The Geller news is heartbreaking. Learning of these crimes always is. Rather than listen to a perpetrator, I recommend reading Nathalie Lawhead‘s important account of outing a rapist and games media‘s subsequent betrayal of her bravery. It must have been so heavy to write. Justice for survivors.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Sorry, I don't know star wars lol

Nothing is a cognitohazard. You are just mentally gumptionless.

It looks like it encountered the “please subscribe or allow cookies” pop-up and decided that was the article topic. In a more amusing irony, when I went to sign up to the author’s newsletter, of course I got a picture captcha to do.

This has been sold out since the day after it went on sale. I acknowledge the interest in cashing in on physical media’s sudden prominence but you may want to actually have something to sell.

Staring at my shelf of boxed games then off in to the distance wistfully.

And you’ve even failed to understand that.

Oh my god you haven’t even read the book, you’re going by the abstract.

I’m pretty sure it was published by you hitting “Reply” on a social media app after fundamentally misunderstanding Prof. Jones’ scholarship but go off king.

This take is so bad that it should be engraved on the thousand year monument that looms over the underground facility where they entomb world-endingly bad takes.

I’ll give myself a manicure with a hammer before I use the physical CAS Abstracts again though.

This used to be entirely what the web was for, lore-hounds trading their secrets. I find myself increasingly dependent on old-school approaches (indexes, chasing references up to their origin) as time goes on. I’m reminded of Gleick’s “The Digital Attic” essay from the dot-com era.

(Because this is social media I feel the need to caveat that when I say “game AI” I mean “games in AI” as much as “AI in games”. And I don’t mean that AlphaFold is derivative of AlphaGo, just that they’re fruit of the same creative tree that outcomes-oriented research would not have nurtured.)

Well, there’s almost certainly no AlphaFold without AlphaGo; Hassabis’ career is pretty much a series of orbits through game AI and biology and back again. We advance our frontiers when people are allowed to apply their talents to their passions.

I particularly miss GamesTM though. It struck a remarkable balance between Edge’s sense of professionalism and the other mags’ variety of authorial voices and sense of fun.

Probably hard for younger readers (if there are any!) to understand what a golden age for mags that was. Edge & GamesTM for quality content, Gamesmaster for the kids, characterful but tasteful official PS/PS2/Xbox mags, PSM2’s must-have covermount VHS tape of the MGS2 trailer…

I have a soft spot for Extermination. It made a stumbling attempt at almost everything Resident Evil 4 would eventually do perfectly - weapon customisation, over the shoulder aiming, a then-novel contextual action button. I think I cleared it four times.
