i'm not redoing all the sprites bc that would be insane, but going back to slarpg sprites from years ago does make me ask "what the fuck did i think the significance of this cluster of pixels was," which can make them hard to pose or animate. hence why my next game's sprites have simpler shading lol

lemme tell ya. i will be so happy to work on a game where i can just apply lighting effects to sprites in-engine rather than needing to manually make dark/nighttime/sunset/etc. variants of sprite sheets as i do for rpg maker

when mm9 dropped in 2008 we were just coming off of a steady stream of dozens of new classic/x/zero/zx games that all had charge shots and slides/dashes. we got one or two of those a year for over a decade. we had TWO mainline games without them. so stripping that away was way more novel at the time

i feel bad for the dozens of designers at insomniac who surely tried to tell their higher ups that no, their completely linear action game does not need a glowing trail constantly telling the player where to go (including leading you to side challenges and collectibles), only to be overruled
