An EPA report has warned that we are miles off reaching our 2030 emissions targets. Missing these targets won't just have environmental or social costs – the EU fines that come with missing them will cost us dearly. Is the govt playing chicken with the EU in the hopes they just won't fine us?

Today @alancurran.bsky.social passed a motion for the city council to condemn the US and Israeli illegal war in Iran and to condemn the Iranian military response against civilians. The council will also be writing to the taoiseach calling on the Irish gov to stop the US using Shannon to refuel

Campaign launch for @socialmide.bsky.social at 1830 in the Harbour Hotel. There's a wonderful line up of speakers, poets and musicians so feel free to bring your family and friends! Unfortunately I'm at a family celebration so can't make it, but it'll be a great night! @socdemsgalway.bsky.social

Rents are already unaffordable, but investors say they should rise 20-25%. Families are at breaking point - these increases risk pushing more people into homelessness. Housing policy cannot mean higher rents for those already struggling.

A fantastic turn out for our SNAs here in Galway and across the country. A massive thank you to the organisers, the protesters and especially the SNAs that came to fight for what's right!

7 deaths on our roads over the weekend including a 16 y/o girl walking her dog. Why the obsession over hi-vis? Why the reduction in active travel funding? Where are the 30km/h zones? Where are the red light cameras? Why no enforcement? Why aren't intelligent speed systems default on new cars?

Galway councillor claims RSA messaging amounts to ‘victim blaming’ – ‘Children are not killed because of a lack of high-vis vests’

Absolutely scandalous that the government appears to be rowing back on committments to an elective hospital in Merlin Park. Here in Galway we have some of the longest wait lists in the country for elective procedures. These facilities are not an optional add on, they provide vital care.

The housing crisis affects every aspect of people's lives. It's especially profound in Gaeltacht areas, where people can't afford to remain in their communities. How do we build communities if people can't afford a roof over their heads? Join us today to be part of Míde's campaign in Galway West.

The 'pact' system in the council has more influence than a lot of people are aware. What is it? How is the pact decided? How can they influence decision and policy? A few thoughts below: @social-democrats.bsky.social @socdemsgalway.bsky.social

Scrapping the Triple Lock would remove the guardrails on where Irish troops can be sent. It weakens our neutrality and sidelines the UN. If the Government thinks it has a mandate, let the people decide.

The far-right don’t win when they win elections. They win when centrist parties like Fianna Fáil adopt their policies to suit their narrative. The Social Democrats will continue to push against far right politics moving to the centre – no matter what.

For a year, EU leaders have responded to Trump with flattery instead of firmness. He does not respect weakness. The EU must show unity and decisiveness. We have the tools. We must use them.

Our annual Local Improvement Scheme allocation of €30,000 can now be submitted to the council for review. Every councillor receives that sum for local improvements in their community. While I have a few projects in mind for 2026, please send any suggestions to alan.curran@cgcc.ie.

Compliance with the law is not a gift from Big Tech. X’s late promises and weak enforcement show how lightly harm is taken. We need real enforcement and accountability to protect people.
