It 's hard to take a selfie without thumbs 😝 Sometimes our wildlife cameras only catch glimpses of animals passing by. However, these make for some funny moments that get our staff laughing as they sort through hours of footage!

Forests are awe-inspiring living systems; communities of trees and the beings who call forests home. On this International Day of Forests, we’re celebrating the protection of many of our forests in Sonoma County and the clean water, wildlife habitat, and climate resilience they create.

Today the Earth reaches that quiet turning point when day and night stand nearly in balance. Light lingers a little longer on the hills. The fields and hillsides are beginning their quiet display, and the bright colors of wildflowers are a reminder the turning of the seasons is once again in motion.

These river otters were recorded on one of the 30+ wildlife cameras placed along Hwy 12. If it wasn’t for the cameras, we might not have known this could be a play area. This type of data will help us identify infrastructural improvements for wildlife connectivity and traffic safety along Hwy 12.

In Sonoma County, actions like restoring waterways, returning good fire to the land, and protecting open space help buffer climate impacts while supporting biodiversity and community wellbeing. These approaches are examples of nature-based solutions, which works with nature, not against it.

@baynature.org’s latest issue highlights 4 restoration sites around the Bay Area including our Sears Point property! For over 120 years, dikes held back the tides for farmland and ranches. Since the levee was broken in 2015, nature has reclaimed the land, once again making it a tidal marsh.

How do our local jackrabbits survive cold winters if they don't hibernate? This Black-tailed Jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) seeks shelter in brush or snowdrifts, grows a thicker coat, and shifts its diet to hardy bark and twigs.

Where do butterflies and other insects go when it gets cold? Many will migrate, hibernate, or enter a state of suspended development called diapause. Volunteer John Hibbard visited Laufenburg Ranch at the end of Nov. for probably the last time until spring, but was still able to find a few insects.

Why is it exciting to find a Northwestern Pond Turtle in the wild? 🐢As an indicator species, the tell us how healthy their watery ecosystems are. Due to habitat loss, poor water quality, and the introduction of predators, the more we find in our waterways the healthier the ecosystem is.
