The world's leading AI firms say the technology is careening out of control and could cause a global catastrophe. A sundowning octogenarian president who uses AI to post images of himself looking like Rambo says this is a Chinese hoax. For busy technologists, it can be hard to know who to trust.

Yesterday, the larger of my cats decided it would be a good idea to basically bully me by meowing loudly and biting my arm, hand, elbow and nose until I relented and gave her some treats. After that she decided to ignore me and sleep for the rest of the day. Seriously, cats are absolute bastards 😂

There's rather a lot of people that care about fairness in sports and are not rabid right-wingers laser focused on the Trans issue. We do actually care aboutseeing equal competition in some form. There's a ton of books and articles written on the subject.

We can conclude that yes, it did have to be this way, because there’s very little standing between the nastiest right wing warmongers, authoritarians and crooks except a bunch of libs who agree with about 75% of their ideas, are terrified of looking like commies and rarely do anything to impede them

Ive been thinking the same thing, and kind of hesitant to say it out loud because we're already a group considered to be luddites and technophobes, when its really our sense that students absolutely must train their own minds to read primary sources, and think/write with primary+secondary sources.

Andy Burnham has been warned he risks igniting a trade war with President Trump by pushing ahead with plans to impose sanctions on Israeli settlements
The prime minister was told by Labour MPs that Britain could face retaliation from the White House for imposing a trade ban over plans for 1,200 settler homes in the West Bank
The US last month criticised Ireland for passing similar legislation, warning of the "unintended consequences" for hundreds of businesses and calling the move "unhelpful"
Trump has also threatened a full trade embargo with Spain, which last year banned goods being imported from Israeli settlements, amid a wider row over the country's decision not to let the US use its military bases for operations in Iran

bloomberg has a fun article today arguing that the Cybertruck is the biggest flop in automotive history. it includes this glorious graph.
A graph showing how the edsel and Cybertruck both performed based on their sales target and actual year one and year two sales. The edsel was expected to sell 200k units in its first year. It sold slightly over 50k, and less than 50k the next year

The Cybertruck had a sales.target of 250k in its first year. They sold around 40k, the next year they sold about half as many.

TLDR the normative idea of ‘good politics’ that Peston et al endorse is tautological Centrism—“what most people will like is the centre, because the centre is what most people will like”—and they refuse to recognise that it is precisely this politics, both the project and product, that people hate.

British politics—both the analysis of its chronic dysfunction and the dysfunction itself—becomes much more legible if you remember that every time a prominent pundit uses a phrase like ‘across the political spectrum’, what they actually mean is ‘among my mates’.

I want to reiterate the luminosity that the giant stupid space mirror will create here on Earth is *dimmer than a candle held at arms length.* That's a) actually going to be incredibly disruptive at night for humans with our logarithmic optical sensors, and b) completely useless on solar panels.
