Generative AI is now embedded in the workflows of major newsrooms, while data centers consume roughly 1.5% of world electricity. How should journalists approach it? Join us May 21 for a training with Yumi Wilson and @soljourno.bsky.social ow.ly/B1FP50YUAXj
A gray and orange graphic with a photo of presenter Yumi Wilson and an image of Earth in the background of text that reads: Covering the Planet with the Tools That Tax It: AI for Climate, Science and Environmental Journalists. In this one-hour session, veteran journalist and San Francisco State University Professor Yumi Wilson covers AI as solutions journalism does, by examining what AI actually does in newsrooms (response), what the evidence shows about its costs and benefits (evidence), what reporters are learning about its best uses (insight), and where it falls short (limitations). Using Climate Visuals to Tell a More Complex StoryVisual journalists are on the front line of the climate crisis.

They are a newsroom’s eyes and ears on the ground, documenting increasingly extreme weather events, disasters, displaced communities and those creating their own solutions. Visual journalism can humanize climate chaos and make complex science relatable. Two experienced visual journalists teamed up to share approaches they’ve learned to document the climate story holistically, using visuals to deepen understanding rather than just intensifying feeling. This isn’t just about technique — it involves a commitment to ethical behavior and care for the people and places visited. The more personal the story, the more universal it will be. Make sure to document those stories with trust, sensitivity and reciprocity.
