But the people who don’t understand comma rules still won’t understand them if you *do* put a comma there, so you might as well exclude the comma so the headline will be unambiguous to people who *do* understand comma rules.

Lizzy @someonelizz.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
If you used an Oxford comma in this headline, that would actually *create* ambiguity: it would then be ambiguous whether “a New York vigilante” is an appositive or not. The lack of a comma makes it clear (if you understand comma rules, which admittedly many people don’t) that it’s not an appositive.

And even if the Oxford comma posts are jokes, I see this kind of thing all the time, including in contexts that clearly aren’t jokes, or that seem highly unlikely to be jokes.

Art teachers sometimes say, “Draw what you see, not what you know.” When people say “haha this is why you should use the Oxford comma” about sentences that would be made *more* ambiguous with an Oxford comma, they’re metaphorically drawing what they know, not what they see.

I’m not anti-Oxford comma. I typically use it myself. I’m just against the memeification of everything, the habit of invoking received wisdom without stopping to think about whether it actually applies to the particular example you’re talking about.

Headlines like this always reveal that “Oxford comma” is a meme frequently invoked by people who do not actually understand how commas work. (Or perhaps they are just making a very unoriginal joke based on an inaccurate premise about how commas work.)

Lizzy @someonelizz.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
The lack of an Oxford comma here indicates that this is a list of three items and that there are no appositives. If you added an Oxford comma, then it would be ambiguous whether “a New York vigilante” was a) an appositive coreferential with “Sylvia Plath” or b) simply the second item in a list.
BlueSky post reading “Why I’m a fan of the Oxford comma.” The image it’s referring to is a headline reading “Sylvia Plath, a New York vigilante and Shah or Iran featured in latest historical fiction”

who knew that that Brian Eno quote would also apply to Swiss cheese
In Swiss cheese production, the number and size of eyes declined in the 2000s. This was due to increased hygiene standards, which reduced the number of dust particles in the milk around which gas bubbles form. In 2025, the Swiss Federal Administrative Court approved the addition of hay flower [de] powder (a mixture of various wildflowers and grasses) to the milk during cheesemaking, to allow for eyes of the typical number and size to form.Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.

I read Meeting New People by Daniel Lavery! It’s about loneliness and friendship breakups, and it said exactly the thing I needed to hear about my friendship breakup. If you’re sad and also tired of feel-good platitudes about loss, this book is for you.
Cover of Meeting New People. It has a painting of a stubborn-looking little girl sitting at a table.

The color of red wine. (I don’t like to drink it, I just like the color.) I know “burgundy” may seem like the obvious word for it, but when I look up burgundy it always seems browner than what I have in mind. “Cranberry,” maybe; a deep purplish red.

(and that conveniently elides the fact that, if we’re bringing up privileged demographic traits, A is overall much more privileged than B), all the while explicitly insisting that “white” isn’t an insult, which, sure, it’s not inherently! but you clearly use it as one while pretending you don’t
010
Lizzy @someonelizz.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
Example I saw on Twitter: A is a cis white woman who grew up middle-class, B is a white trans woman who grew up in poverty, A does not like B and refers to her as a “white woman” (in a way clearly meant to be disparaging, and in a context that was not related to race except insofar as everything is)

Many people on social media follow the unspoken rule “Describe people you like by the ways in which they are marginalized, and describe people you dislike by the ways in which they are privileged.”

me reading a post about pickle-flavored Oreos: Is this an Angels in America reference? 🤔
Taste: For starters, the OREO cookie part tastes like a regular OREO chocolate sandwich cookie. The fudge part tastes like: FUCK YOU I’M A PICKLE!!!!!!!!LOUIS: How?
PRIOR (Furious): Fuck you! I’m a prophet!

You’d think the fact that a cucumber looks less like a fruit would make it *more* interesting that it’s a fruit, though! So it is surprising that the cucumber didn’t become the go-to fun fact.

Relatedly, if you are in or near Aurora, Colorado, you too can see Angels in America for the next few weeks. (As it happens, the actor playing Prior bears a striking visual resemblance to Stephen Spinella, the original Prior Walter on Broadway.)

I joke, and of course the playwright is Jewish, but Prior Walter is a WASP, and hearing him say “More life” is an Easter sermon to me.

Spent Easter Sunday watching a story about a man in his early 30s who was unfairly persecuted by society, was betrayed by a man close to him, and who went to Heaven and came back. I’m referring, of course, to Angels in America.

It also had stuff like “Jane Smith [regular person, not a celebrity or socialite] got married at her parents’ house, wearing [detailed description of her dress]. The bridesmaid, her sister, wore [detailed description of dress].” Like if an IG post were just the image description without the image.

I don’t have the screenshots on hand, but I once found an old local paper that published stuff like “Mrs. Smith recently returned from visiting her grandchildren in California” (presumably so the next time you ran into Mrs. Smith, you’d know to ask about her trip)

The way I explain this idea is, if a non-native English speaker hears someone use the word in its common but prescriptively incorrect meaning & asks you what it means, it’s not helpful for you to only tell them what it’s “supposed” to mean. It’s helpful to tell them how it’s actually used.

It is very deliberately, very precisely, very vividly about what it was like to be alive in a particular place and time. They talk about the ozone because that’s what people were talking about in 1985! That it feels dated now is a feature, not a bug.
090
Lizzy @someonelizz.bsky.social · 14/02/2026
It’s not even just nebulously set in the 80s; it explicitly opens in Oct 1985, spends most of its time in late 1985 & early 1986, and ends in Jan 1990. The main character literally looks at the camera (in the HBO version) and says “It’s January 1990.” Kushner wanted us to know EXACTLY when it’s set.

Lizzy @someonelizz.bsky.social · 14/02/2026
The ozone references make the play feel more optimistic, because we know that problem got solved. Also, it is a period piece!!! It’s not supposed to feel timeless, nor is it supposed to feel like it could be set in the 21st century.
