sam @soulware.us · 27/09/2026it's hard for me to think of 9 games that shaped me because i feel like every third game is still shaping me but I will try soon 011
sam @soulware.us · 19/09/2026I'll miss the ease of installing software in Arch, but 2 major AUR attacks in the last few months have made me wary. I avoided one of them only because I hadn't updated my computer in a while! 000
sam @soulware.us · 19/09/2026Installed bazzite last night because lightdm decided to stop working completely randomly and I had been sitting on an installer USB anyhow, so no more arch. Anyways it went pretty smooth besides my browser font being this for a little while 120

sam @soulware.us · 15/09/2026It’s like the Void Stranger of platformers (Disclaimer: I haven’t played very much Void Stranger. This is based on how people talk about it, with hushed tones and a light in their eyes) 010
sam @soulware.us · 15/09/2026Playing my landmark precision and secrets platformer in my head and it’s good. Mainly because it expands outwards. 110

sam @soulware.us · 06/09/2026broke: playtesting your game woke: not playtesting your game bespoke: playtesting your game in your dream 060
sam @soulware.us · 03/09/2026i used to throw on playlists from youtube of jungle/dnb from n64/ps1 games, some of which i haven't played. some standouts were The New Tetris and Bomberman 64. the mixes from ryland kurshenoff have good standalone songs -> potentially good standalone albums if you're into this sort of music 120
sam @soulware.us · 03/09/2026i think bugs probably don't want to be indoors where they might lack many of their basic needs so i think the guided return to the outdoors might be a kindness? ie wandering indoors might be a death trap anyhow 010
sam @soulware.us · 03/09/2026maybe catching a bug is also a sort of violence (i am establishing space as my own) but there is more of a relationship (i need to have the bug come onto a flat surface, understanding its behavior, and then place the cup over it ever so briefly, and release it outdoors) 110
sam @soulware.us · 03/09/2026i grew up doing this and at some point i stopped interacting with bugs as much? or maybe grew more apathetic... im not sure. but the instinct to just hit the bug today rose up... where did i learn it? and with it a sense of Wrongness, that it was not me 110
sam @soulware.us · 24/08/2026there’s something weird with lobsters where people have a poor intuition for when something (code, prose) is ai generated. a number of times i’ve turned my nose up at some article and the comments seem ignorant to the fact that it’s entirely llm written 160

sam @soulware.us · 21/08/2026honestly the max_enemies_per_wave might've not been necessary, since i think i could've worked out probabilistically what the timer should've been given that a single enemy spawned per timer going off. But it is an easier knob to tune 110
sam @soulware.us · 21/08/2026oh yeah, having stuff remain slow seems super important for maintaining an interesting challenge. you can definitely feel it in your game too. for my ramping i had data specifying after N seconds what the min/max spawn time should be, and how many enemies should appear at most 111
sam @soulware.us · 21/08/2026with my game i sort of observed that clusters emerge out of just leaning into the randomness (i used a rebalanced version of the "angel dances" algorithm). For ramping I just tweaked the timer range. Granted my game also benefits from having more of a slurry... i think 110
sam @soulware.us · 21/08/2026You won't often run into this sort of problem though. In many cases, Godot feels either like a good proving ground for a game, or enough to get the whole game working. 010
sam @soulware.us · 21/08/2026to get more specific about this, you certainly can run into pathologically slow situations in Godot, and it's frustrating when it happens. But it is an approachable problem, thanks to the engine being open and profile-able, vs. what happens with lots of other software 120
sam @soulware.us · 16/08/2026its funny that “no magic numbers” is a suggested rule of programming because, the numbers, they are all magic 020
sam @soulware.us · 10/08/2026Im having a big problem where i want to change my discord profile picture because its like a random zelda stock image i chose a decade ago but also i am really attached to the abstract presentation of the profile picture. when i switch it i get devastated and forget who i am 130

sam @soulware.us · 28/07/2026anyways i like dancers a lot! i am bad at it right now but played it more today 010
sam @soulware.us · 28/07/2026compared to WASP NEST and angel dances you are pretty distinct from the things you avoid... and the movement even suggests that (angel is nearly perpendicular to the sparks, in WASP NEST you are slow and orthogonal vs. fast and curving wasps) 110
sam @soulware.us · 28/07/2026a cool thing about this game especially looking at the evolution of "avoiders" and "treaters" is that you assume a similar form to the things that you have to avoid... i felt this pretty heavily with minnow (how harmonious/discordant i was vs. other fish) and here it's even stronger 150
sam @soulware.us · 27/07/2026The gmtk theme was "COUNT DOWN" and I was thinking about deadlines here, whether or not you do good work, there is a sense of relief that comes with the deadline passing, and knowing your time for the task is over. 010
sam @soulware.us · 27/07/2026With more time/art i wanted to do something like pizza tower's ending screens - give you a sort of satisfying "ending" even if you just play the game twice, or find it too hard, etc. It's interesting to think about how to make a game satisfying even if you lose 120
sam @soulware.us · 27/07/2026for my latest game i wanted to target having 2-3 minutes of very dense gameplay, and then you could put the game down after that if you wanted. I achieved this but it's a weird feeling, since I enjoy the game a lot but i feel exhausted after a play session 140
sam @soulware.us · 26/07/2026i saw this in my feed last night while i was working on the jam, looking forward to playing it today. my game is more action but i used a similar idea re: fading timers, i like how it's done here a lot 000
sam @soulware.us · 26/07/2026"The guests are outside so you have to cook really fast" - new game for gmtk jam! action cooking game where you have to keep track of all the timers you have going! soulware.itch.io/tgao #gmtk 063
sam @soulware.us · 26/07/2026i do think allowing bonus score might solve for that a little bit though (if you want more points you need to play differently than just for completion) 110
sam @soulware.us · 26/07/2026i have more stage-hazard type ideas, but between time crunch + seeing that there is enough difficulty in the base game i just left things as is. i want to be very careful about adding new elements as well- thinking about things that require ppl to switch tactics up a couple times per session 130
sam @soulware.us · 26/07/2026nice score!!! and im glad to hear you like it. at the last minute i changed the win flow from being "game ends when you get 20 foods" to be "game goes for 3 minutes no matter what", so im glad that there's more incentive to push score as a result 110
sam @soulware.us · 26/07/2026ah wish i'd seen this sooner! i fell asleep pretty late bc of jam work, i've just uploaded what i think is my final jam build. But here's the link, i'd still love to hear feedback since i have a bunch of things i didn't have time to expand on and i'll prob work on postjam soulware.itch.io/tgaosoulware.itch.ioThe guests are outside so you have to cook really fast by soulwareN-back action cooking game 120
