Penguin Random House just printed new copies of THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL by Anne Frank and raised the price 10%. This is such a small thing. Yet this book is so vital at this moment, and corporations are choosing profit over access. This is one of the reasons my store is on strike.

Since E. B. White published Charlotte’s Web in 1952, there have been various attempts to ride its coattails without permission. The latest is the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid in Charlotte, NC.

The spider in Charlotte’s Web devoted her life to securing Wilbur’s freedom. “By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a little,” she says. “Heaven knows anyone’s life can stand a little of that.”

On the subject of freedom versus fascism, White wrote, “The least a man can do at such a time is to declare himself and tell where he stands.” He believed in the rule of law and due process. He espoused supranational cooperation. He certainly didn’t believe in masked men, in unmarked cars, raiding people’s homes and workplaces without IDs or summons. He didn’t condone fearmongering. “I am a member of a party of one, and I live in an age of fear,” he wrote in 1947. “I think security in critical times takes care of itself if the people and the institutions take care of themselves. First in line is the press.”

Personally, I think it’s important to know when to speak up, to expose the lies or misperceptions (the rule of law still applies in Sanctuary Cities, by the way), and when to deny the limelight that feeds the cruelty.

I am certain that someone thought this was particularly witty when they came up with the name, but it's honestly one of the more offensive possibilities these hateful authoritarians could have used.
Even on its face, using the name of a beloved children's book as the name of your anti-immigrant, mass-arrest operation is appalling.
But, to use a book authored by E.B. White as your name is an offense to history. White was a leading voice for American democracy and freedom and against fascism and tyranny.
Abusing his life's work like this cannot stand without a response.
