happy Duanwu! (no i dont want to call it dragon boat festival it's kind of diminishing) different parts of china celebrates it differently!

Historical Roots & Cultural Fusion

Harbin’s Duanwu celebrations go back over a thousand years. During the Jurchen (Jin Dynasty) era, people held horseback archery contests. Under the Manchu Qing Dynasty, dragon boat racing and zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) became popular. Later, with the influx of migrants from central China (“Chuang Guandong”) and Western influences in the early 20th century, Harbin added picnicking and camping to the mix. Today, locals regard Duanwu as one of the three most important festivals, alongside Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival.

Harbin’s Unique Duanwu Customs

1. The "Sleepless Night" by the Songhua River
Unlike most cities where festivities start on the morning of Duanwu, Harbin kicks off the night before. Families and friends gather along the banks of the Songhua River on the evening of the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. They stay up all night – singing, dancing, playing cards, setting off fireworks, and enjoying street food. It’s a massive outdoor carnival that transforms the riverfront into a sea of laughter and lights.

2. Early Morning "Spring Outing" (Taqing)
At dawn on Duanwu day, everyone goes for a traditional walk in the fresh morning dew. This is called taqing (stepping on green). In Harbin, people head to the riverbank, parks like Sun Island, or nearby hills. The belief is that walking through dew at sunrise washes away bad luck and brings good health for the coming year.

3. Washing Face with River Water
Many locals scoop up Songhua River water at daybreak to wash their faces and hands. It’s thought to cleanse the body of evil spirits and prevent summer illnesses – a practical custom in the city’s humid summer climate.

4. Collecting Mugwort (Artemisia)
People pick fresh mugwort (艾蒿) early in the morning and hang it over their doors or tuck it behind their ears. In Harbin, it’s common to see entire families cycling or walking to the suburbs to gather wild mugwort, which is believed to repel insects and ward off evil.

5. Five-Colored Threads & Perfume Pouches
Children (and many adults) wear five-colored silk threads on their wrists, ankles, and necks. These are kept on until the first rainfall, when they’re thrown into water to carry away disease. Sachets filled with aromatic herbs are also worn – a custom especially popular in Harbin’s Russian-influenced old town, where you’ll find beautifully embroidered pouches blending Chinese and European designs.

6. Food with a Local Twist

· Zongzi – Glutinous rice wrapped in reed leaves, with sweet fillings like red bean paste or dates (savory ones are less common here).
· Boiled eggs – Hard-boiled eggs (often dyed red) are a must. In Harbin, people have a playful tradition of "egg fighting" – tapping eggs against each other; the one whose shell doesn’t crack is the winner, symbolizing strength.
· Cold noodles and beer – Thanks to Russian influence, many families enjoy a picnic with Harbin’s famous sausage, bread, and locally brewed beer alongside traditional festive foods.

7. Dragon Boat Racing (with a Northern Flair)
Despite the cold climate, Harbin holds dragon boat races on the Songhua River. The boats are brightly decorated, and the races are accompanied by drumming and cheering. Unlike southern China, where racing is more competitive, here it’s often a festive community spectacle with a mix of amateur teams.

8. Camping & Outdoor Picnics
Because Harbin summers are short and pleasant, Duanwu weekend is seen as the perfect start to outdoor season. Thousands of families set up tents along the riverbanks, barbecue, and spend the whole day outdoors – a tradition borrowed from early 20th-century Russian expats, making Harbin’s Duanwu feel like a cheerful blend of Chinese ritual and Western leisure.

Harbin’s Duanwu is less solemn and more festive than in many other Chinese cities. It’s a night-long riverside party, a dawn nature walk, a herb-gathering adventure, and a picnic feast – all wrapped in ancient wishes for health, luck, and community. The city’s multicultural history (Chinese, Manchu, Russian) gives it a distinctive character that you won’t find anywhere else in China.
