Just re-injured my fucked up toe. Must deal with it silently, as the baby is sleeping.

Posting these here first before auction sites just in case someone's interested. Two fountain pens that are great but I just don't use. A Platinum 3776 Gathered (M) and a Sailor Pro Gear (F). They deserve a home where they'll actually be used. DM if interested. Shares appreciated

Ok, time to get serious about clearing things out. This Mamiya 6 is a lot of fun. Let's call it USD $125, shipping included anywhere in the world. It's always worked great for me, but sold as-is given the age. Happy to answer any questions.

This morning when the earthquake hit, I was coming out of a VERY deep sleep and wasn't grasping reality well. Ended up grabbing the cat and trying to protect him, my brain having mistaken him for the baby. The cat was more alarmed by this than by the quake. At least the impulse was in right place...

The cat hasn't warmed up to the baby yet, but is no longer spooked by her. This is progress.

We used to do this thing we called "The Saturday Sandwich," which was me making up some rad sandwich to enjoy for lunch on a Saturday. Today, we resumed the tradition with ham on french bread with guacamole, sprouts, pickled onions, roasted red peppers, and mayo. It was damned good.

Finally got the baby to sleep. She looked super peaceful and cute, so I took a picture. Camera sound woke her up.

I just watched a large wasp kill a big butterfly, remove the wings, then fly off with the body. Sometimes nature is totally metal, even on a small scale.

Pretty hard to beat this setup. F2 Photomic, 35mm Nikkor-O, soft release, yellow filter, proper hood, and a Diagnl Ninja strap (which I invented, btw). 400 ISO B&W film pushed to EI 1,600. The diary camera.

I am fully aware that it's programmed into me to think so, but still: MY BABY IS IMPOSSIBLY CUTE AND I CANNOT HANDLE IT She's the most wonderful thing I've ever seen. It's just ridiculous.

I might not have the same level of fundamental distrust of cops on Japan as I did in the USA, but I still don't interact with them unless it's absolutely necessary, and neither should you. When there is fundamentally an absolute and corruptible power imbalance, you stay away from it.

Made two mistakes. One, opened Facebook. Two, clicked on a Japan-related post.
foreign residents shouldn't be entitled to the same social benefits as citizens, unless they've lived there all their lives. Even if they pay taxes, they haven't contributed to the Japanese society since the beginning of their lives, so they shouldn't have the right to the same social benefits as someone who has lived in Japan all of their life.

Put on a new tire to replace the one that failed. Went with another Panaracer Closer Plus, as the failure of the last one was a matter of my own negligence. Still a great tire. Also trying out some combo SPD/flat pedals, so the bike is now shoe-agnostic.

Given both the current warm, sunny weather, and the return to multiple days of rain starting late tonight, naturally I’m washing ALL of the laundry. Clothes, towels, sheets, etc. EVERYTHING.

Anyone considering Preply for online lessons should know they take a 100% commission on initial trial lessons. The instructor gets nothing. Zero. Zilch. That's just wage theft.

David is such a common name, I suppose it shouldn't surprise me that there are multiple artists I love who have the same name as me, but it's still nice. It takes away from the genericity of it all. Between Rakoff and Sedaris alone, I am instilled with a sense of loyalty to the name.

I need more people I can just gush about the baby to. I know I've got the new-dad enthusiasm, and that's fine, but it's got nowhere to go, and the cat is tired of hearing about it. She's absolutely perfect and impossibly cute. How the hell am I supposed to do this without an echo chamber

Realized today I've had this bike about 11 years, which means I've had it way longer than any other bike in my life. It's been my bike almost as long as I've been in Japan. Steel frame, fixed gear, and as much fun a decade later as it ever was.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

Seriously though this rain is getting ridiculous. Compared to other places right now, it's not even that bad in Saitama, but it's still been unreasonably wet for entirely too long. This is more rain than rainy season.

You ever rebel against yourself? Because I didn't catch on at first, but I've been doing it recently. I write a lot, and I mostly write with fountain pens because they're comfortable and nice. I just like them. For the last month, at least 75% of everything has been written with a Bic Cristal.
