The Artemis II crew is currently about 180,000 miles (290,000 km) from Earth. At that distance, the Earth appears to be about the same size as a ping pong ball held at arm’s length, and it’s continuing to shrink in their window. I’m not sure any amount of training can prepare you for that sight.

Can engineers play too? I was captivated by the Apollo 11 mission as a six year-old. It sparked a lifelong fascination with space that led me to aerospace engineering, with emphasis on astrodynamics. Today I do launch vehicle GN&C at NASA and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

I’m genuinely an expert in launch vehicle guidance, navigation, and control, having spent 38 years in the field. I’m trained and competent in general aerospace engineering, in particular in astrodynamics. I’m treated by my coworkers as an expert in statistics though I’m barely adequate at it.
