Trump will continue to cut grants, no matter the value of the program. Why? Because he is wed to his crazy plan to fund the USG entirely with tariffs in lieu of income taxes. He's been told the math doesn't work, so he's radically slashing the US budget wherever he thinks he can get away with it.

It is a mistake to assume that Trump ever has the national interest in mind. The only way to make sense of Trump's actions is to ask: "What's in it for Trump personally?" "How will this enrich him?" "How will it enhance his power, punish his enemies, garner praise and adulation for himself, etc.?"

Recently on Fox, Trump reiterated that tariffs could replace income taxes. While it's unlikely tariffs could raise enough revenue to run the USG, Trump is serious. I expect tariffs to be permanent or even increased over current levels, and related USG cost-cutting to be more extreme. #Tariffs

Trump's desire to house US citizen prisoners in El Salvador is not unrelated to his goal of replacing income taxes with tariffs. No matter the justification, it's all about the money for Trump. It costs half as much to keep prisoners in CECOT as in US Federal Prisons. #Tariffs #Elsalvadorprisons

Trump's statements/Doge actions show he hopes to end Fed Income Tax by instituting broad permanent tariffs, downsizing gov't agencies, ending gov't grants/contracts, selling gov't properties, privatizing Soc Sec, Medicare, etc., and selling "Gold Card" visas to rich immigrants. #Incometax #Tariffs
