It is now the 8th anniversary of Mania so time to dig up some Sonic trivia... This year, it's Kanga Clanga! (aka the Kangus). This lovable robo-roo originally lived in the outback but now entertains us all in Pinball Carnival Zone!

Kanga Clanga Badnik from Sonic Superstars. He is cute and orange, with a lovable blank eyed expression.

Kanga Clanga Badnik, as it appears in a 2.5D prototype Evening Star worked on after Sonic Mania. It is balancing on its tail and kicking forward with its springy roo feet! Sonic is knocked to the left with significant kinetic force.

A wider shot of Kanga Clanga hopping in pursuit of Sonic in the outback.

I've been doing more #SXSG shader reverse engineering, reached the shaders that blend texture sets now. One of them, DirectionBlend_dpnndpn (used in kingdom valley), has a bug that incorrectly applies the third normal map. I checked out how it looks when fixed, and it does make a difference!

A close up shot of the cliff side in kingdom valley. It shows the cliff material with the vanilla shader implementation, which incorrectly displays the grass' normals

A close up shot of the cliff side in kingdom valley. It shows the cliff material a modded shader implementation that fixes the incorrect grass normals

A shot of kingdom valley, with the camera backed away from the cliff to see more. This shows the vanilla shader implementation with the bug.

Been a while since I posted a progress update on Marathon Recompiled, so here's where we're at! We have working builds for Linux and macOS, and I'm working on sorting out the remaining blockers for Windows. Bugs in game, and singleplayer 3D not rendering properly yet but stay tuned...

Yeah the scam seems to be that like one of your followers suddenly messages you about how your account tried to fraud them and that they sent a report. This leads down this chain of getting in touch with some asshole on discord who acts like bluesky support but is just there to steal info

Still think about this sometimes--a prototype design for NiGHTS' JoD appearance. Seems NiGHTS was going to have a feather motif similar to Reala's, and a bunch of other little design elements as well! A bit cluttered, but still fun to look back on :D

I can very well see that happening, low effort and investment, all platforms covered with one sku. There's also that SEGA account thing, my guess is that you will unlock dlc in new games by playing retro games in cloud, it all comes together. I expect an announcement at sgf or close

Sonikko06 @sonikko06.bsky.social · 30/05/2025

I think all of this is just preliminary work for an eventual subscription/cloud service. They recently rehired Langley to post legacy content on social media afaik, they're just waiting to start promotion for the new retro brand

I strongly believe that if that weren't the case, most people I know would not be buying games now that they have an income. Piracy is a gateway to becoming an actual audience, they should see it as an investment instead of a problem

Turns out Ami Shibata was a guest character designer in Burning Rangers and can be rescued in the game

Ami Shibata’s letter upon being rescued in Burning Rangers: “I’m a guest character designer for the game, and Naka-san is a good friend of mine. I usually write comics for the Japanese market, and one of them has him as the main character.
There is only one thing I hate in this world - deadlines!”

It looks like a nice initiative and the packaging is actually cool, I'm just concerned about the definition of artful titles, I don't really like the notion that narrative-driven titles and stuff like Gris and Journey are the closest games have ever been to art
