Before I moved to Melbourne, I looked around the net to see if I could find anything interesting going on with shakuhachi. I discovered that there was one guy--David Brown--who was making beautiful wooden ones, and not only that, he also taught aikido.

For my partner's recent birthday, I wrote her this sonata for string quartet. It could benefit from some polish but I'm pretty happy with it at this point (and I think she has listened to it about 50 times so far). jeremy.org/music/2026/s...

Some amazing gay history. Listen up kids.
I'm watching that documentary "Before Stonewall" about gay history
pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.

The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast
about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed
psychologists, a police officer, and one "known homosexual". The
"known homosexual" is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis
White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.
So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale
Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television
and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there's nothing
wrong with him mentally and he's never been arrested. When asked
whether he'd take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether
his family knows he's gay, he says that they didn't up until tonight, but
he guesses they're going to find out, and he'll probably be fired from
his job as well. So of course the host is like ... why are you doing this
interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says "I think
that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself."

1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.

Despite the pseudonym, Dale's boss did indeed recognize him from
the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into
ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten
a new job at a higher salary.
Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further.
It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity
agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that,
but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person
who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the
statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson's disclosure had
a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the
U.S.

It’s very discouraging to watch our country slowly re-learn the lessons that led to the end of segregation, among them that people who think they’re racially superior are nearly universally incompetent fools unable to face up to their own deficiencies and putting them in charge is suicide

Incendiary greeting to tesla
Published on 4 March 2025

There is now an acceleration of the fascist, patriarchal, ecocidary and colonialist project. As the elites multiply the Nazi salutes we decided to greet in our own way a tesla dealer in the night of 2 to 3 March 2025 at pleasure-of-touch.
We set fire to vehicles inside the enclosure using two gasoline cans. We wondered after the fact whether fireball plates would not have been a more effective way.

Faced with the strengthening of the neo-Nazi movement on a global scale, we are the anti-fascism that does not believe in the myth of democracy.

Faced with the current maleistic and transphobic offensive, we are a fragment of the fight against patriarchy.

Faced with the industrial devastation that is destroying the planet, we are the radical ecology that does not believe in technological solutions.

In the face of colonialism and white supremacism, in the face of poverty and widespread exploitation, we express our rejection in deed.

With this act, we are part of the call 'Welcome Spring, burns a tesla', to the international momentum that targets Tesla from Germany to the United States through the Netherlands, and more broadly to anarchist conflict.

We support Louna, charged in the fight against the A69 and all the anarchist prisoners, the cavale and the fighters.

Let us continue the offensive against techno-fascists.

To me, a Nazi salute means, "I want to murder your family." There can be no irony about it: It puts deep anger and hatred in my heart to see it done and I will never forgive anyone who justifies or minimizes it.

I appreciate this response from Ed Yong on why he requests that people mask at his events. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...
You’ve been clear in saying that Covid has not gone away. You ask people to wear masks at your events. But that attitude is not necessarily where the rest of the world is. How do you think about continuing to take precautions and advising others to do so when it feels as if society has moved on? I do it for a bunch of reasons. Firstly, I have learned that I enjoy not being sick. I know that the cost of long Covid is real and substantial, and I don’t want to run that risk lightly. I also know that I have many friends and people I’m close to who are immunocompromised. So for the sake of the people around me, I also don’t want to get sick. When I do events, I wear a mask for those reasons, and because I know that every time I do a talk, while the vast majority of people in the audience have probably moved on, there are going to be other people who haven’t. I think it makes a huge difference to them to have the person at the front of the stage wear a mask. It tells them, It’s not weird. So I do it for that reason, too. In terms of holding this line at a point when a large swath of society has moved on, I have written a lot about the panic-neglect cycle.

A friend who works for NASA in an engineering capacity was supposed to go speak to a different friend's daughter's "Women in STEM" high school lunch group. The NASA speakers bureau forbade it because "it sounds too much like a DEI project." This is a rerun of Nazi Germany and I'm not kidding.
