Beautifully done, although could have been a bit more specific in terms of overturning specific sources of corruption (e.g. overturning Citizens United, lack of campaign contribution caps).

There are no UN-Security Council mandated sanctions on Russia; all sanctions against them are imposed unilaterally, by country (or collectively by the EU). Not sure the ROK has the legislative capacity to impose unilateral sanctions, or decided to use it against Russia.

The thing that has me puzzled is this: how is this supposed Russian diesel supposed to get to the US? On boats, via the Black Sea? 👀😆🚀 (Also, I just read Russia is importing diesel from South Korea due to lack of production…) I smell Belarusian potash.

Notable that the joint statement, while offering rhetoric support, is completely silent on any measures to help the #ICC. Hopefully that is coming. These states are not powerless. The EU, UK and Canada all have the ability to invoke measures to block the impact of U.S. sanctions.

PS: A quick Google search suggests the US uses 4-5m barrels of diesel PER DAY. 300k tonnes is roughly half that. So Trump is revoking sanctions (and creating a logistical nightmare) for ca 12 hours worth of diesel supply. Those prices are sure going to nosedive!

"This is a very big and important announcement." From a very big and important boi! But does Russia, which can't even provide fuel for its own people, even have any to offer? How will it get to the US and in what "short period of time"? I smell Belarussian potash...

Why am I so certain no charges will lie against US (or allied) soldiers? The ICC only deals with *those most responsible* for the *most serious crimes*. Were Venezuela still a member, they *could* theoretically go after Hegseth or Trump (e.g. re boat shootings) but jurisdictional hurdles are steep.

What a complete joke this administration is - albeit a deeply unfunny one. No "attempts to charge American service members" have ever been made. All the court has done is establish *jurisdiction* over criminal acts committed in Afghanistan (which *could* include crimes by US & allied forces).

Today, the world divides into those who support international law and those who do not. A Nobel Peace Price for Navi Pillay on one hand - on the other, a brazen MOVE to undermine the institution established to end impunity for atrocity crimes. We need more than talk from Canada and its allies.

Having researched it a bit (which I obviously should have done earlier... 😐), it would appear that the quote conflates some of her ideas, but cannot be attributed to her directly. I do, however, wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment expressed so I'll leave it up.

That’s entirely fair - although many of the policies espoused by AOC et al are things we in Canada take for granted, hence my thought. But you’re correct in that they do go further in some aspects, which should help moving that window towards where we are already.

Socialism is a scare word they have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years. Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security. ... Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people. ... Harry S Truman

I guess that makes the "centre" in the US way right from where it is up here, given some of the Dem's policy positions & corporate obeisance. May the "fringe" move the Overton window to where Americans can aspire to things we take for granted, like, e.g., universal health care & parental leave.

Honest question: So would you consider the Democratic party to be centre left, then? To us Canadians, Dems are like our old "Progressive Conservatives", with a number of folks (AOC, Sanders) who look like our - pretty centrist - Liberals. I guess it depends on how one defines "centre"?

It is becoming increasingly clear to me that my own approach to being an ambassador was pitifully un-lucrative. Just think: I actually focused on doing the job, providing value to taxpayers, and being a responsible steward for their funds - when I could have had lobbyists send me cash. Bother.

Zero logic. Gas prices are NOT about Trump and whether he "looks like he'w winning" - they're about the actual situation around Hormuz. Any return to bombing (limited or not) will exacerbate the risk factors around the strait = higher prices. You are governed by a confederacy of dunces.

This gives me chills. Why? 1. COVID modeled pandemic impacts for lovers of bioweapons; 2. Russia has had active bio-weapons programs for decades; 3. Russia routinely flouts WMD non-proliferation rules with new programs (see Novichok nerve agent); 3. Russia loves hybrid warfare & disruption.

Breaking the election observations mandated in the Copenhagen Commitments of the OSCE, a key element of democratization efforts that started with the Cold War Helsinki Accords, is par for the course of the Trump Administration’s efforts to become more like Russia every day. Shame.

Apologies that sounded brusque - I assume you meant the advisory opinion on Palestine? Under the ICJ statute only contentious cases create obligations, and only between the parties. Political inertia is a whole other matter and needs to be cracked through pressure. But legally - no obligation.

The issue of sovereignty assertion has nothing to do with Canada being in breach of its obligations. Opening/closing air space a political choice, which you can assert or not - and be rightly attacked for by NGOs on political grounds. But it’s not a legal issue until a request is made.

Sabine Nolke 🇨🇦🇺🇦🏳️‍⚧️🌈 @snolke.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
And then, before being accused of refusal/breach, states had to be given an opportunity to consult on their reasons for refusal. So with all due respect, accusations of “breach” are hugely premature. 2/2

That last is a fair point. I just have a problem with people asserting we’re “in breach” when that’s far from clear. I chaired a WG on state cooperation at the ICC after the South Africa debacle. It was pretty much agreed that to be in breach, you had to refuse a request for cooperation. 1/2

Are you sure of that? Has an Art 93 request for surrender been made to Canada by the Court? Note these are made to states ON THE TERRITORY OF WHICH an accused is found. Also note that permissions for transit of accused through a state are not required if the plane does not land there (Art 89(3)(d)).

I find it vaguely amusing that pretty much all those right-wing grifters now touting Alberta separatism are linked to the deeply unpleasant lot that came to Ottawa just a few years ago, on big, honking trucks festooned in Canadian flags, claiming to represent “the true Canada”.
