My thoughts on this have only intensified after reading the KH1 and CoM novels for the first time. Just based on how Namine and Kairi are treated by Repliku and Riku respectively and Nomura interview discussing the latter's motivations in KH1 I just can't go "awww" at any KH1 moment w/ them lol

Prefacing this by saying I do think Riku and Kairi are good friends that care for each other (or at least that's what I think the story wants me to think) but I don't agree with their KH1 depictions of them as this cute duo/potential couple. Riku treats her like garbage in KH1 and like a trophy

It's sad that a majority of Kairi discussion is ship wars and "potential" and not what she's already demonstrated in the story. Where's the speculation about her background in Radiant Garden, her doubts about whether she can grow alongside her close friends, her pure beliefs and ideals. It's barren.

I'm of the opinion that Kairi could and absolutely should be treated better in the Kingdom Hearts story, and as of right now I don't feel very strongly for her as I want to. However I do want people who don't care for her to be able to properly explain the role she plays without shipping goggles.
