How do black hole jets accelerate? Using both EHT and lower-frequency data for several black holes, a team of EHT scientists have now made advances in answering this long-standing question. The study is now published in Astronomy & Astrophysics. #blackhole #astronomy More here: tinyurl.com/4mjt8pph

🌍🌪️ Extreme weather is intensifying, impacting people, & nature. More heatwaves, stronger storms & rising floods all require urgent action.🧪 Read UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres statement on #WorldMeteorologicalDay ⤵️ 🔗 @wmo-global.bsky.social wmo.int/content/wmo-...
Image shows an aerial photograph of flood damage with an overlaid quote about extreme weather. The right side displays flooded residential areas with houses partially submerged in dark water, surrounded by partially submerged trees. On the left, there's a semi-transparent green overlay containing text describing increasing climate impacts. A circular profile photo appears in the top left corner. The IPBES logo is visible in the bottom right corner. The text states: "Extreme weather and climate impacts are becoming more intense. We are seeing more frequent and intense heatwaves, more devastating storms and floods, more rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones." The quote is attributed to António Guterres, UN Secretary General. The image provides a stark visual example of flooding impacts mentioned in the quote.

Heart cockles have evolved structures similar to fibre optic cable bundles, according to research in Nature Communications. These ‘window-like’ structures channel sunlight to symbiotic algae living inside their shells, while blocking out harmful ultraviolet radiation. go.nature.com/4hW2j39 🧪
This is figure 1, which shows heart cockles (Corculum cardissa and Corculum spp.) are asymmetrical, photosymbiotic bivalves.

The #core of the #Earth spins around a slightly different axis compared to the #mantle. In this animation we start in a space frame and switch gradually to the frame spinning with the mantle. In that frame the core appears to wobble. The mantle precesses and the core, being fluid, lags a bit. 🧪 🔭

Descartes and the Mind-Body Problem [via MIT Press and Jonathan Westphal] 🧪🧠 Bit of a stretch to say this "mystery" haunts #philosophy to this day. Without the body, there is no 'mind' - which is simply a process in the body substrate. getpocket.com/explore/item... #mind #body #duality #philsky

Descartes and the Discovery of the Mind-Body Problem
The French philosopher René Descartes is often credited with discovering the mind-body problem, a mystery that haunts philosophers to this day. The reality is more complicated than that.
