It’s officially book day! Dear Blind Lady is OUT! 291 pages of as many questions as I could answer. I’m grateful to all my contributors, but most especially Alice Wong who wrote the section on how to work with PCA’s. Buy the book, come to an event, fight ableism.

Yeah - she figured out how to open the baby gate 3 different ways and it is… an adventure keeping her alive

That one at least is on audiobook. New one we still gotta find a home for audio rights.

As I think you know that’s basically the thesis of being seen, yep!

160

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

I deliberately chose not to revisit that movie with my kids.

010

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

Oh this was bad. I also got terrified by The Blustery Day when piglet blows away.

120

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

Watcher in the Woods. I STILL have not finished that movie. JFC.

050

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

And usually it starts with “but you’re not LIKE Helen Keller so how can you be Deafblind!!??”

160

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

Also where’s my fucking robot car. Like we could just solve the trope. Give me a fully automatic Tesla (ew, Elon, but also). I’ll even shut up about the trope forever!

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

What’s also interesting about it is that she didn’t fully use it to communicate. She also used sign. And braille. And a lot of what she was doing was LEARNING from mouth shapes. Sorry I go on Helen Keller rants.

Ok so here’s one NON DBL post for the day: My child is 16 months on Tuesday. And I’m not sure where she got epic comedic timing but today I said to my husband “while you were gone it was a lot.” And the little velociraptor cackled. And then says “yessss”

I hate the “blind person drives for comedy” trope more but not by much

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

You’re welcome! Not every event works for every person.

020

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

I think it’s somewhat HK but also somewhat honestly media building on media.

It’s true! ❤️ and my cute dress came!

I know I’m not the only one who is afraid of having events where no one shows up. Book Tour is always unnerving.

CN: ableist slur in quoted post's quoted post As a Disabled person, so fucking tired of this conspiracy theory and having to deal with Helen Keller's Complicated Legacy on repeat. At least it lets me bring back @snarkbat.bsky.social's 2022 RadioLab episode.

The Helen Keller Exorcism - Transcript

Elsa Sjunneson, a fantasy writer and Deafblind woman, was haunted by Hellen Keller. Then, a TikTok conspiracy brought her closer to the disability icon than she ever dreamt.

I think some of it is a genuine reaction to things not being exactly how they assumed, and most people don’t have a curiosity reaction there.

020

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

Literally they’re mad at me that Deafblindness is on a spectrum and maybe they weren’t right about everything

040

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

I shifted to uppercase a couple years ago because of the work I’m doing in the DHH community but it’s v liminal

Like the level of rage at the idea that I can reliably use the internet is really disproportionate.

2230

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

Usually it goes something like: Them: ur blind n deaf and how are u reading this? Liaaaar Me: lol I have glasses, blindness is a spectrum, and also voice to text exists Them: F U LADY Me: why tho

2190

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

Jay, I have so many questions and I want literally NONE of the answers

0170

Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat @snarkbat.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

Ok my favorite Wrong On the Internet moment is when people act utterly shocked that I, a Deafblind person, am using the internet. And then they get FURIOUS WITH ME for telling them I can be both Deafblind and post on social media. 🤣 It’s apparently NOT ALLOWED.
