Oh, so not sad!

I am thinking to use mine as a donation for a Democratic or DFL candidate. I need to start giving this more thought, and quickly! (So far no bribes this year.)

mistake. That was Gerald Ford. I am not feeling more conservative in the least. In fact the DSA is sounding more and more attractive, rather than remaining a progressive who votes Democratic.

My mother had been a Republiconned all of her voting life, and then Ronald Reagan, as president, started destroying the social safety net. She switched to the DFL and was a flaming liberal for the rest of her life. I, being well into my retirement, have only voted for one republicon, and that was a

As someone with no sense of humor, don't blame me for taking such comments as serious attempts at statements of fact, when in fact they aren't meant to be. How do you expect newbies filter bs from fact?

And I was just clarifying that it is a file. We agree that Windows offers the same levels of complexity as Linux, just different in the details - which can be significant?

Doesn't make the registry not a file. You can read parts of an .ods or .odt file with a text editor, but much of it may be garbage. Every so often I will open a file and see garbage, because it is more than a text file. Different OSs, different ways of doing things.

to access other machines and areas in the network that he wasn't authorized to access. When I later worked for the US Govt our computers were locked down Windows machines. I once asked one of the Linux Team why we couldn't use Linux. The simple answer was training (and support).

When I did a stint of MS tech support many years ago, we were using locked down Windows machines. One of the people that had been hired at the same time and gone through training with me was fired and walked out of the building about a week after we started answering the phones. He had been trying

If you had people to provide the training and provide tech support I would be inclined toward one of the locked down immutable distros. They could do the things that people were trained and equipped to do, and it would be really hard for them to mess things up, either by accident or on purpose.

Given that the distros that I run require rebooting after certain security, system, or other updates to take effect, I don't see how anyone can have extreme uptime numbers, unless of course they have a standalone machine that is not updated and does not interact with the Internet or other potential

Quite a few years ago I couldn't access my email. I called my email provider and they looked into it. I don't recall how I learned (maybe they called me and told me that) they had reconfigured something and EMAILED me my new password.

Conscription gives people a reason to care about how and where their government is acting overseas, and care about undeclared wars and "police actions" especially if their immediate family members have been drafted and may be part of the action. Right now, do people care? Not so much in the US.

Someone on bsky once asked something. I did a quick internet search and found 10 or more articles addressing the problem. I posted the search string and that there were a bunch of hits. The person asked which one was best. I said it was up to him to read them, not me. He blocked me.

I asked one person that I had been helping for months 'why she didn't do the internet searches that I showed her EVERY time I helped her' and she replied that 'she didn't have to because she knew I/we would do it for her'. You see the same thing on bluesky. People criticize posting how to search.

Sp2Guzzi @sp2guzzi.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
You might be surprised at how resistant people are to searching on the internet for information. I do a lot of vol tech support for Windows and Android (no one uses Linux) and the first thing I do is walk them through using the internet to find the answer to their (usually very simple) questions.

A fine nib and quick drying ink and you would have a difficult time smearing. At least that has been my left-handed experience. I favour broad nibs so I just write slower.

I just threw this together for those who aren't hooked on fountain pens and thinking of giving them a try, wondering what to do. Cheers!

These are rough calculations - no tax & shipping. And minimizing the waste of empty disposables. Another really neat thing about refillable pens is the incredible variety of colors, sheening inks, etc, that are not available with disposables. I am sure you are aware of this.

Sp2Guzzi @sp2guzzi.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Repurpose a used syringe and needle, or buy an ink syringe for $2.50 to refill the cartridges - don't toss them! Buy a 30 ml bottle of ink for $4 - now have 15 2ml refills equal to 15 disposables (@ $45) Or buy an 88 ml bottle of ink for $19 and have 44 two ml refills ($66 worth of disposables)

Sp2Guzzi @sp2guzzi.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Interesting - it turns out there are many disposables available. A good idea if one wants to see if they would like using a fountain pen - but not for the long haul. Disposables - $3 for 2 ml of ink. Inexpensive cartridge pen - $4.25 @ 1.8 ml of ink Replacement cartridges - $2.90 for 1.8 ml ink

A disposable fountain pen? I can't say I have encountered such a pen - though no doubt someone has made one, somehow, somewhere. I suppose one might consider the super cheap pens more or less disposable, though one I got for under $10 still has a (refillable) throw away cartridge.

Dual booting Windows 11 and Linux? It actually depends on the distro. Some people will claim that it doesn't work. My experience is that it works and to date Windows has never whacked the dual-boot. Mint similar distros work well as dual-boot. The setup can be confusing, so you absolutely need to

There are ways to change the DE. I have never done so without a clean install, but the Internet says it can be done. I am thinking of rebasing Silverblue to KDE, but my system is a dual boot w/ Win 11, so my enthusiasm is 'tempered'!

That is my issue as well. I know I was tinkering with Linux back around 2000, if not before. but that is a tad too vague for my taste. I do know my first distro that I tried to use was Red Hat. But something didn't work right (sound?), so I moved on to something else, and that worked. But which one?

I became a believer in the draft as the American population came to not give a crap about what the USG and the US military was doing in various parts of the world.

Sp2Guzzi @sp2guzzi.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I would argue that mandatory national service IN THE MILITARY would get the average citizen interested in what the USG was doing in various parts of the world, because their immediate family might be drafted and sent there. I was against the draft in the 1960s - I volunteered for the USMC.
