🌊 Terribly sorry to hear about the passing of Laurie Padman. I first met him while working as a graduate student in the Southern Ocean GLOBEC program more than 20 years ago. Laurie's contributions to Antarctic science were extensive. I always find reading his work illuminating. Rest in peace.

Walked through the OpenAI Navier Stokes breakthrough in my graduate-level Ocean Dynamics class today and ended on this slide. We had a super thought-provoking and respectful conversation with a huge range of opinions. Georgia Tech students rock! 🐝
Three quotes:

1) “While unlikely, we cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from [Buckmaster & Alpöge] usage of our products helped improve our models.”
OpenAI statement

2) “I am not happy about the presentation quality in [our] papers. Ideally, we would have preferred to spend weeks turning the LLM generated proofs into something readable from the very first page. This level of care is what these problems and the community devoted to these problems deserves.”
Prof. Tristan Buckmaster, NYU-Courant

3) “[This situation] extremely damaging to mathematics; it convinces decision makers that human mathematicians are obsolete, and it convinces young people that their passion for mathematics has no future.”
Prof. Michael Harris, Columbia University

The Trump administration said it would stop funding the Arctic Report Card, the longstanding effort to collect research on how the fastest-warming place on Earth is changing. It's the latest in a series of moves by the administration to curtail scientific research into the impacts of climate change. William Brangham discussed more with glaciologist Twila Moon, the Arctic Report Card's editor.

@soccomproject.bsky.social @bgc-argo.bsky.social @globaloceanbgc.bsky.social 🌊The commentary by Dove et al (bit.ly/4fd2whZ) on the future of Argo comes at a critical moment for US Argo. GO-BGC, the major US BGC-Argo project funded by NSF completes all float deployments in 3 months. 1/3

This is exciting because small-scale vertical velocities in the ocean are notoriously difficult to measure! 🔬 Our inferred velocities of > 100 m/day hint that the internal ocean may resemble a roller coaster, where fine-scale currents can rapidly lift and plunge water masses. 🎢
