Not just red states. Blue names come from languages other than English, and tend to evoke ancient roots, & historically continuous religious and ethnic identities older than white. Of course they may just have more poc and immigrants, but among “whites” I wonder if it echoes the same ancestral grief
Of the Top 25 Bluest names, 84% of the girl and boy names are rooted in languages other than English. These include Arabic names such as Aisha and Ali, Italian names such as Viviana and Nico, and Irish names such as Maeve and Rory. The Blue State parents choosing these names are tying their children’s identities to specific ethnic or religious cultures. The vast majority of the Bluest names, 70% are ancient names with theological ties. Names like Rachel and Yusuf are found in religious texts like the Bible and Quran, while others, such as Remy and Maeve, are linked to saints and mythology, respectively.

The examples in this article are really interesting. Red State names often have first names that sound like surnames. The *aesthetic* of patrimony feels right to parents in red states. There’s a feeling of grief here, of filling in something for a missing ancestry
The Reddest surnames-turned-first-names might *sound* like old family names, with the popular "son" suffix denoting patrimony, the "ton" and "ley" endings identifying habitational roots. But these surname-style names are more likely to be chosen for their image or style than for any genuine family connection. Using surnames as first names is a practice rooted in inheritance and lineage as well as in all-male cultures like fraternities and sports teams.

This is precisely what drugs have to be. The chemical names are one matter, being scientifically exact, and the generic names are another matter, being strictly regulated. The brand names are left to board rooms of advertising psychologists and marketers and Freudians. “Wellbutrin” = wellbeing...

“White” is not a real ethnicity, but a new thing: a constructed ethnicity-brand that retroactively changes your ancestry. White names therefore have the job of *evoking* ancestry and *sounding like* names.

>all names are fake Yes, beloved. But some names have a history and some are crafted to have the illusion of history. I claim this is white trauma (unironically)

softconsume.bsky.social @softconsume.bsky.social · 17/03/2026
Something I just learned white people have in common with commercial drugs: evocative, quasi-meaningful **fake names.** “Baylor, Hayes, and Haisley” = hay bales, the way “viagra” = vigor... nameberry.com/blog/the-red... health.clevelandclinic.org/how-are-medi...
Often, companies try to come up with a brand name that somehow reflects what the drug does. For example:
- Viagra, which treats erectile dysfunction, is a combination of "vigor" (a word that reflects potency and stamina) plus Niagara (a reference to a steady stream or Niagara Falls).
- Lyrica, which treats nerve pain, evokes soothing music lyrics (like the soothing of nerves).Another popular motif among Red State names is romanticized rural imagery. There's cowboy-conjuring Stetson and bandana pattern Paisley. Red State parents disproportionately use farming occupational last names as first names like Shepherd and Colter (a keeper of horses) and those that *sound* like they should be, such as Baylor, Hayed, and Haisley, evoking hay bales.

Enslaved people on the plantation used to get a pair of shoes once a year as a “Christmas gift.” Sham charity that marks being owned. Idk, maybe no connection but it seems like evil is always giving out shoes

The picture from Judges I'm getting is a lot of false starts in a relationship between God and humanity; a lot of things that *almost* look like a covenant of love and trust, that just don't quite align and fall to pieces and end in terrible violence

Nobody told Jephthah to vow to make a burnt offering; nobody told him to then burn his own daughter. This "duty" was his own invention. Maybe a lesson here about perversely following rules of piety for their own sake, especially rules you invented, without regard to whether your choices lead to evil

WELL The story of Jephthah and his daughter is haunting. What a horrible thing. A troubling parallel to Abraham and Isaac. It feels like an "empty" version. Judges continues to make me gasp at the absolute depths of human depravity. If there's a lesson here I wonder what it could be...

Also I really like the insight that idolatry is the parody of worship that degrades the worshiper. An instant cure that cures nothing, but makes you sicker and makes you crave itself. I think this is definitely apt for how idolatry is described in the old testament.

Whoa this is really insightful! I'm thinking about the intro to Pandemonium Tremendum, where he lists three 'universes' (classificational, relational, relevantial) and the definitions of God they entail. Most troubling is relevantial (real = relevant to me, universe = personalized information feed)
Again following Tillich's theological analysis of culture, the God suggested by the relevantial universe is any reality that sufficiently addresses the ultimate or most urgent concerns of the individual about the thread of nonbeing. In reality, we often get stuck with lesser gods, idols from our own hands that deceptively satisfy our ultimate concerns because of the power of their immediate relevance. Since no finite and mortal creature, itself subject to the same threat of nonbeing, can deliver on the promise to secure itself and others against this threat, the seeker is driven to the very source or ground of being, the only true Ultimate, at least in theory.

Wanted to add, maybe if you see Moby-Dick as a point in a distribution over strings, then it makes sense to experience a point in a distribution over sequences of feelings. But I guess there's still temporal mystery in dialog with other readers. Also wonder about 'all-at-once' novels like Pale Fire
