Alan McManus picks out snooker’s player of the season so far
The trophies have been shared around so far this season (Pictures: Getty) Alan McManus sees Judd Trump as the player of the season so far, edging ahead of the likes of Mark Selby and double-champion Jak Jones. There have been some big-name titlists already this season but it has also been an unpredictable start to the campaign in many ways. Jones began the season with no ranking titles to his name and now has two, having won twice in just six events. Chang Bingyu and Ali Carter have joined Jones in winning ranking titles despite being ranked outside of the top 16 at the time, illustrating how many contenders there are on the professional tour now. The more predictable winners have been Selby at the China Open, world champion Wu Yize at the Shenzhen Open and Trump at the non-ranking Shanghai Masters in August. Trump may not have got his hands on a ranking title yet this season, but he has been very consistent, reaching at least the quarter-finals in four of the five events he has played. ## Are you snooker loopy? You're in the right place. I'm Phil Haigh, and I cover the game we all love for **Metro**. In my newsletter, The Table, I analyse the biggest talking points, pull back the curtain on the sport and crown the biggest winners and losers every week. Sign up here. Phil has been reporting on snooker for over a decade His one early slip up came at the China Open when he lost to eventual runner-up Noppon Saengkham in the first round. Judd Trump has consistently reached the business end of events (Picture: Getty Images) The 37-year-old has turned in some under-par performances when he has got to the business end of events, including in a semi-final defeat to Wu at the Shenzhen Open on Saturday, but McManus still feels he has performed better than anyone else so far this season. ‘Judd, for me, the player of the season so far, it’s just the very odd match he’s not turning up and throwing in the odd bad performance,’ McManus said on his Snooker Breakfast podcast. ‘But we can forgive him that because he’s winning tons and tons of matches and the majority of them at a landslide.’ On his 6-1 loss to Wu in Shenzhen, the former Masters champion said: ‘Just one of those bad days at the office, I guess, and he’ll have to put it down to that. ‘He’s had one or two heavy defeats this season, Noppon Saengkham was 6-3, but we know Judd is going to have a terrific season, he’s already having a very very good one, probably the best of anyone.’ Wu Yize impressively sparked into life at the Shenzhen Open (Picture: Getty Images) As for the man who knocked Trump out in Shenzhen, Wu went on to lift the title and add it to the World Championship and International Championship that he has won in the last 12 months at just 22 years old. ‘Wu Yize brushed aside Judd Trump,’ said McManus. ‘Credit to him, he’s holding that mantle of being world champion. It’s not weighing heavy on his shoulders to me, he looks really calm. In no way is he looking under serious pressure. ‘You’re talking about three massive events in 11 months. He hasn’t had a great season so far, granted, but I certainly didn’t think that was going to last very long and it hasn’t.’ Wu had struggled in ranking events this campaign before his Shenzhen triumph, so he wouldn’t have much of an argument to challenge Trump for player of the season so far. However, Selby would certainly get some votes and Jones might do as well after winning the Championship League and the British Open. Jones’ run to victory in Cheltenham was especially impressive, beating Chang and Trump on his way to the British Open final where he downed Selby. The Jester from Leicester has won the biggest tournament of the season so far, the China Open, was runner-up at the British Open and has been to two more quarter-finals, winning more matches than any other player. Trump did whitewash Selby 5-0 in the Shenzhen quarter-finals, though, in their only meeting this season. Wu Yize lands first title as world champion as 22-year-old reaches new heights
World champion Wu Yize has added another title to his CV (Picture: Getty Images) Wu Yize has won his first title since becoming world champion, beating Yuan Sijun 10-5 in the Shenzhen Open final, and climbing to new heights in the world rankings. Still just 22 years old, Wu is up to number two in the rankings thanks to the £177,000 top prize in Shenzhen and moves very close to compatriot Zhao Xintong who holds the number one spot. Wu started the final in style with a break of 117 to win the first frame, but that proved to be the only century of the contest. The first session was keenly contested, with Yuan – in his first ranking final – looking good at 4-3 ahead and frustrating the favourite. However, Wu produced a stunning long red which began a brilliant steal from 56 points behind to win the eighth and then moved ahead in the final frame of the afternoon. Yuan’s challenge faltered in the second session and he would win just one more frame as Wu strolled to victory without really needing to hit top form. Phil has been reporting on snooker for over a decade The world champion was not at his brilliant best for a lot of the tournament, with bursts of excellence, without being relentless with his world class break-building. Wu Yize already has three ranking titles to his name (Picture: Getty Images) His tactical play is improving, though, and that was on show in a fantastic 6-1 win over Judd Trump in the semi-finals. That victory came after a 5-4 triumph over Shaun Murphy in the quarter-finals, which saw Wu make breaks of 94, 121 and 117 from 3-2 behind. Wu turns 23 later this month and has already racked up three ranking titles, including the biggest prize in the sport. With this win guaranteeing his place in all the events this season to come, he will now have his sights firmly set on Zhao’s number one spot. Yuan Sijun fell short in his first ranking final (Picture: Getty Images) Despite defeat, Yuan enjoyed the best week of his career as he reached a first ranking final and secured more prize money and ranking points (£76,000) than he ever has before. He certainly had an easier route to the final than Wu, beating Fan Zhengyi, Zak Surety, Michael Holt and Jimmy Robertson on his way to the showpiece, but he made the most of a favourable draw. A run to the final sees Yuan climb back inside the world’s top 32 and up to number seven on the one-year list, which means he is well placed for World Grand Prix and Players Championship qualification. > https://www.instagram.com/p/DdlozthCFzz/?hl=en&img_index=1 Wu’s latest win will only further his stardom, especially in his home country, but he has been making an impact on and off the table around the world. The Sheffield-based star was on show for Burberry at London Fashion Week last month and looked good doing it. WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson said of the world champion: ‘Wu Yize has quickly become a superstar in China, he is popular amongst peers and fans, drawing huge crowds this week. ‘He has also become popular amongst major global brands, so this is a very exciting time for snooker. ‘This new style of play, attacking and fearless is attractive to all snooker players and fans, worldwide. Wu Yize was also seen at London Fashion Week promoting a major British fashion brand. ‘He is young, polite, cool, very presentable, and happy to engage with fans, and I am sure all young players will look up to his style, home and away.’ Wu will be back in action at the Northern Ireland Open in Belfast on Monday October 19, taking on Scott Donaldson. The Shenzhen Open proved to be wildly unpredictable in one half of the draw and entirely as you might expect in the other. Early defeats for the likes of Zhao Xintong, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Williams, Kyren Wilson and Neil Robertson meant the quarter-finals in the top half were Yuan vs Holt and Jimmy Robertson vs Chris Wakelin. In the bottom half, the much more recognisable line-up saw Judd Trump hammer Mark Selby 5-0 and Wu edge Murphy 5-4. Yuan Sijun once described as ‘one of the best youngsters since Ronnie O’Sullivan’ finally delivering at Shenzhen Open
Yuan Sijun will take on Wu Yize in the Shenzhen Open final (Picture: Getty Images) Yuan Sijun is into his first ranking event final and it comes somewhat later than many expected after earning huge praise as a teenager. The 26-year-old will take on Wu Yize in the Shenzhen Open final on Sunday after an edgy 6-5 win over Jimmy Robertson in Saturday’s first semi-final. It is fair to say that the chips have fallen pretty kindly for Yuan on his run in Shenzhen, beating Fan Zhengyi, Zak Surety, Michael Holt and then world number 45 Robertson to reach the final. Remarkably, Yuan is ranked 33 in the world and he has only played players ranked below him on the way to the showpiece. Yuan will be second favourite against world champion Wu in the final, but there were people tipping him for glory before the Crucible king even reached the professional circuit. In the 2018/19 season, Yuan reached a semi and two big quarter-finals, beating the likes of John Higgins, Mark Williams, Ding Junhui, Mark Allen and Kyren Wilson over that campaign. Phil has been reporting on snooker for over a decade Just before his 19th birthday in 2019, Yuan attracted serious praise from Stephen Hendry, who told Metro: ‘Yuan Sijun, he’s one of the best youngsters I’ve seen since the likes of Ding, Ronnie [O’Sullivan], Mark Williams or John Higgins turned pro, he’s the best I’ve seen. Yuan attracted a lot of attention in the 2018/19 season (Picture: REX) ‘But it’s not an automatic, it’s how he’s looked after, does he do the right things with his career? But he has the best potential I’ve seen so far.’ O’Sullivan beat Yuan at the 2019 Welsh Open, but was also impressed, telling Eurosport: ‘I think he’s a very, very good player. For snooker, it’s great that we’ve got someone so young who has got potential to be world champion. ‘It’s great for the game and he’s going to be a huge star in China. It’s going to be interesting to see how he handles it and deals with it, and if he wants it, he can have it.’ Yuan has failed to live up to that kind of billing over the last seven years, reaching just one more ranking semi-final before this week in Shenzhen, at the 2025 German Masters. Remarkably he still hasn’t made his Crucible debut, losing in the final round of qualifying three times. The pandemic certainly didn’t help his progress and he dropped off the professional tour in 2021 after a spell of inactivity, although immediately returned. Why he has not managed to deliver on his promise since then, though, is unclear, and he admits he has found recent years very difficult. After beating Robertson, he told World Snooker Tour: ‘The pressure was huge throughout the whole match, right from the moment I came out to play. I could feel that I was playing completely differently compared with the previous few matches. Although I kept telling myself not to think about it, sometimes your brain just instinctively and subconsciously goes back to those thoughts. ‘There were so many different feelings mixed together. There is happiness, but also the sense of how difficult it has been and all the struggles over the years. I suppose, in a way, this is a little bit of an answer to myself after all these years. So many emotions came together, and in the end, I probably just couldn’t quite control them. ‘I feel that my first ranking final has come a little bit late. Since the pandemic in 2020, the years in between have been quite difficult, and I feel it hasn’t been easy. So after all these years, I just hope I can give myself something to show for it.’ Yuan has had another uneventful season so far, before Shenzhen (Picture: Shutterstock) It will be a huge task for him in a best-of-19 frame final against the world champion, who edged Shaun Murphy 5-4 in the quarters and then hammered Judd Trump 6-1 in the semis. Worryingly for his rivals, the freakishly good potter is now adding more strings to his bow. ‘My safety play has improved a lot,’ Wu said after dismantling Trump. ‘This was the best safety performance of my professional career, and it would have been nice if I could have been a little more fluent in scoring. ‘This match was also very important for my career, to be able to perform at this level in an area of the game that isn’t my strength, safeties, I’m very satisfied.’ Wu is into his fifth ranking final and looking for his third title at just 22 years old, so has much more experience on the big stage than his older opponent. Wu Yize sparkled in his semi-final thrashing of Judd Trump (Picture: Shutterstock) On taking on his compatriot for the title and £177,000 top prize, he said: ‘I’m happy, of course. ‘When I was preparing for the evening match, I saw that he had shed some tears. I believe it was his first ranking final, and it’s also my first final of the season. ‘Hopefully we can put on a great match for everyone. Of course, I hope I can take the trophy home, but we will both give it everything we have. ‘ A first title as world champion, just five months after conquering the Crucible would take a monkey off Wu’s back and set him on course for a fabulous season ahead as he challenges Zhao Xintong for the world number one spot. Yuan would have joyfully taken a first ranking final and guaranteed career-high prize money of at least £76,000, if he had been offered it at the start of the week. But with years of struggling behind him, this is his chance to fulfill the potential the two seven-time world champions saw in him back in 2019. > Why the Shenzhen Open is a huge week for five snooker stars Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Shocks continue at Shenzhen Open as two more former world champions fall
Neil Robertson has fallen in the last 16 in Shenzhen (Picture: Getty Images) The Shenzhen Open continues to provide shock results as Kyren Wilson and Neil Robertson were both upset in the last 16 on Thursday. In a pretty substantial surprise, Wilson was downed 5-2 by Michael Holt, who is into his first ranking quarter-final in almost two years. The Hitman had a brilliant day on Wednesday as he whitewashed Thepchaiya Un-Nooh 5-0 and followed it up with a superb performance against the 2024 world champion. Breaks of 126, 54, 84 and 84 helped him on his way to victory and handed out a consequential defeat for Wilson. The Warrior won this event in its previous guise – the Xi’an Grand Prix – two years ago, so a relatively early exit will see his world ranking take a hit as the points from 2024 tumble off. Holt will be upwardly mobile in the rankings thanks to this run as the world number 46 secures a quarter-final meeting with either Yuan Sijun or Zak Surety. ## Are you snooker loopy? Phil has been reporting on snooker for over a decade Robertson was the other former world champion to lose in the Thursday afternoon session in Shenzhen, downed 5-2 by Chris Wakelin. Michael Holt is enjoying his best run for a couple of years (Picture: Getty Images) With Wakelin ranked 12 in the world, it is not the level of upset that Holt produced, but it still represents a huge win for the Englishman who has been in fine form this week. The Monster knocked in three centuries on the bounce in his opening win over Liam Davies and then hammered Stuart Bingham 5-0 in the last 32. Wakelin will now be favourite in his quarter-final against Jimmy Robertson, who beat Scott Donaldson 5-0 on Thursday in the last 16. Chris Wakelin is into a 19th ranking quarter-final (Picture: Getty Images) The unusual quarter-final line-up has come together after a number of early shocks which saw Zhao Xintong, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Williams all beaten on the opening day in Shenzhen. Fellow top 16 players John Higgins, Ding Junhui and Xiao Guodong all followed them out of the competition on Tuesday. There are a number of big-hitters still swinging in Shenzhen, though, with the bottom half of the draw still boasting the likes of Mark Selby, Judd Trump, Shaun Murphy and world champion Wu Yize. The winner of Sunday’s final will claim the £177,000 top prize, so it is a career-changing opportunity for some of the underdogs still scrapping in Shenzhen. This season has already produced some long-shot winners, notably Jak Jones winning the first two ranking titles of his career at the Championship League and British Open. Ali Carter has also got his hands on a trophy, and despite being an established winner on tour, few expected the Captain to win last month’s English Open at 47 years old, him included. Mark Selby wants to avoid Neil Robertson fate as he approaches huge milestone
Mark Selby doesn’t fancy a low-key celebration of a huge landmark (Pictures: Getty/TNT Sports) Mark Selby is closing in on his 1,000th professional century, but does not want to get there in the same circumstances Neil Robertson did. Selby continued the brilliant form he has been showing this season in a 5-1 hammering of Jackson Page at the Shenzhen Open on Wednesday. The four-time world champion lost the first frame but then went on a scoring rampage, knocking in three centuries of 132, 135 and 138 along with a 77. Those three tons took his career tally to 980 as he gets ever closer to becoming the fifth player in history to reach 1,000 centuries. Ronnie O’Sullivan was the first to do so, followed by John Higgins, Judd Trump and Robertson, with the Australian hitting the milestone in underwhelming circumstances. The Thunder from Down Under made his 1,000th ton in an International Championship qualifier against Umut Dikme at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, which was played behind-closed-doors. Phil has been reporting on snooker for over a decade Robertson celebrated the huge achievement, but only in front of a solitary guest of his German opponent. > What a moment for this one man https://t.co/wQrFScyt26 pic.twitter.com/HbxH2lxElJ > > — Phil Haigh (@philhaigh_) September 30, 2025 Selby does not fancy the same kind of experience when he hits four figures, telling WST after beating Page: ‘I don’t know how many I’m on at the moment but I do need to look because I don’t want to be making my 1000th century behind closed doors, that’s for sure.’ O’Sullivan being the first player to reach 1,000 centuries was an iconic moment in the sport, especially as he did so in the last frame of an entire tournament. The Rocket reached the landmark as he beat Robertson 10-4 to win the 2019 Players Championship, doing so in front of a jubilant crowd in Preston. > Delighted to win the Players Championship tonight in Preston and buzzing to have made my 1,000th century in the final frame 🏆 Thanks to all my fans for the support. Hard luck to my fellow Aussie @nr147 a class act and an even better human 🇦🇺 pic.twitter.com/wzxNoJ1rqO > > — Ronnie O'Sullivan (@ronnieo147) March 10, 2019 Remarkably, Higgins and Trump both reached 1,000 centuries in September 2024 and both did so in defeats to Mark Allen. The Wizard of Wishaw got to 1,000 in an English Open defeat to the Pistol and the Ace in a British Open loss to the same man. With another 20 needed to reach four figures, Selby will not get there in Shenzhen this week, but will do this season, with big events to come before the end of 2026 including the Northern Ireland Open, International Championship, Champion of Champions and UK Championship. The Jester from Leicester has been really impressive so far this season, winning the China Open in August and reaching the British Open final earlier this month. ‘It’s amazing what confidence does, just in general,’ he said. ‘I’m confident with my game at the moment, I know that I’m playing some good stuff. When I get my chances I’m confident that I’m going to take them and today was one of those days. Selby landed a fourth China Open title this season (Picture: Getty Images) ‘The standard of snooker nowadays, if you’re not scoring when you get a chance you can’t be winning tournaments and competing at the back end. I seem to be doing that at the moment and long may it continue.’ There have been some big shocks already at the Shenzhen Open, with the likes of Zhao Xintong, O’Sullivan, Higgins and Mark Williams all falling early. Selby continues to look very strong, though, and will take on Stephen Maguire in the last 16 on Thursday. Zhao’s early defeat to Scott Donaldson gives hope to the chasing pack in the race to dethrone him as world number one in the near future, with Selby, Trump, Robertson and world champion Wu Yize all in the hunt. Stephen Hendry voices worry over snooker’s future in China
Stephen Hendry has a concern over the rise of snooker in China (Picture: Getty Images) Stephen Hendry feels snooker’s popularity in China could start to wane, saying there is a ‘slight danger of saturation’ after the sport’s explosion in the country since 2005. The snooker boom in China began over 20 years ago thanks to Ding Junhui’s spectacular emergence at the top of the game. The teenage Ding grabbed the attention of his homeland by winning the 2005 China Open, beating Hendry in the final. By the end of that year he had won the UK Championship, beating another legend in the final in Steve Davis, and sparked huge passion for the sport that had only been a very niche interest previously. There are now around 300,000 snooker clubs in China and more players have followed Ding to the top of the game, including reigning world champion Wu Yize and the man who became the first Chinese world champ last year, Zhao Xintong. A substantial amount of the professional tour is now based in the huge nation, with this week’s Shenzhen Open one of five ranking events on mainland China this season, while another, the World Grand Prix, is staged in Hong Kong. The non-ranking Shanghai Masters has also become a big event on the circuit. Phil has been reporting on snooker for over a decade The Shenzhen Open is a new event on the calendar and attracted big crowds on the first day of action on Monday, with World Snooker Tour reporting that approximately 3,800 tickets were sold for the evening session, which featured Zhao and Ronnie O’Sullivan. > A superb turnout in Shenzhen 🙌🏟️#ShenzhenOpen pic.twitter.com/7hB0UgRTak > > — WST (@WeAreWST) September 28, 2026 There are also huge numbers from China in terms of TV viewing figures, with WST stating of Zhao’s 2025 Crucible final win over Mark Williams: ‘The third session of the final alone was watched by 24.59 million unique viewers across China.’ There is no doubt that the sport is extremely popular in China, but Hendry says he has spotted evidence that interest is waning on one front. ‘I think there’s a slight danger of saturation in China, I actually do,’ the seven-time world champion said on WST’s Snooker Club podcast. ‘You see it on the other side of it, on the exhibition circuit out there. I wouldn’t say it’s drying up but players were getting absolute fortunes for playing exhibitions. The money, the appearance fees, these players were getting fortunes for one night’s work and those fees are coming down because, basically, it’s a saturation point. Wu Yize became China’s second world champion when he beat Shaun Murphy in the Sheffield final this year (Picture: Getty Images) ‘Although they [tournaments] are still huge, you see the support at the opening ceremonies, the fans come out, the fans love it. Snooker is very, very popular, but I just worry, are we getting too much of it? I don’t know.’ The interest from promoters in staging professional events does not appear to be on the slide, with the China Open returning to the calendar this season in style. The Chinese events were lost during the Covid pandemic and the China Open, which was traditionally the biggest in the country, was slow to return but was played in August for the first time since 2019. It returned in a new home of Taiyuan and with a huge prize fund of £1.2million, as Mark Selby picked up the winner’s cheque worth £250,000.
