The university administrative process used by Cornell to discipline the "Cornell 7" was an absolute kangaroo court. A hearing officer surfed the web during the hearings; Cornell didn't even notify one student of the charge he was facing. unherd.com/2026/10/insi...

Trump's followers are now in thrall to a kind of schizo-politics. The US military is struggling to resupply interceptors. Meanwhile, I see MAGA die-hards on X being like, "Right, now let's get ready to conquer Mexico. YASSS!" A subset of America seems permanently trapped in fantasy.

The last few years have left me thinking I'd rather disagree with a Fukuyama than to inhabit the mental world of a Hazony. Catholic post-liberalism was never comfortable with pinched nationalism, and we often took pains to distinguish ourselves. But Hazony (and others far nastier than he) won.

There is no theorizing Trumpism (believe me, I devoted more energy to it than almost anyone else circa 2017-2019). I increasingly share Francis Fukuyama's view that it's just the follies of one especially unvirtuous man, now aggravated and now checked by his grasping hangers-on.

One of the essentials of woke was the belief that changing language would solve crises or contradictions: "unhoused" instead of "homeless"; "birthing people" instead of mothers; etc. Trumpism is now doing the same as it fails: "New America," "Lake America," "Strait of Trump."
