genuinely the best part of all of this is that when i went to tell the ten year old about this hilarity, i showed her a picture of Nick Offerman and entirely unprompted she said, "wow, it looks like Payton Tolle!"

as someone who has been a Peter Gammons fan for better than thirty years, i am admittedly biased, but if you like baseball, i can’t see any way you wouldn’t enjoy this. he’s the GOAT, and the stories are incredible.

the weather during the monktoberfest was almost 80, sunny and summer-like. at my annual post-monktoberfest lunch, meanwhile, it’s 60, dark and now spitting rain. poseidon’s back.

to our sponsors, to our speakers, to our vendors, to our staff but most of all to our attendees: thank you. we could not do this without every one of you.

would have preferred to get in with a win, but thank you atlanta. if you told late may sog that the red sox were going to the playoffs, he would have said you were crazy. time to go look at the postseason schedule to see if i need to bring my ipad on the monktoberfest cruise again.

somewhat incredibly, in spite of being left entirely unsupervised this weekend, i managed to not blow myself up, set anything on fire (that i didn't want to be on fire) or fall off a ladder while finishing our new woodshed.

they're redoing the sidewalks on the island, so there are probably half a dozen large machines within a half mile that could move this crushed rock in less than five minutes. it's going to take me a little longer than that.

as it is every year, listening to the Jimmy Fund telecast during the Sox game is equally heartbreaking and acting to restore my faith in humanity. if you’ve got a buck or two to spare to help kids and families beat cancer, text kcancer to 56512 or head to JimmyFund.org.

given that the headline apparently originally called it an open source model, i'm happy to see the Times has corrected that and explicitly clarified the definitions in its piece www.nytimes.com/2026/08/10/t...

was getting worried that my buddies were looking a little disheveled, but Claude assures me that all is well
Text from Claude reading:

Yes — American crows molt once a year, a complete molt (all feathers replaced), rather than multiple molts across different seasons like some birds.

In Maine, that molt typically runs from around late May/June through September, peaking in mid-to-late summer. It's gradual and sequential — flight feathers drop symmetrically in pairs so the bird's never grounded — but you'll often see them looking a bit ragged or patchy in July and August, sometimes with visible gaps in the wings or a scruffy head. By fall they're back in fresh plumage for winter.

after staying up far too late, walked early this morning on my island. ran into three different people on the trail. they all asked if i’d watched last night’s sox game, and we laughed and parted with “GO SOX.” new england is so much happier when the sox are relevant.

this wasn't my first interaction with Darryl Taft, but it's the earliest one i can easily retrieve. he was one of my favorite reporters to work with, and genuinely one of the nicest human beings i've had the good fortune to meet. RIP
