I urge everyone to see NAZA, to see what our tax dollars are paying for. The whole movie is gutting but the closing scene broke me. My mom’s name is Salma so you can imagine how I imagined the Palestinian man being my dad. Bless the Drafthouse and the AFS Cinema for showing such important films.

I’ve known Jamaica is one of the worst countries for gay people for decades but had never read about what it was like to be gay there. I found it a tough read. Graphic depictions about really horrific violence against homosexuals. But it was so well-written as you would expect from Marlon James.

Finished listening to American Scoundrel: Roy Cohn’s Dark Journey from Joe McCarthy to Donald Trump by Kai Bird, author of American Prometheus about Oppenheimer, on my way back from San Antonio this afternoon (new permanent resident—yay!). What a bad seed. Borrowed from the Austin Public Library.

No better way to spend a fall evening in Austin than seeing Kacey Musgraves live. I just closed my eyes for big chunks just to hear the crowd sing and cheer.

The Washington Sun reported last week that the White House has instructed the Justice Department to hold off on attacking abortion until after the midterms. After that, they’ve promised anti-abortion leaders, “the gloves will be off.” They are just getting started. But here’s the thing: so are we.

Very much loved reading The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai. First found out about it because it made Obama’s list of recommended books last year. Then my friend, Oliver, told me loved it. Then my friend, Janna, told me she couldn’t put it down. I bought it on my Kobo.

I never did and had an awesome time in college. Of course, rape doesn’t just happen at frat parties. But as this philosophy professor at Cornell says, frat culture is rape culture. That was true twenty five years ago, and sadly, is still true today.

Roma is a senior and applying to colleges. She follows the news as much as her anxiety allows and texted me today, saying the gang rape at Cornell was really scaring her when it comes to going to college. I offered advice and comfort, and one of the things I told her was never to go to a frat party.

To the people complaining these sex abuse cases have created a world where men now have to think 10 times before they touch a woman. Yes, that's the point. It's called consent. Welcome to human decency.

I’ve been wanting to read Fierce Attachments, a mother/daughter memoir, by Vivian Gornick since I read that the New York Times Book Review declared it the best memoir of the last 50 years in 2019 and said it sparked the modern memoir boom.
