The fascinating European island that’s 27°C in October and has £37 flights
From ancient ruins to immaculate beaches, this place has it all (Picture: Shutterstock / OleksandrSavchuk) Pine forests, waterfalls, sandy beaches and ancient villages. This is what awaits in Cyprus, a beautiful island country in the Mediterranean Sea. But you already know that. Cyprus has long been a popular holiday destination for Brits _and_ international tourists. In 2025, the nation welcomed a record-breaking 4.5 million visitors — a 12.2% increase compared to 2024. However, earlier this year, arrivals dropped sharply due to regional instability in the Middle East. And while tourism in Cyprus has all but returned to normal, it’s worth reminding travellers of everything the island has to offer. On top of a string of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and 27°C temperatures well into October, it also boasts an exciting culinary scene that blends Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern traditions. What’s not to love? Cyprus is the perfect October destination (Picture: Shutterstock / Balate.Dorin) ## What caused Cyprus’ tourism decline? First, the situation. Back in March, the US-Israel war on Iran and a drone strike near the British RAF base Akrotiri raised safety concerns across the Eastern Mediterranean. The strike caused travel chaos, with around 70% of schedules serving Cyprus disrupted or cancelled overnight. Hotel reservations followed suit, as summer bookings all but ground to a halt. Travel influencer Nastia, who lives in Cyprus and works in tourism, was on the ground during this time. She told **Metro** that, from what she personally witnessed, ‘tourism definitely dropped when the situation first started.’ According to Nastia, the first weeks of March saw a flurry of booking cancellations. > @nastiaontheisland > > Looking for the best beach bars in Cyprus? This hidden gem in Kapparis has one of the most beautiful sea views I’ve seen. Perfect for coffee, cocktails, lunch or just relaxing by the sea. Save this place for your next Cyprus trip! 🇨🇾 And if you’re planning a holiday in Ayia Napa, check out my 18-page travel guide with everything you need to know. Link in bio ❤️ #ayianapa #cyprus #protaras #cafe #beach > > ♬ Beach Party – BeatsByBaby ‘This included bookings for summer and even autumn, because people were scared and didn’t really know what to expect or whether the situation would escalate further,’ she explained. ‘I was worried at that time, because in the Ayia Napa and Protaras area, where I live, a huge number of people work in tourism and depend on tourists directly or indirectly, just like the Cypriot economy in general.’ Currently, the UK Foreign Office does not have active travel warnings for Cyprus, but it reminds travellers that ‘the situation in the Middle East remains unpredictable’. ## A perfect October holiday destination Cyprus is rich in fascinating culture. The island has been shaped by its strategic position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Over thousands of years, it has been conquered, settled, and influenced by many major civilisations, creating a layered heritage. Ancient Greek and Roman remnants can be found across archaeological sites such as the amphitheatre of Kourion and the mosaics of Paphos. Soak up the sun in Nicosia (Picture: Shutterstock / Tomasz Podolski) UNESCO-listed terraced churches in the Troodos Mountains showcase the Byzantine era. Meanwhile, the Ottoman era is alive and kicking in the form of Büyük Han, the largest caravanserai in Cyprus, in the old walled city of Nicosia, famously known as Europe’s last divided capital. History and architecture aside, though, Cyprus is an outdoor lovers’ dream. Dozens of beaches across the island regularly earn international Blue Flag eco-labels, from Fig Tree Bay in Protaras to Nissi Beach in party-central Ayia Napa. A 40-minute drive from that party city is Larnaca, aka the ‘city of peace.’ Hailed for its laid-back atmosphere and connection to Ancient Greek philosopher Zeno of Citium, it’s also home to Zenobia Wreck, a famous dive site from the 1980s. Elsewhere, take on one of Cyprus’ many scenic wooded trails past waterfalls like Caledonia Falls, or explore the Tombs of the Kings, 4th century BC underground burial sites carved out of solid rock near Paphos. More into your food and drink? Head to traditional mountain villages like Omodos for local wine-tasting, followed by sampling must-eat dishes such as Kleftiko, Souvla and Halloumi cheese. > @nastiaontheisland > > Do you know this place? #ayianapa #protaras #cyprus #tourist #summer > > ♬ original sound – DA TI ## Has Cyprus’ tourism industry recovered? The impact of regional tensions that Cyprus felt in March did not last long. And, when April came, ‘the weather started getting better, people saw that there wasn’t really any escalation, and things became calmer’, Nastia said. In May, she said the tourist flow ‘felt pretty similar to previous years’. Fast-forward to October, and Visit Cyprus has said tourism services are now operating normally, too. ‘At this moment I wouldn’t say I notice a significant decline anymore,’ Nastia added. Rather, she said holiday hotspots like Ayia Napa and Protaras are growing. Renovations are happening everywhere, new hotels and projects are being built, and the ‘tourist areas feel very alive.’ ## Getting to Cyprus There are plenty of direct flights to Cyprus from the UK. The route you take depends on the type of holiday you want. In October, Ryanair flies from London Stansted to Paphos for as little as £38. easyJet flies from Gatwick for around £47. Heading to Larnaca? Take a £61 Wizz Air from Gatwick. Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

‘Fish and Rice Cake’ guy opens up about former steroid use
‘Fish and rice cake’ icon Danny Andrews has opened up about his experience (Picture: Instagram) A former bodybuilder who went **viral** because of his bizarre diet claims taking steroids for ‘bigger biceps’ wasn’t worth it – as he’s now infertile. Danny Andrews, now 37, went viral for his strict diet of fish and rice cakes. His recollection of his regimented food intake, complete with his strong regional accent, made him a viral hit. The former bodybuilder has now opened up about his former steroid use and warned other young men against it. Danny said he began taking steroids in 2008 when he was 18 due to the pressures of bodybuilding. He’s now admitted he never expected the side effects would affect his future. But after realising he was only taking them because he was ‘insecure’, Danny stopped them five years later in 2013. Danny and his fiancée are attempting IVF due to side effects from his past steroid use (Picture: Instagram) But after young men reached out to him to get advice, he shared his experience online. He now admits it wasn’t worth it for ‘bigger biceps’ and now trains for longevity and health and is speaking out to raise awareness. Danny said: ‘I realised I was taking them because I was insecure and wanted to be bigger and more muscular. ‘Was it worth it for a bigger bicep to not have a family when you’re older? It wasn’t worth it. I train for longevity and try to keep healthy and fit.’ ‘I just want to create awareness that men are not alone because they will not talk about it. It is even worse now for young lads because they’ve got the pressure of social media and steroids are so accessible. ‘You hear all the benefits but you don’t hear all the side effects, and when you do, you don’t think it will ever happen to you. I’m worried about young lads who take them. You can get it all online, it’s crazy.’ Danny still trains, but for health and longevity – not size or competition (Picture: Instagram) Danny said that after trying to start a family for two years, he went to his GP for a semen analysis in 2015. Shocked, Danny claims doctors told him he was infertile due to steroids, which affected the mobility of his sperm, and that it was ‘highly unlikely’ for him to have children naturally. Danny, from Preston, Lancashire, said: ‘People wouldn’t understand; they’d joke and say, ‘you can have one of my kids’. Nobody understood that a man would want kids; I used to feel like my body was broken. ‘The doctors said it was because of the steroids. I cried my eyes out, they said it’s highly unlikely I will have kids naturally.’ Now engaged to Sadie Bass after meeting on E4 dating show Love Triangle, Danny’s tried medication and freezing his sperm and is due to start IVF soon with his partner. His partner Sadie, a 30-year-old influencer, said: ‘I felt bad for him because he had said he really wants to be a dad and have a family. When we were chatting, he was checking that I also wanted kids. ‘It was quite an emotional moment, and I was impressed he opened up, and it made him more attractive because he was being open and vulnerable. If anything, it made me feel more connected to him. I like the person for who they are, not for whether we’re going to have kids or not.’ ******Get in touch with our news team by emailing us atwebnews@metro.co.uk.****** **For more stories like this,** check our news page. Toddler pulls loaded handgun from backpack at nursery
Officers responded to the Children’s World Early Learning Center on Monday morning and collected the firearm (Picture: Childrens World Early Learning – Canton/Facebook) **A police officer is facing jail in the US after their toddler pulled a loaded gun out at nursery.** The terrifying incident happened at Childrens World Early Learning Center in Canton, Detroit, on Monday. Luckily, a quick-thinking member of staff saw the youngster pull it from a rucksack and disarmed them before anyone was hurt. Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy said it was ‘shocking’ to see CCTV footage of the toddler brandishing the gun. He said one of the child’s parents is a police officer in the Detroit area but did not describe the gun involved as a work firearm. Chief Bialy said he did not believe there was any ‘ill intent’ behind the incident but stressed the need to ensure guns are kept safe and out of children’s reach. He said: ‘We have to understand where our firearms are, and we have a duty to make sure that we keep them secure. ‘The law is very clear. If a child is present or you anticipate a child being present, you have to take those precautions.’ Under Michigan law, firearms must be locked up at home when children are present. The penalties depend on the facts of each case, but they are greatly enhanced if a gun is fired and someone is wounded or killed. A man from Newaygo County is serving more than three years in prison after his 5-year-old grandson was fatally shot by another child who got access to a shotgun. The daycare said in a statement: ‘We pride ourselves on being one of the safest centers in the Canton area. It is our priority. ‘Although this incident was out of our control, we are very proud of our staff and especially the teacher who responded so quickly.’ ******Get in touch with our news team by emailing us atwebnews@metro.co.uk.****** **For more stories like this,** check our news page. Narcos run in fear from Mexico’s newest soldier – a Chihuahua named Comando
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page When searching for animals to aid their operations, most militaries and national guards opt for German Shepherds and other large pooches. But Mexico’s National Guard have chosen an 8-inch-tall, 15-pound kitted-out Chihuahua named Comando. The small dog was adopted around six months ago while still a puppy after his elderly owners were unable to continue caring for him. Now, Comando is training to assist with search-and-rescue work while also serving as an unofficial mascot for the National Guard. He has his own fitted vest, miniature goggles and a head-mounted camera to assist in his very important work. The brave little pup already has a miniature armour kit (Picture: Reuters) ## Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's **News Updates** newsletter or get **Breaking News** alerts the moment it happens. He’s also shown bravery already – during a training session, Comando jumped into action and passed an obstacle course while a fully trained larger dog sat frozen. Lieutenant Debora Hernandez said that Comando is reminding many that ‘beneath the uniform, we are human beings.’ Though his role (and size) is small, his service is sure to aid the National Guard as it continues to fight against organised crime in the country. Cartels are dotted across Mexico, and have been fighting turf wars and for control of drug supply from Sinaloa to the Gulf for decades. Comando is small but mighty (Picture: Reuters) Earlier this year, an influx of violence across Mexico after the death of drug lord ‘El Mencho’ brought cartels back into the global spotlight. Forced disappearances, murders in broad daylight and mass graves have become common as the cartels fight to defend their ‘turf’ and protect drug supplies. Mexico’s drug war began as a civil war inside the cartels, triggered by the 1989 arrest of ‘the Godfather’, Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, for the torture and murder of an American agent. Current Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, like her predecessor, has criticised the ‘kingpin’ strategy of previous administrations that took out cartel leaders only to trigger explosions of violence as cartels fractured. While she has remained popular in Mexico, security is a persistent concern, and she has been under tremendous pressure to show results against drug trafficking. ******Get in touch with our news team by emailing us atwebnews@metro.co.uk.****** **For more stories like this,** check our news page. Nato blasts ‘irresponsible’ Russia rhetoric after nuclear arsenal threat
Russia threatened to deploy nuclear weapons if Kaliningrad was threatened (Picture: Reuters) NATO has responded to Russia’s outright threat to deploy nuclear weapons if Kaliningrad is ‘threatened’ by the alliance. Russia addressed what it called ‘threats’ to its Baltic enclave from NATO and said in a statement that the alliance was being ‘dangerous and reckless’. ‘Russia will be ready to use the entire arsenal of forces and capabilities at its disposal, including nuclear weapons, to defend its territory should Nato countries undertake any attempt aimed at isolating the Kaliningrad Region from the rest of the country,’ a letter to NATO read. NATO responded to Moscow directly after the shocking letter and slammed Russia for its threats, while asking Putin to end the war in Ukraine. ‘We strongly denounce the threat of force, including any irresponsible nuclear rhetoric,’ NATO wrote. Kaliningrad neighbours multiple NATO countries (Picture: Getty) ‘We have sent a response, noting that NATO is a defensive Alliance and none of our activities or exercises pose a risk to any part of Russia. ‘We strongly denounce the threat of force, including any irresponsible nuclear rhetoric.’ Russia has repeatedly threatened the use of nuclear weapons if NATO and other European countries continue to ‘threaten’ its territory. This week, Russia warned against any attempts to target its Baltic Sea enclave following a fictional plot line featured in a new British miniseries. Putin’s Russia appears to have been riled up by a new Sky One miniseries The Wargame. The five-part show, which premiered last week, centres around a fictional Russian attack against the UK and the ensuing hostilities. When Britain is left to fend for itself in the series, the PM orders a retaliatory attack on Murmansk and Kaliningrad, a strategically valuable pocket of Russian territory nestled between Poland and Lithuania in real life. In a scathing post, the Russian UK embassy wrote on its official Telegram channel: ‘We have noted an article in The i Paper on Kaliningrad, which suggests, among other things, that NATO could blockade the region or ‘de-recognise Russian sovereignty’. The prospect of a hypothetical strike is also explored in Sky News’ recent mini-series The Wargame. ‘Those advocating plans to blockade or strike Kaliningrad should have no illusions about the consequences. Any British or NATO military action against Russian territory would be met with a response using all means at Russia’s disposal, including nuclear weapons. ‘Russia has repeatedly made clear that it neither seeks confrontation with NATO and Europe nor intends to attack them. But should anyone choose to unleash such a conflict, they must be under no illusion that Russia will respond accordingly.’ ******Get in touch with our news team by emailing us atwebnews@metro.co.uk.****** **For more stories like this,** check our news page. Teenager admits trying to have sex with Shetland pony named Cheeky
Dressed in a light-grey suit jacket paired with light-grey Hollister jeans, Thomas Mikaelson, 19, made his first appearance at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday (Picture: MEN Media) **A teenage boy has admitted trying to have sex with a Shetland pony called Cheeky.** Thomas Mikaelson, 19, covered his face as he appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to allow sexual penetration by a living animal. It relates to an incident at Gledhill Farm in Almondbury, near Huddersfield, on August 24 last year. The pervert denied another charge of recklessly trespassing to commit a relevant sexual offence. Prosecutor Robert Galley told the court the pleas were acceptable and that he had been instructed to invite the second charge to lie on file. Judge Phillips KC said: ‘The farmer concerned has supplied a victim impact statement and I think that he ought to be given the opportunity of attending court at sentencing. ‘It clearly has had an impact in more than one respect upon the farm and those involved in its operation.’ He told Mikaelson: ‘You pleaded guilty to the offence at count one. I’m not going to pass sentence today. Your case will be listed for sentence on November 17. Mikaelson was bailed with instructions to attend court on that date. The judge added: ‘The fact I’m adjourning the sentence in order for the Probation Service to prepare a report on you to address the risk you pose to the public in future should not be taken by you as an indication of what the sentence will be.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Dame Esther Rantzen dies aged 86, heartbroken family announce
Dame Esther has become a leading voice for the assisted dying bill in England and Wales (Picture: Jonathan Brady/PA Wire) Dame Esther Rantzen has died aged 86 after years of campaigning to implement assisted dying in the UK. The TV broadcaster was called the ‘most wonderful woman’ by her heartbroken family as they announced her death on Wednesday. Dame Rantzen, who became a household name fronting That’s Life! from 1973 – 1994, revealed she didn’t have long to live after a lung cancer diagnosis in February. The campaigner shared that the ‘new miracle drug’ she has been using for her cancer treatment has ‘stopped working’, adding: ‘I’m still here. Not for much longer.’ She continued in The Observer: ‘I’m definitely not going to live long enough to see the assisted dying bill become law. ## Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's **News Updates** newsletter or get **Breaking News** alerts the moment it happens. ‘So if my life becomes unbearably painful and I long for a quick, pain-free death, I will have to go to Dignitas in Switzerland, alone.’ Dame Esther was an absolute favourite on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! (Picture: ITV/Shutterstock) The outspoken campaigner was always open about her own health journey inspiring others going through the same traumatic diagnosis. Dame Esther, described it as a ‘tragic day’ when MPs rejected plans to legalise assisted dying for terminally ill adults in England and Wales earlier this month. Speaking before the vote, she said: ‘Why did I not buzz off to Zurich as I had planned when my life became unbearable? ‘Unfortunately, when I was strong enough to make the flight and go to Dignitas, my life was not unbearably painful, indeed I was able to relax in my beloved cottage in the New Forest. ‘Obviously, I would prefer that my end could be swift and painless and I could ask for help now I’m dying. But I can’t. ‘I knew it would be like this if I died in this country because the current criminal law preventing anyone to help me shorten my death is messy and cruel.’ Dame Esther entered the I’m A Celebrity jungle in 2008 where she took up a strong maternal role in camp and developed a strong friendship with Timmy Mallet. She was given DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 2015 for services to children and older people. She was married to broadcaster Desmond Wilcox and had three children, including broadcaster Rebecca Wilcox. More than 43,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year in the UK,’ according to the NHS website. Detective admits upskirting teenage girl with his phone
Detective Constable Lee Harshey-Jones, 45, was previously hailed for his work as a lead investigator in the horrific murder of two-year-old Ethan Ives-Griffiths (Picture: Wales News Service) **A detective has admitted upskirting a teenage girl.** Lee Harshey-Jones, 45, admitted a count of voyeurism when he appeared at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. The detective constable was the lead investigator in the case of two-year-old Ethan Ives-Griffiths, who was murdered by his grandparents, Michael and Kerry Ives, in 2021. Jurors were visibly upset at points during the trial last year. CCTV was played showing Michael Ives carrying Ethan by the top of his arm and appearing to punch him after putting him in a car seat. Harshey-Jones was arrested over the incident in Colwyn Bay, Conwy, on June 11 and was later suspended by his employers North Wales Police. ## Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's **News Updates** newsletter or get **Breaking News** alerts the moment it happens. The detective also pleaded guilty to intending to pervert the course of justice when he factory-set his phone in an attempt to conceal evidence from criminal investigations. He pleaded guilty to a third charge of corrupt or improper use of police powers and privileges by viewing an internal log of the incident. Ryan Donoghue, defending, asked for a pre-sentence report for his client, who he said was of previous good character. Conditional bail for Harshey-Jones was extended until his sentencing date on November 19 at Chester Crown Court. Recorder Mark Ford KC told him: ‘The fact that I have adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report should not be taken by you as any indication to you as to what sentence will be passed on these serious counts.’ Following Harshey-Jones’s court appearance on Wednesday, North Wales Police said the former officer had resigned from the force. The 3 best shoulder season destinations that aren’t too popular (yet)
A holiday without the crowds? Welcome to shoulder season (Picture: Getty Images) September is a funny old month. One day, the sun is shining, and it feels like summer is still hanging on. The next it’s grey and miserable, and you’re boiling the kettle for a hot water bottle. So it’s no surprise more people are ditching the hot-and-cold weather for warmer climes before winter officially sets in. Coined ‘Super September’ by ABTA in its Travel Trends 2026 report, it’s when people swap the peak summer months for an early autumn getaway. While not everyone can jump on the trend (think parents with school-age children), those who can are reaping the shoulder season rewards of affordable prices and fewer crowds. Since 2023, ABTA has found that more travellers are steadily choosing September as their holiday month. In 2025, almost a quarter (24%) said they planned to take a trip that month, up from 17% two years earlier. Meanwhile, travel networks indicate that global autumn hotel reservations are up 55% for September, meaning the season is no longer a low-demand, last-minute option. > @travelwithusc > > We’ve become convinced that May, September & October are actually the sweet spots for exploring Europe! Would you choose a euro summer, or visit during shoulder season? #europetravel #europetraveltips #shoulderseason #citybreaks #creatorsearchinsights > > ♬ suono originale – tayloewe But as the month comes to a close and holidaymakers return home, it’s got us thinking: shoulder season isn’t just restricted to September. October is just as good a time to go abroad, and still boasts the same off-peak benefits. Here, **Metro** has rounded up 3 of the best destinations for an October getaway that aren’t too popular… yet. ## Menorca, Balearic Islands There’s no denying the Balearic Islands are one of Spain’s most beloved holiday hotspots. Each year, more than 15 million international tourists flock to the archipelago, with the majority heading to Mallorca and Ibiza. However, over the last year, both have been hit hard by overtourism and severe flooding. Plus, due to high demand, the islands have also seen significant price hikes. But don’t write the Balearics off just yet, as Mallorca’s smaller neighbour, Menorca, could provide the answers. Menorca is Mallorca’s quieter neighbour (Picture: Shutterstock / Kirk Fisher) The island, which boasts UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, receives a much smaller 1.77 million visitors compared to Mallorca’s 13.5 million and Ibiza’s 3.7 million. It’s also complete with stunning scenery, rich history and great food. For example, there are over 100 beaches, pretty whitewashed villages with terracotta roofs, and the world’s largest concentration of prehistoric monuments from Talayotic culture. In simpler words, the latter is the society that existed in the easternmost Balearic Islands during the Iron Age. > @kelseyinlondon > > 🇪🇸 11 Places to visit in Menorca ⬇️⁣ ⁣ 🇪🇸 Get my FREE Menorca Travel Guide at menorca.kelseyinlondon.com (link in bio) which includes: ☀️Places to visit 🏖️ Best beaches 🍽️ Best restaurants ⭐️ Fun activities 🏩 Hotel recommendations 📆 Best time to visit ✅ Example Itinerary 🚗 How to get around + a saveable Google Map with all locations pinned📍⁣ ⁣ 1. Rather than boozy beach clubs in Ibiza (which we’re not denying can be a great laugh), hike one of the many ancient trails, including the Camí de Cavalls, an 186 km coastal route that encircles the island. ## Menorca flights, accommodation and weather In October, Menorca sees average daytime highs of around 23°C. That’s beach weather in the day, and a light jacket in the evening. As for flights, Ryanair flies from London Stansted to Menorca’s capital, Mahon, for as little as £15. Accommodation is cheap, too. In October, four-star resorts like the Ibizan-style Prinsotel La Caleta have rooms for £72. ## Albania You’ve heard the horror stories of Albania in summer: tourists sardined on packed-out Ksamil and Sarandë beaches, busy roads, and infrastructure strain. Peak season visitor numbers have spiked thanks to TikTok, climbing past 10 million annually and surpassing the country’s total population. There’ll be no sunbed wars in October (Picture: Shutterstock / Alp Galip) However, for those wanting to experience the charm of Albania without contributing to overtourism, October could be the perfect month. You can also visit the popular resort villages on the southern Albanian Riviera — which have been coined the Maldives of the Mediterranean —without the guilt. But if you’re more interested in sightseeing than sunbathing, there are plenty of other cities and towns across the country to explore. Expect mild daytime highs of 21°C and cooler nights dropping to 13°C. Ryanair operates flights from London Stansted to Tirana for around £20 throughout the whole of October, while accommodation isn’t much more. Stay in the beachfront four-star King Hotel Ksmil for just £46 per night, or grab a room in Tirana’s Doanesia Premium Hotel & Spa for £66. ## Naples, Italy Food lovers, it’s very important that you visit Naples at least once in your life. The southern Italian city, and capital of Campania, is widely considered a culinary capital. Seriously, it was crowned the world’s best city for food in 2024. If it’s a city break you’re after, experience the cool chaos of Naples (Picture: Getty Images) Naples is the birthplace of pizza, while Neapolitan pizza-making is even recognised as a UNESCO cultural heritage. The best restaurants to sample the city’s signature dish include Pizzeria Brandi (where pizza is thought to have originated) and Pizzaioli Veraci. At both joints, a traditional Margherita costs around €7 (£6). Once you’ve had your fill, no trip to Naples is complete without visiting the Spanish Quarter, a former no-go area once under mob rule. Today, the story is different, and you’ll find Latin American restaurants with Vespas strewn out front and the city’s brilliantly garish Maradona shrine. There’s ancient history, too. However, in October, the narrow streets are no longer sticky and humid, but a more pleasant 23°C. Ryanair also flies to the Italian city from London Luton for just £20, while easyJet flies from Gatwick for £42. As for where to stay, the four-star Caravaggio Hotel has rooms available for £73. Meanwhile, at IL FIORE D’ORO LUXURY near the Central Station, rates start from £81. Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

So that’s what Burnhamism is all about
Prime Minister Andy Burnham delivering his keynote speech during the Labour Party Conference (Picture: Peter Byrne/PA Wire) If you heard a faint fizzing sound around 2.30pm yesterday, it may have been your local economist popping open a celebratory bottle of Champagne. That was the moment Andy Burnham did something in his speech to Labour conference that, even 24 hours beforehand, felt politically impossible – he announced the end of the **state pension triple lock**. Actually, not even that. He signalled that Labour would put an adjustment to the triple lock in its party manifesto at the next election, with the savings going towards the cost of the **planned National Care Service**. It wouldn’t come into effect until April 2030. Currently, the annual rise in the state pension is decided by the highest figure out of 2.5%, the inflation rate, and wage growth. Under the change, the automatic link to wages would be dumped. So, the state pension would still rise by a minimum of 2.5% each year and more in times of high inflation. But it wouldn’t grow faster than earnings – which makes sense, economists argue, since it’s the taxes on those earnings that fund the state pension. There are arguments to be had over whether Burnham’s plan is the best possible solution to the triple lock quandary, and there’s already widespread scepticism of the suggestion that the savings would make much of a dent in the mammoth cost of a National Care Service. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page But the reason Champagne corks may have been flying yesterday is that a party leader willingly launched a debate that was widely thought to be too toxic to touch. The triple lock is maligned by many economists but the public quite like it – after all, it’s hard to argue against giving more money to people in their old age. That’s resulted in a situation where all the major parties (including Labour, in its 2024 election manifesto) back the policy, despite warnings about its unsustainability. ## Get more political analysis direct to your inbox Want to understand more about how wild world of British politics works and how the changes made in Parliament affect your life? Craig Munro In Brighton last week, I watched as Lib Dem leader **Sir Ed Davey argued in favour of the triple lock on a conference stage** even as a majority of his own party members put their hands up to say they’d end it. Reform UK and the Tories also threw their weight behind the existing system immediately after Burnham’s speech, arguing the PM was throwing pensioners under the bus. Conventional Westminster wisdom dictates that this is the way to play it: respond to any proposals to end the triple lock by calling it an attack on older people and reap the electoral rewards. So, imagine my amazement when I saw a **YouGov poll** last night that found 48% of Brits supported reducing the strength of the triple lock to help fund a National Care Service, compared to 28% who were opposed. Could it be that the conventional Westminster wisdom was overblown all along? POLL Poll ### Are you in favour of 'adjusting' the triple lock? * YesCheck * NoCheck * I'm not sureCheck Yesterday, I wrote about the **experience of sitting in the room for Burnham’s remarkable speech**. I’m not sure we’re appreciating yet just how big an effect that hour-long address will have on politics for years to come. Yes, it exploded the debate about the triple lock – might the other parties eventually have to change their approach, for fear of being portrayed as economically naïve? But it also did the same for several other issues. My mind immediately goes to the EU (with Burnham now suggesting rejoining may be on the cards) and electoral reform (with potential Labour backing for a transformative new voting system). These long-suppressed arguments have been launched to the surface, and Burnham seems eager to have them. Even before any of his plans are put into action, the transformation has begun. The underweight animals, including 80 Springer Spaniels and four Patterdale Terriers, were rescued after being found in shocking conditions. They had to be nursed back to health and taught how to walk on a lead after being found in shocking conditions. A massive rescue took place on April 18 last year in the town of Tickhill, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire. It was discovered that the dogs had been living in a property caked in dog excrement and dirt. ## Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's **News Updates** newsletter or get **Breaking News** alerts the moment it happens. The haunting sign that you’re days from death, according to end-of-life doctor
Dr Christopher Kerr revealed a very telling sign that someone could be about to die (Picture: The Oprah Podcast) There are very few things you can be certain of in life — but one of those is that, one day, it will come to an end. Yep, however much you might try to cheat death, it comes to us all eventually. But, despite all the suggestions of life flashing before your eyes, can anyone really know with accuracy when their time might be up? Well, you might not be able to predict the exact moment of death but there are certain haunting signs which suggest that you could be about to shuffle off this mortal coil, with one end-of-life doctor revealing a common experience many of his patients have in the days before their death. According to Dr Christopher Kerr, a hospice and palliative care physician based in Buffalo, New York, many people who are close to the end have visions of deceased loved ones, or those who cared for them during their lives. And speaking in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, he said that those patients are convinced that what they see is no hallucination. He revealed his patients’ experiences to The Oprah Podcast (Picture: The Oprah Podcast) ‘Very little is said between the person in the dream and the dreamer, but everything seems to be understood,’ Dr Kerr explained. ‘And what I think is most fascinating, I’ve been doing it for 27 years. I’ve never had a patient ask me, “What do you think this means?”‘ He went on to explain that those patients who were dying knew which deceased loved ones had visited them and that those they might have had a difficult relationship with in life were not there. And a majority of those he spoke to claimed the interaction was positive, and provided people with reassurance of what would be waiting for them in the afterlife. Often the visions are of people that the dying person has unfinished business with (Picture: Shutterstock / sfam_photo) Dr Kerr, who has also authored the book Death Is But A Dream, based on 1,500 interviews with patients before they died, highlighted a specific example during the interview, which aired on The Oprah Podcast in July 2026. He spokeof a woman named Julie, whose mother Jean began seeing her own mother sitting in a chair in the room they were in. She recalled her mum saying: ‘Mom is sitting in the chair across the room and she is waiting for me, and she wants me to know that she’s going to be there for me.’ Jean’s account also saw her receive visits from her father, uncle and brother-in-law — and that she patched up a rocky relationship with her own mother before her death. Dying is a gradual process, according to Dr Kerr (Picture Shutterstock / UfaBizPhoto) She said of the encounters: ‘I was lying in bed, and people were walking very slowly by me. The right-hand side I didn’t know, but they were all very friendly, and they touched my arm or my hand when they went by. And the other side were people that I knew.’ While Dr Kerr was unable to say whether the visions were real or not, he noted that many of them seemed to address an unresolved issue in that person’s life, and that these visits gave patients the chance for ‘spiritual’ healing and closure before they passed away. ‘In the end, there’s this you’re almost put back together by being brought back to family,’ he explained. ‘You certainly carry loss. You’ve lost people who are lingering in your heart, and they come back to you. And so that’s a form of healing.’ He went on to explain that dying is a gradual process, and for most people death comes as part of a deepening sleep rather than when they are awake and alert. ‘People don’t die in an awake state. They die in the depths of sleep. And you can’t get there unless you’re comfortable. And everybody seems to have an understanding of that from a physical perspective,’ Dr Kerr explained. ‘But psychologically, existentially, you also have to find peace.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Hundreds of prisoners are due to walk free tomorrow
The controversial scheme has been expanded (Picture: Getty) Hundreds of prisoners are due to walk free from jail on Thursday in the first wave of the Government’s controversial expanded early release scheme. Some 5,000 prisoners are scheduled to be released in stages over the next year, down from 6,000, after ministers intervened to exempt rapists and the most serious child sex offenders. Several hundred people are likely to be released on October 1 as part of the first phase of the expanded scheme, with more to follow in subsequent months. The plan to free up capacity in the overcrowded male prison estate comes as figures show the number of people behind bars has jumped by more than 1,700 in the past three months. The prison population of England and Wales stood at 87,499 on Monday, according to weekly data published by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). This is up from 85,761 on June 29 – a rise of 1,738, or 2%. ## Make sense of the mad world of British politics Get analysis of the latest stories direct to your inbox from Metro’s Senior Politics Reporter Craig Munro. Sign up here. 5,000 prisoners will be released in stages beginning tomorrow (Picture: Getty) Ministers say the expanded early release scheme is needed to prevent the justice system from collapsing, after a summer when the issue dominated news headlines. Criminals will be excluded from the scheme if they have been jailed for a range of offences, including members of child grooming gangs convicted of indecent assault. Prisoners guilty of manslaughter will also be excluded, meaning the killers of Pc Andrew Harper, who died in the line of duty in 2019, will not be eligible. Prime Minister Andy Burnham faced significant backlash for his initial plans to overhaul the scheme, which would have seen Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole, who were convicted of Pc Harper’s manslaughter in 2020, eligible for early release from next year. Justice Secretary Alex Norris has apologised to victims who faced a summer of uncertainty as the Government made a number of changes to the plans. The expansion of the scheme is happening as a result of the 2026 Sentencing Act, which allows ministers to reduce the point at which certain prisoners can be freed from 40% of a fixed-term sentence to a third. The total prison population of England and Wales is now 1,022 below the record high of 88,521, which was reached on September 6 2024 in the wake of the public disorder that followed the Southport killings earlier that year. The Government launched the early release scheme just four days later, on September 10 2024. Images of prisoners celebrating their early release caused public anger in the following weeks. Inmate Daniel Dowling-Brooks said ‘big up Keir Starmer’ as he was picked up in a convoy of a white Bentley and black Mercedes G-Wagon outside HMP Swaleside in Kent in October 2024. Another prisoner at the same jail was welcomed with an embrace as he was picked up in a black Rolls-Royce by a group of men in matching hoodies. A total of 70,066 prisoners had been released under the scheme up to the end of March 2026, according to the latest MoJ data. Prison numbers fell sharply in the weeks after the scheme was launched, but started climbing again in early 2025 and have since fluctuated mostly between 86,000 and 88,000. The current scheme is not the first of its kind. Under a separate process introduced by the previous Conservative government, 13,325 prisoners in England and Wales were freed early between October 17 2023 and September 9 2024. ******Get in touch with our news team by emailing us atwebnews@metro.co.uk.****** **For more stories like this,** check our news page. Tech boss says being evil is ‘actually good’ with bizarre car analogy
Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel compared being evil to being like a ‘Ferrari’ (Picture: EPA) A tech boss has claimed being evil is ‘not bad’ in a bizarre interview and illustrated his theory with cars. Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel caused a stir online after saying in a recent interview that evil is ‘actually kind of good’. Speaking with Mathias Döpfner, CEO of the media group Axel Springer, the billionaire venture capitalist was asked about whether AI is positive or negative for humans. He said ‘I’m going to get in trouble for what I’m about to say, but I think we moralise way too much.’ Later in the interview, he said: ‘If you’re evil, you’re at least competent. ## Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's **News Updates** newsletter or get **Breaking News** alerts the moment it happens. ‘And if you’re evil, you’re not bad and therefore maybe you’re actually kind of good because you’re at least getting something done.’ Thiel came up with some odd analogies to illustrate his point (Picture: Nordin Catic/Getty Images for The Cambridge Union) The AI investor used two bizarre analogies to explain his ‘evil’ theory, comparing humans first to cars and secondly to the book of Faust, a doctor who sells his soul to the devil. First, the Palantir boss said: ‘A Ferrari is an evil car because it doesn’t get many miles per gallon. ‘A trabby is a bad car; it’s less good than a golf car.’ Then came the literature lesson. Thiel continued: ‘Faust is a fake scientist; he’s sort of like a magician, a fake alchemist, and it’s bad science, and he goes straight to hell. ‘In Goethe’s Faust, he has a pact with the devil, and he gets his knowledge by morally dubious means, but it still always works out for the best and Goethe’s Faust gets redeemed. ‘It’s better to be good than evil, I want to be very clear, but you know I prefer Goethe’s Faust to Marlowe’s.’ Thiel previously wrote an article claiming freedom and democracy are not compatible (Picture: EPA) Thiel went on to say the real problems are ‘99%’ of businesses, companies, people and political leaders who are ‘totally incompetent’ and therefore ‘not even evil’. Döpfner then asked Thiel about an article he wrote in 2009 in which he claimed that he stopped believing freedom and democracy are compatible. The Palantir co-founder explained that he issued a correction to the article two weeks after it was published and clarified it was directed at ‘libertarians’ who put too much faith in politics. He said: ‘I don’t think democracy will go anywhere and what I was arguing for was a certain depoliticisation, a de-intensification of politics’. Earlier in the year, Sadiq Khan blocked a £50,000,000 deal between the Met Police and Palantir due to the company’s links with ICE in the US and Israeli attacks in Gaza and Lebanon. Palantir already has contracts worth hundreds of millions of pounds with NHS England and the Ministry of Defence, respectively. I was an extra in Digger – this is what Tom Cruise is really like on set
Tom Cruise’s Digger is undeniably one of the year’s most talked-about yet polarising films of the year (Picture: PA) **Speaking about Digger in any capacity feels like a Mission: Impossible.** I make no apologies for the pun. So much has been said about Tom Cruise’s likely Oscars contender and yet, at the same time, so little, thanks to Warner Bros. sternly warning against any spoiler leaks to protect the big plot twist. Even with the exact details under wraps, critics have made their feelings clear, with the satirical black comedy being described as Marmite – you’ll either love or loathe it – and the film earning a fairly low 52% on Rotten Tomatoes. One person who knows Digger better than most is Umnia El-Neil, who was one of the lucky few to be an extra in the blockbuster. She didn’t have to audition for the small role and had no clue that cinema legend Cruise, 64, was the lead star in this mysterious film with the code name Judy. Even speaking to Umnia feels like a satire in itself – we’re having to note spoilers in her quotes to avoid giving away the big reveal. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page ‘There had been talks for months of this film called Judy and how people were [spoiler] at Tom Cruise for days on end, and how difficult that had been,’ Umnia told **Metro**. ‘I was told there’s a week of filming with big [spoiler] scenes, and you can’t say anything to anyone because this is the big spoiler of the film.’ For Umnia, it was a win-win situation. She’d get a nice chunk of money and the opportunity to work with ‘great filmmaker’ Alejandro G. Iñárritu. They say never meet your heroes, but Umnia could not speak more highly of Cruise, who has earned a reputation for being incredibly intense yet courteous on set. ‘People don’t believe me when I say this, but he’s such a consummate professional. So nice, so kind,’ the actress and singer insisted. ‘After each take, [he’d say]: “Thank you guys so much. I really appreciate you. You guys are working so hard. You’re giving off energy, and we really feel it up here, so thank you.” He’s such a great guy to work alongside even though we were extras. ‘He was really considerate of our time and our energy. You just got the sense he was really fun to work with.’ Umnia El-Neil was one of the extras lucky enough to earn a spot on the Digger set (Picture: Umnia El-Neil) She added: ‘It was quite intense all day and Tom would get a seat off stage and sit there with his parka on and wait for the next take, sitting in the room with everyone else. It was brilliant.’ It’s no secret that Cruise has undergone an extreme transformation for his role as Digger Rockwell, using full prosthetics to age him. However, to stop his makeover from melting in the summer heat, the set at Pinewood Studios had to be ‘very, very cold’ and left them ‘freezing the whole time.’ The extras were told very little about the wider story of Digger despite their involvement in the film, causing rumours to consume the set. ‘They never told us anything officially, but with 400 people in the room, word gets around,’ Umnia shared. ‘“Judy’s the name of an iceberg, he’s an oil guy, there’s a president…” It was a whisper network and everyone was exchanging spoilers under the table. ‘I assumed filming it that we were the twist. So when I watched it last night, I was shocked that [spoiler] happens in the first act. ‘[I didn’t realise] that we become less of a twist and more of a gut punch.’ Digger might have struggled to win over all the critics, but Umnia stands by the ‘masterpiece.’ Cruise is likely contending for an Oscar nomination for his wacky performance as the oil tycoon (Picture: Warner Bros. Pictures via AP) ‘I loved it! I actually genuinely did love the film and didn’t think I was going to. I thought it was going to end up being too on-the-nose. I thought it was a very brilliant commentary and nice to have presented in such a gorgeously shot film,’ she said. Aware of the scepticism, the actress insisted: ‘Warner Bros. has not got a gun to my head – I think the film benefits from a second watch knowing the ending. ‘If people just interpret it as just being a film about how terrible climate change is, or how terrible billionaires are, that’s a bit reductive.’ Umnia, who has also appeared as an extra in Apple TV+ series Silo, would not reveal exactly how much she was paid to be an extra in Digger, but disclosed that it was enough to pay bills and, more importantly, fund her own project. ‘My short film series that I filmed in my kitchen, I credit being able to do that financially [to Digger],’ she revealed proudly. ‘I tell people Tom Cruise is the reason I’m able to make short films in my kitchen. That money was instrumental enough that I was able to provide enough stability to do that with a lot of the people I’ve met on the set.’ **_Digger arrives in UK cinemas on Friday._** Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

There’s ‘no evidence’ Lindsay Clancy killed her three children, her lawyer claims
Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer Kevin Reddington is now claiming that there’s ‘no evidence’ she killed her three children (Picture: AFP/Getty Images) Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer has asked a judge to throw out the case, claiming there’s ‘no evidence’ that she was actually responsible for killing her three children. Kevin Reddington said the entire case was ‘based on speculation’ as he challenged the prosecution at Tuesday’s hearing. The argument appears to mark a significant change of tack for the defence. Her lawyers had previously argued that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was over-medicated, without disputing that she killed the children. Reddington speaks to Clancy during her trial (Picture: Greg Derr/Pool The Patriot Ledger) Clancy was charged with three counts of first-degree murder after her daughter Cora, five, son Dawson, three, and eight-month-old son Callan were strangled to death. The children died in the basement of the family’s home near Boston, Massachusetts, on January 24, 2023. Her six-week televised court case ended in a mistrial earlier in September after one juror refused to acquit her. The jury’s failure to reach a unanimous verdict left open the possibility of a second trial. But at the first hearing since the mistrial, Reddington questioned whether prosecutors had proved Clancy killed the children at all, The Telegraph reports. He told the court in Plymouth, Massachusetts, there wasn’t enough evidence ‘that this woman killed those children’. Clancy looks on as her six-week trial ends without a verdict after the jury fails to reach a unanimous decision (Picture: REUTERS) ‘Where is the admission? Where does she say that she did this? Where is the evidence that she did this?’ he asked. He also repeated his argument that Clancy was psychotic and delusional at the time of the deaths. Reddington attacked parts of the police investigation as ‘woefully deficient’ and ‘ridiculous’. He said that his client had no recollection of killing her children. He filed a motion asking Judge William Sullivan to step in and rule Clancy ‘not guilty’. If granted, it would mean she wouldn’t face a second trial. Reddington reacts to the mistrial ruling (Picture: REUTERS) Prosecutors’ response was blunt. They called the claims ‘laughable’. They said that the evidence clearly showed Clancy was the only adult at home with the children when they were killed. Her husband Patrick had left to run errands, according to his testimony. Surveillance footage and phone records corroborate his account of being away from the house. Shanan Buckingham, for the prosecution, said: ‘She’s the only one in the home with three young children, her husband testified under oath he left the house, went to [run] errands. ‘He’s on video surveillance at the time these murders occurred.’ Prosecutors also said that the evidence showed that Clancy attempted to take her own life on the night of the deaths. She was left paralysed from the waist down. Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder over the deaths of her daughter Cora and sons Dawson and Callan in January 2023 (Picture: REUTERS) Sullivan didn’t immediately decide on the defence’s request or how the case would proceed. A further hearing has been set for November 2 to discuss a possible date for a new trial. Away from the courtroom, the case has become the subject of an online guessing game. Self-styled internet sleuths have picked over livestreamed testimony, with some making baseless claims that Patrick killed the children and framed Clancy. Those accusations come despite surveillance footage and phone records supporting his account of being out of the house. He visited a CVS pharmacy before collecting a takeaway from a restaurant. Patrick addressed the ‘dangerous’ conspiracy theories during his only interview to date on CBS’ 60 Minutes. Patrick Clancy gave an interview on CBS following news the judge had declared a mistrial ‘It’s deeply harmful to the legacy of my children,’ he said, adding: ‘It is a huge distraction from what really matters here, which is perinatal mental health, and it’s done real harm to real people.’ Patrick also called the conspiracy theories ‘painful to see,’ and said they make it ‘difficult’ for him to be out in public. ‘And it’s possible that some of those people, after seeing lie after lie after lie, they start to believe it. And that’s what we’re left with.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Execution of first woman in Tennessee for 200 years halted at last moment
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page The execution of a Tennessee woman on death row since 1995 has been called off at the last moment. A federal appeals court put a stop to the execution of Christa Pike about an hour before it was set to begin Wednesday. The judges said they want to review whether her allegations of sexual abuse and rape as a child were fully considered before she was sentenced to death. Now 50, she was convicted of a 1995 murder she committed at age 18. This would have been the state’s first execution of a woman in at least 200 years. It wasn’t immediately clear if Tennessee’s attorney general was appealing the decision or how long the execution might be delayed. Death row inmate Christa Pike, held at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution (Picture: via REUTERS) Execution witnesses had already gathered at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville when the order came down at around 9am local time. **_This is a breaking news story… More to follow…_** Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Rogue landlord pair fined after 21 people crammed into house overrun by cockroaches
The property contained more than double the permitted number of occupants (Picture: SWNS) A pair of rogue landlords have been fined £100,000 after they allowed 21 people – including three children and a baby – to live in a house overrun by cockroaches. More than twice the permitted number of people were crammed into the property on Bassingham Road in Wembley, northwest London. Tenants raised concerns about property manager Meet Valand with Brent Council, prompting officers to investigate the house, where they found a swathe of serious issues. These included the cockroach infestation, a broken stove, missing doors and fire safety breaches. The case was taken to court, where it was found that the failings amounted to Category One harm – the highest level of housing hazard. Valand was convicted of seven offences and fined £40,000, plus a £2,000 victim surcharge and £3,183.85 in prosecution costs. Vispap Sarkari, who managed the property and rent collections, was also convicted. Tenants complained about the property to their local council (Picture: Brent Council/ SWNS) ## Ready to start your homebuying journey? Sarkari, who had previous housing offences, was fined £50,000, a further £2,000 victim surcharge and £3,183.85 in prosecution costs. Following his conviction for housing offences in March 2026 and these further findings, he is now eligible for a banning order. This prohibits a landlord or agent from letting or managing residential properties in the future. Councillor Robert Johnson said: ‘These convictions should serve as a warning to any landlord or property manager in Brent who chooses to ignore their responsibilities and put profit before people. ‘Residents deserve safe, secure housing and are encouraged to report poor conditions or unlawful practices so we can protect tenants and hold landlords to account. ‘Property licensing is a key tool in helping the council raise housing standards, improve living conditions and tackle rogue landlords.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Europe needs to ‘scale up defences’ ahead of ‘dark winter’ for Russian threats
Belgium’s defence minister warned of more hybrid threat actions from Russia (Picture: EPA) European countries have received a sobering warning ahead of a ‘dark winter’, as threats from Russia continue to mount. Belgian Defence minister Theo Francken said: ‘There will be more hybrid threat actions in the coming months. It will be a dark winter for Europe.’ Russia has already been ‘waging a campaign of war’ against the UK by launching hundreds of drones and covert UAVs across Britain and Europe from their shadow fleet in preparation for a future conflict, a report warned in July. Francken added: ‘We need to scale up our air defences and we need to have more stocks, scale up production. Everything has to go faster.’ The urgency of Francken’s message has caught the attention of other European nations. Chatham House Russia Expert Keir Giles told **Metro** : ‘Belgium, which is not known as a country that is overly alarmist about the Russian threat, may have identified specific problems that could be facing Europe in the near term.’ ## Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's **News Updates** newsletter or get **Breaking News** alerts the moment it happens. Other European nations have increased their air defences, like Poland (Picture: Shutterstock) He added: ‘There could be a specific warning of a Russian plan that is causing him to use this language. It is not unusual for intelligence warnings of what Russia is preparing to be released across Europe. ‘On the other hand, anybody who is looking at the pattern of escalation by Russia over the past few months, and how Moscow feels able to embark on ever more dangerous and provocative actions, will understand for themselves that unless that trend is interrupted or reversed, it is going to be a very dangerous time for Europe.’ Last week, United States intelligence warned of a planned Russian drone attack targeting France, Italy and Spain. El Mundo revealed that the US shared the Kremlin’s plans for a major escalation, which would see Russia use drones launched from shipping containers in the Mediterranean. Lithuanian authorities said the drones used would be Gerbera drones, which have a range of around 600km and can be launched easily. It’s believed that CIA head John Ratcliffe’s recent visit to Moscow for ‘undisclosed talks’ was to warn the Kremlin against the plan. The leaders of Spain, France and Italy were later tipped off about the potential drone attack, which would likely trigger a larger conflict. The latest warning about the European drone attack is consistent with previous warnings from Russia about what it would do if Western nations continued to support Ukraine. ******Get in touch with our news team by emailing us atwebnews@metro.co.uk.****** **For more stories like this,** check our news page. ‘I make art on wads of old chewing gum – it’s taken me all over the world’
You might not know Ben Wilson by name, but if you’ve ever been to London, you’ve almost certainly seen his art (Picture: Luc Gauci Green for Metro) You’ve probably seen his artwork on street corners, around bins, and even under your shoe. But you might not know that much about Ben Wilson, the artist better known as ‘Chewing Gum Man’. Wilson is famous for his miniature paintings, which he has created on wads of chewing gum discarded and flattened on pavements for the past 22 years. Speaking about his work, he said: ‘You’re taking something which is spat out and discarded and then transforming it into something positive. ‘In a consumerist society, chewing gum is something that can be created very fast, and it’s very cheap – it’s artificial in every sense.’ Wilson’s art has landed him in trouble with the law more than once. Wilson is best known for his chewing gum art (Picture: Luc Gauci Green for Metro) Metro attended Wilson’s recent open house in north London (Picture: Luc Gauci Green for Metro) He faced one court case claiming his paintings are on public property, which he managed to win on a ‘technicality’ because the gum is **_on_** public property, rather than **_being_** public property. He also had to fight to save hundreds of his pieces on the Millennium Bridge, which have been under threat of removal due to renovations. But he says it’s all worth it, as his unconventional art is a great way to connect him to the people around him. Wilson has created hundreds of dedications to the people who pass by as he works, to mark births, deaths, marriages or simply to honour a request for something as simple as a painting of cheese and crackers. Wilson says the artwork is about ‘acknowledging people’ (Picture: Luc Gauci Green for Metro) ## Latest London news * You can now snap up £12 train tickets from London to 'vibrant' UK city * Putney Pusher suspect found dead after being released under investigation * Buckingham Palace's hidden treasures uncovered by workmen _**To get the latest news from the capital, visit Metro's** London news hub._ Wilson keeps a daily ‘diary’ of paintings made on tiny tiles (Picture: Luc Gauci Green for Metro) ‘It’s nice to actually do a picture for a person in a truly giving way,’ he said, despite the financial challenges of creating free art in a consumerist world. ‘It’s about acknowledging people; when people are alienated and disconnected, that’s when you have problems. ‘But also it’s about freedom of expression, because often you find that everything’s very controlled, so it’s nice to do art in a more spontaneous way.’ His work has taken him everywhere, from the Arctic Circle to South Africa. In one of his most challenging tasks, he created a painting for a doctor living outside Gaza City of an olive tree growing around ruins and the word ‘steadfastness’. But it’s London – his home, and the place where most of his art is based – that he particularly loves. He says its residents display ‘diversity of action, diversity of thought and diversity of people’, something Wilson thinks is desperately needed today. Wilson also makes wooden sculptures, which were on display at his house (Picture: Luc Gauci Green for Metro) Wilson opened his north London home and studio to the public last weekend, displaying an eclectic mix of his renowned chewing gum art, wooden sculptures and his ‘diary’, made up of an ‘intuitive’ painting each day on tiny tiles. Selling art at the open house will give Wilson the means to carry on makingstreet art and making more connections with people, he told **Metro**. Even after completing hundreds of requests, he has countless notebooks filled with more that he has not been able to get around to. According to his girlfriend Freya Cummings, an artist in her own right, these unfinished requests ‘haunt him’. Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Pep Guardiola breaks silence after Man City found guilty of financial breaches
Pep Guardiola and Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak (Picture: Reuters) Pep Guardiola has backed Manchester City and their owners after the Premier League confirmed the club had been found guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of financial rules. Guardiola left the club last summer after a hugely successful ten-year tenure, which saw him win 20 trophies, including six league titles. But that trophy haul will now come under increased scrutiny after an independent commission found the club guilty of all charges related to ‘serious breaches’ of financial rules. Between the period of 2009 and 2018, during which Man City won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and three League Cups, the club ‘relied on sham agreements to artificially inflate the club’s revenues and reduce its costs’. The club also committed multiple breaches of its duties of co-operation and utmost good faith towards the League throughout the course of the lengthy investigation. Guardiola joined the club in 2016, with the first of his league titles coming in the final season covered by the charges. Despite leaving the dugout, the Spaniard stayed on as a technical advisor and global ambassador, and has now publically backed the club in his first statement since the guilty verdict was announced. Manchester City won six league titles under Guardiola (Picture: Reuters) Posting a picture alongside City CEO Ferran Soriano, Guardiola wrote: ‘I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever. ‘I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran, the players, staff, Enzo and you, our unique supporters. ‘Let me be clear: we will get through this together. ‘I love you all.’ **More to follow…** Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Mark Selby wants to avoid Neil Robertson fate as he approaches huge milestone
Mark Selby doesn’t fancy a low-key celebration of a huge landmark (Pictures: Getty/TNT Sports) Mark Selby is closing in on his 1,000th professional century, but does not want to get there in the same circumstances Neil Robertson did. Selby continued the brilliant form he has been showing this season in a 5-1 hammering of Jackson Page at the Shenzhen Open on Wednesday. The four-time world champion lost the first frame but then went on a scoring rampage, knocking in three centuries of 132, 135 and 138 along with a 77. Those three tons took his career tally to 980 as he gets ever closer to becoming the fifth player in history to reach 1,000 centuries. Ronnie O’Sullivan was the first to do so, followed by John Higgins, Judd Trump and Robertson, with the Australian hitting the milestone in underwhelming circumstances. The Thunder from Down Under made his 1,000th ton in an International Championship qualifier against Umut Dikme at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, which was played behind-closed-doors. ## Are you snooker loopy? The Rocket reached the landmark as he beat Robertson 10-4 to win the 2019 Players Championship, doing so in front of a jubilant crowd in Preston. > Delighted to win the Players Championship tonight in Preston and buzzing to have made my 1,000th century in the final frame 🏆 Thanks to all my fans for the support. Hard luck to my fellow Aussie @nr147 a class act and an even better human 🇦🇺 pic.twitter.com/wzxNoJ1rqO > > — Ronnie O'Sullivan (@ronnieo147) March 10, 2019 Remarkably, Higgins and Trump both reached 1,000 centuries in September 2024 and both did so in defeats to Mark Allen. The Wizard of Wishaw got to 1,000 in an English Open defeat to the Pistol and the Ace in a British Open loss to the same man. With another 20 needed to reach four figures, Selby will not get there in Shenzhen this week, but will do this season, with big events to come before the end of 2026 including the Northern Ireland Open, International Championship, Champion of Champions and UK Championship. The Jester from Leicester has been really impressive so far this season, winning the China Open in August and reaching the British Open final earlier this month. ‘It’s amazing what confidence does, just in general,’ he said. ‘I’m confident with my game at the moment, I know that I’m playing some good stuff. When I get my chances I’m confident that I’m going to take them and today was one of those days. Selby landed a fourth China Open title this season (Picture: Getty Images) ‘The standard of snooker nowadays, if you’re not scoring when you get a chance you can’t be winning tournaments and competing at the back end. I seem to be doing that at the moment and long may it continue.’ There have been some big shocks already at the Shenzhen Open, with the likes of Zhao Xintong, O’Sullivan, Higgins and Mark Williams all falling early. Selby continues to look very strong, though, and will take on Stephen Maguire in the last 16 on Thursday. Zhao’s early defeat to Scott Donaldson gives hope to the chasing pack in the race to dethrone him as world number one in the near future, with Selby, Trump, Robertson and world champion Wu Yize all in the hunt. Blackpool Pleasure Beach crowned best theme park in the world
The world’s best theme park is on our doorstep (Picture: Alamy Stock Photo) When you hear the phrase ‘world’s best theme park,’ you probably think of one of the many Disneyland locations, or perhaps Universal in Orlando. Both _are_ internationally famous, after all, and home to some of the most iconic theme park attractions, from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Pirates of the Caribbean-themed rides. However, while these parks might collectively welcome some 165 million tourists every year, their popularity doesn’t necessarily make them the best. In fact, this year, a theme park here in the UK has taken home that title. A round of applause for Blackpool Pleasure Beach — now known as Pleasure Beach Resort — which has been praised for its ‘sustained success and constant contributions to the theme park industry.’ The second-oldest amusement park in the country was crowned the winner at the Park World Excellence Awards 2026 — the first UK theme park to receive the accolade. The Isle of Wight’s Blackgang Chine claims the _oldest_ title, having first opened in 1843. > @lift.hill > > Finally got some new clips #rollercoaster #viral #xyzcba #blackpoolpleasurebeach #themeparks > > ♬ Ain’t In LA – ADÉLA The prestigious awards celebrate operators, suppliers, manufacturers, and entertainment specialists in the attractions and theme park industry, and regularly receive over 200 entries from around the world. But the Lancashire-based theme park didn’t just win ‘best of the best’ either. It also took home the ‘best ride of the year’ award, for Aviktas. Aviktas officially opened in May after a £8.7 million investment. It’s the UK’s tallest Gyro Swing ride that sends 40 riders 138 feet in the air at 120 degrees, and dangles their legs over the Blackpool skyline. Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach Resort has been providing family fun for over a century (Picture: Getty Images) Following both wins, Amanda Thompson OBE, CEO of Pleasure Beach Resort, said: ‘To be named Best of the Best is a massive achievement for our park.’ Thompson added that the industry is ‘full of so much talent,’ so ‘to be recognised among the best speaks volumes on the dedication and hard work that has kept us moving forward for 130 years.’ She also commented on the opening of Aviktas, calling it a ‘hugely valuable addition’ to Pleasure Beach. ‘If they haven’t already, I’d absolutely encourage people to visit Pleasure Beach and give our ride, now recognised as one of the world’s best, a go!’ ## Blackpool and its Pleasure Beach, at a glance Pleasure Beach Resort first opened its doors way back in August 1896. Founded by Alderman William George Bean and his business partner John Outhwaite, the pair wanted to create an American-style amusement park ‘where adults could feel like children again.’ > https://www.instagram.com/p/DdoN65NjtoX/?hl=en&img_index=1 At the time, Blackpool was one of the most popular and famous Victorian holiday resorts in Britain thanks to the arrival of the railway in 1846. From there, plenty of Victorian landmarks began to crop up, including the North Pier (1863), Central Pier (1868), and South Pier (1893), and Blackpool Tower (1894). In 1879, it introduced the iconic Illuminations to extend the tourist season. The Pleasure Beach was simply an extension of Blackpool’s popularity. However, in the 1960s and 70s, when Mediterranean package holidays burst onto the scene, Blackpool was one of many British seaside towns that went into decline. Which is why the Pleasure Beach Resort receiving this title is a huge win for the town. Blackpool was once a thriving Victorian seaside town (Picture: Getty Images) As for what’s there today, the theme park features around 30 attractions, combining historic rides with more recent additions. There’s the UK’s only Nickelodeon Land, which features SpongeBob SquarePants and PAW Patrol-themed rides, and of course, The Big One. The latter was once the UK’s tallest roller coaster (Thorpe Park’s Hyperia now boasts this title), but many will remember it as the ‘Pepsi Max.’ Standard online tickets for Pleasure Beach Resort start from £30. The theme park is open until late November. ## What was last year’s world’s best theme park? Before Blackpool Pleasure Beach won this year’s ‘world’s best theme park’ award, Germany’s Europa-Park held the crown. Located in Rust, Baden-Württemberg, in the southwest of the country, it’s Germany’s largest theme park. The park features 20 themed areas, around 100 attractions, and 14 rollercoasters. Europa-Park is also one of the very few theme parks to remain open over the winter months. Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Shoppers flee as ‘gunman fires at machete-wielding rival’ in London’s ‘Wild West’
An area of north London was cordoned off following the incident (Picture: Supplied to Metro) Shoppers ran for their lives after a gunman reportedly fired two shots at a rival brandishing a machete in a corner of north London branded the ‘Wild West’. The shooter narrowly missed bystanders as he fired at a knifeman on a busy stretch of Green Lanes on Tuesday morning. Shoppers and families dived for cover, with one bullet narrowly missing four people in a passing car. Witnesses described how a man, allegedly carrying a machete, taunted his adversary, who then drew a pistol and fired at him. One bullet hit a door, leaving a deep dent, while the other is believed to have smacked into a car with four people inside, narrowly missing the occupants. Micah Richards claims England star has gone ‘to the next level’ after Czechia win
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards (Picture: The Rest Is Football) Micah Richards believes Harry Kane has gone ‘to the next level’ with his finishing after his latest England goal in their 2-0 win over Czechia. Anthony Gordon opened the scoring in Prague before Kane’s ruthless finish put the game beyond doubt to register England’s first win of their Nations League campaign. Kane has enjoyed a remarkable 12 months of goalscoring for both Bayern Munich and England and is the bookies’ favourite to win next month’s Ballon d’Or in London. And Richards was keen to laud the 33-year-old’s talents, insisting the Three Lions skipper has managed to take his game to yet another level over recent months. ‘I had this debate a while ago, and I think the debate was something like Rooney, Kane and Shearer, or something like that,’ he said on The Rest Is Football podcast. ‘And I picked Shearer, I did, because when I was growing up, the goals that you scored and headers and all that, it was amazing. ‘But now, I genuinely think Kane’s taken it to the next level. I think for someone not to be particularly strong, someone not to be particularly fast, obviously his brain’s on a different level. Harry Kane now has 87 goals for England (Picture: Getty Images) ‘He uses his body well, but I wouldn’t say, you wouldn’t say Kane is a strong player. You wouldn’t say, oh, that is his attribute, but he uses his body well. I’ll take that. ‘But his finishing, right foot, left foot, it’s not normal. The purity of the strike, it’s not normal. Right foot, left foot, dropping into little pockets and all that sort of stuff. ‘I know he was different players, both top goal scorers. But when he’s in the box, I never think he’s going to miss. He always seems to hit the target. > KANE DOUBLES ENGLAND'S LEAD 🔥 > > Harry Kane in the right place at the right time for the Three Lions 🦁#ITVFootball | @England pic.twitter.com/Od9x5kXOsH > > — ITV Football (@itvfootball) September 29, 2026 ‘Yes, he missed the penalty against Spain.
