI, I'm just really disorganised.

I read this as Danny Kruger multiple times and was trying to work out what specifically about him you were referencing.

This must be a tiny number of people each year, it all feels so pathetically performative, but just keeps on ratcheting things into worse and worse places.

A while ago I mentioned that Bruce Boxleitner and I were helping Warners with the launch of their Babylon 5 YouTube channel. As part of that, the first of three brand new half-hour-plus interviews/discussions between me and Bruce will go online on Monday. www.youtube.com/@Babylon5

He's stopped predicting dates and basically admitted he was way too optimistic about how long people would keep throwing hundreds of billions of dollars at a loss-making product that almost nobody is willing to pay for unsubsidised.

Given that it's the same guy who fronts that C4 "documentary" about whether ADHD is all made up, and has a regular column in the Mail, it's not surprising at all. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Pem...
Daily Mail headline - Dr Max Pemberton: I was diagnosed with ADHD even though I knew I didn't have it. I swallowed the same drug thousands of children take every day... And this was the terrifying effect it had on me. We're getting everything so wrong

Surprisingly honest of them to show how even brief usage of Gemini degrades your faculties to the point that you have to ask it for help with whether or not to share a document with someone.

Ironically this is *also* what learning IT/computer engineering is about. The space moves so quickly that knowledge is transient, you have to understand the underpinnings in order to keep up. I'm already seeing people I work with lose that ability due to reliance on AI tools to think for them.

My concern really was for the smaller platforms that can't just chuck billions into fines. The OSA notably didn't have any carve-out for small/non-profit/hobbyist platforms and hit them all equally with the age requirements. This will start with big platforms, but will likely expand over time
100
Adam @spad.uk · 16/06/2026
You may be right and the bigger platforms at least just view it as a cost of doing business (keeping users hooked on their platform), but that means there's a good chance they don't really make any meaningful changes. It's not like the govt is going to impose actual penalties beyond piddly fines

Adam @spad.uk · 16/06/2026
Sure but that's different, if you *know* what's going into a feed because it's human-curated that's obviously much safer than providing people with user-generated content. I'm not talking about e.g. Amazon trying to flog you another TV after you buy a TV.

Adam @spad.uk · 16/06/2026
Right but if you're legally liable for anything you publish in an algorithmic recommendation feed, you're not going to take the risk of having one.

5 is a really terrible idea. 2 is a bit silly and very annoying, but not actively harmful. The rest are fairly sensible, though I have concerns that 4 would kill all kinds of discovery/recommendation features that *aren't* brain-melting addiction loops. And as always, what counts as social media?

For the love of god stop trying to ban kids from social media and actually regulate social media. It's such a pathetic cop-out that fails to address the myriad problems sites like X and Facebook are causing while cloaking it in "but we're protecting the children". Bollocks you are.

Also fair, they show you all the stuff but don't elaborate on *how* any of it can be used. It's been done better - albeit with worse aesthetics - elsewhere.

People may not ultimately care that some data broker has enough info to track your commute and knows everyone you associate with and where you hang out in the evenings, but it's probably good to make them aware it's happening.

The information isn't the issue per se, like you say a lot of the time you're logged in anyway or just aren't bothered. The bigger issue is the fingerprinting and cross-site tracking it allows that enables really quite scary levels of profiling of things like where you travel and who you know

I mean also because a bunch of his party's candidates for local council made anti-Semitic social media posts in the wake of a series of attacks on Jewish people in recent weeks. It's overblown by the largely right-wing press, but it's not just "because he criticizes Israel".
