Some Gen-Z'er at Japan's Hard-Off used hardware store saw their manager testing a game on this Sanyo #MSX, and posted this message saying they got a new "game console" they'd "never seen before" in store. After various comments explaining "MSX" and "Sanyo", they posted an apology 😂

My stay in Japan keeps getting delayed. In 2025 it was due to surgery, in 2026 I was busy getting ready, had urgent plumbing problems in my house, and various other things. Having canceled / not planned various events at home, I was finally ready to go, and then… I'm told to postpone to SPRING 2027…

My first experience with a Kuji (merchandise lottery) was at a booth like the one in the 3rd photo. I don't remember where, but I noticed a line in front of a store and figured I'd better get in it. Bought a few tickets, hadn't fully figured out what was going on yet, but won some good prizes!

The ASCII #MSX #BASIC #compiler is often named wrong in English. It's not Kun-BASIC or Turbo-BASIC, but BASIC'n, as apparent on cover of its associated manga. That name is also embedded in the ROM of the MSX2+ edition. Another somewhat valid name is XBASIC, which was its codename during development.

Norakomi and Wolf released a video of the symponic and medieval soundtrack of MSX Legends, the first #MSX game using MS² ~ MoonSound Music Studio's full 42-channel capability. The video explains strategies for optimizing the sample RAM usage, but actually it ignores several MS² features. (1/2)

MSX Association reports that recently unearthed documents suggest that the number of #MSX machines sold worldwide is around 6 million! This is 50% higher than the commonly cited number of 4 million that was once published in MSX Magazine.

Note that nobody is forced to make 42 channel music. MS² is capable of making #MSX music with any number of channels and these can be freely added, changed, or removed while editing. MS² is fully dynamic. Here's a simple but lovely 6-channel Konami Snatcher arrangement I made in MS² v0.90:

#MSX related ISA overview. The count for Z80A doesn't include undocumented opcodes. R800 and Z280 made most of them official. Z180 doesn't have any, until Z380 (but they forgot some). R800 has 11 opcodes from Z280. Coincidentally, Mo80 shares 9 more with Z280 and 8 with Z380, but it's not related.

The Z380 is often called a 32-bit CPU, but honestly that's a very generous statement. It can only do arithmetic in 16-bit. It does do some pointer math in 32-bit, but you can't for example simply compare two 32-bit pointers. I might write a critical analysis of it sometime.
