You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

There will be sooo many holes in the records, especially with so much happening on digital media. So much context will be missing. What is miette? Why is a breadcrumb being kicked like a ball game? Was this really an incarcerable offense?

Maybe! The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor, which featured a giant snake & a mysteriously disappearing island, was a bestseller back in his day…

I love the name Shesheshen - we have one in my museum! Or almost (one „h“ missing). This is Sesheshen, priest of Selket!
A seated Egyptian statue of dark stone. It is a man wearing a kilt & with a naked torso. One hand is flat on his lap, the other curled in a fist. He is wearing a shoulder-length wig. His seat is covered in horizontal lines of hieroglyphs.

Hi #Egyptology peeps! Anyone know the logic behind translating „mfk3t“ as „Turquoise“? Is Hathor Lady of Turquoise bc it was briefly popular (when?!? Early Dyn or something?) or bc Some Guy™️ in the 19th c. arbitrarily decided mfk3t was turquoise & not, IDK, malachite or something actually common.

Next day was Grasse, where we did 3 museums in a race against the parking meter. First up, the Musée d‘Art et d‘Histoire where I found my favourite type of artefact: highly-specialised food tools! Featured: sugar crusher, chickpea mill, apple baking tray & vase tower for keeping table grapes fresh.

Oh, FFS. US online voter registration basically just gives me something to print out and mail. You know what France did? Let me vote from the comfort of my computer. Two-tier verification on each step through email & phone #, but I didn’t have to pay however much in postage to vote.

Apparently lending out extraneous family members was fairly common, especially since adoption laws were weird. So if you didn‘t have a direct male heir, bringing up the extra boy/grandson/2nd cousin once removed and making him heir by testament was an approved option.

L‘intention doit bien compter pour quelque chose - a priori, d‘un point de vue égyptologique, une oie, un bélier, un faucon ou même un coléoptère peuvent être un symbole religieux…

Next day was another medieval village, Mougins, which has been taken over by artists! Tiny little galleries & weird little guy statues everywhere. + an old communal oven - rather than an oven in each home (lots of fuel), you‘d subscribe to the communal oven & bring your loaves over on baking day.
A stone public fountain, very low and gabled with a red tiled backsplah. Beside it, a smaller stone basin below a hitching ring for a donkey or dog.A sloping street with a peach-coloured house next to a stone house. In the foreground, a single garden table and chair - even if you don’t have a front lawn, you can make an outdoor space for yourself.Inside a communal baking oven. Stone walls hung with old photographs of the village. On the left wall, the entrance to the oven.Bronze statue of a naked man standing bent at the waist with a paper „dunce‘s cap“ on his head.

We also went to the little town of Vallebonne. Like many towns in the area, it was founded as a workman‘s village to attract farmers to work monastery lands. Unlike many of the hilltop villages in the area, it was built on a grid system! (Bonus cat, who was chilling in front of a little art gallery)
A stone house with szairs leading to a small portico with a profusion of red flowers. Before it. A small urn-like fountain and a big bathtub-like drinking trough.A straight cobblestone street, somewhat convex to allow water to drain, flanked by stone houses with shutters snd flowers and plants next to the doors. In the distance, one house in white with green shutters spans the street, with an arch to let people pass under. In front of a stall, a canvas on an easel with a view in bright paint of a seaside city with two tall yellow towers among the smaller houses and boats moored in the foreground. On the white table the easel rests on, a black cat is sleeping soundly.

Illusion box where my husband - 6 foot 2, wearing black cargo shorts, black t-shirt abd an australian hat - looks tiny beside me - 5 foot 2, blue straw hat and floral dress.

Alas, we don’t know who sent it or to whom, but the recipient is invited to come celebrate the birthday of the sender‘s son, Sarapion, in the Fayum. It also asks the recipient to greet various family members & to send goods to the sender. It was sent from Alexandria.

Back from holidays to see family in southern France. @seananmcguire.bsky.social : on our first day we found a praying mantis molt on the side of the road. A little over a week later, the real thing was chilling on the wall of my cousin‘s house! More posts to come… though not of mantises.
On a brown background, the slightly translucent white exoskeleton molt of a praying mantis. On a gray wall, a green praying mantis.
